Do I remember something being mentioned about an injury he had coming in to the tournament?
Dinky Jo - August 30, 2007 03:34 PM (GMT)
or maybe not, this is an excerpt from his interview on Monday:
Q. Are you happy with the way you're playing?
RICHARD GASQUET: Yeah, I feel good. It's a Grand Slam. It's always different for me. I like to play this tournament, like all the Grand Slam. I like. So that's okay for me. I have no blisters now. I feel physically great. I am in a great shape to play my second round.
Tenez - August 30, 2007 03:40 PM (GMT)
Yes I read that. Hopefully nothing too serious.
Scotsguy - August 30, 2007 03:41 PM (GMT)
NOOOOOO, thats means that Donald Young has a passage to the third round
That is terrivble news, I hate that damn preppy young american with his rediculous diamond earings......I REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY don't want him to become the next big name in tennis and will be quite content if he goes back to being double bagelled....
oh yeah, unfortunate for Gasquet to lose out :( but these things happen. However Richard has been unlucky with injuries a lot.
Dinky Jo - August 30, 2007 03:45 PM (GMT)
Yes, I'm not a big fan of Donald Young either. He gave some hideously egotistical interview after he'd got double bagelled and Roddick or someone had given him some advice........
Mind you, i read his interview from Monday and it didn't seem too bad.......

So is Gasquet definitely out? I was looking forward to that match-up. I thought it would be a good one.
Mo aka Mz O'Hara - August 30, 2007 03:46 PM (GMT)
Nooooooo I was so looking forward to seeing him play since Wimbledon. Absolutely gutted :( :( :( :( *goes to see if I can find out what the problem is*
Nick Havoc - August 30, 2007 03:49 PM (GMT)
Just saw an article that said it was illness, rather than injury, citing fever and sore throat. Of course, that same article had a subtitle that said Donald Young would be facing Lopez in the next round, so apparently the Lopez/Andreev match is already decided.

If Lopez wins now, maybe there should be another inquiry ...
Pity about Gasquet. It could have been a good challenge for Roger.

I am a bit gutted. I was looking forward to this match and also a confrontation with Fed possibly.
But it look like his career is going to be plagued with misfortunes.

Gasquet Withdraws; Donald Young Advances to 3rd Round
Thursday, August 30, 2007
By Neil Schlecht
Richard Gasquet, the No. 13 seed and this year’s Wimbledon semifinalist, withdrew unexpectedly this morning before a highly anticipated 2nd-round match with the American upstart Donald Young.
Gasquet attributed his woes to a viral infection, which left him with a fever and sore throat. “I am really, really disappointed because it's an important tournament for me,” said Gasquet. “I practice this morning, but nothing is possible for me.”
Gasquet chose not to play rather than take the court and perhaps have to retire. “With my illness, I'm sure I can't win this match,” he said.
Young, who in the first round captured his first victory in a Grand Slam, said, “I’d prefer to win it, but I’ll take this also.” The American moves on to face either the Russian Igor Andreev, who defeated Andy Roddick at the French Open this year, or Feliciano Lopez, who upset fellow Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero in the first round.
The encounter, to be have been played second on Armstrong Stadium, figured to be an intriguing matchup of talented shotmakers. Gasquet, long touted as the phenom of French tennis, has had an inconsistent rise to the top. His commitment to the game and mental fortitude have not always been the equal of his talent.
Young, were he to survive the 3rd round, could face either No. 1 Roger Federer or the rising American John Isner, who like Young is enjoying a breakthrough on the ATP tour.

:) Yep...but surprisingly, the young americans have had a good run this year..both men and women....
Oui, c'est dommage.... but C'est la vie as well :) , you get the feeling Richard Gasquet is lurking on the cusp of greatness... but somehow just not reaching there yet...
