Title: US Open 29 August: Day 3
Description: Will Henman play his last GS match??
Scotsguy - August 29, 2007 10:58 AM (GMT)
Matt Cronin's prediction-read the last line, Andy will not be pleased roflmao
27-DMITRY TURSUNOV V. TIM HENMAN
Thus ends the Grand Slam career of England's finest post-War player, who will wave goodbye after this contest, unless he pulls off a minor miracle and upends Tursunov. That's not going to happen, as Henman has been contending with a back injury that won't go away and has only won three matches this year. It will be sad to see the soon-to-be 33-year-old go, as his classic serve-and-volley style was always a pleasure to watch, and when he was in a good physical space, was a second-week threat at the Slams, reaching six semifinals, including a run at the US Open in 2004, where he lost to Roger Federer.
Henman will attempt to put a stern fight in this match, but Tursunov has too much game for him. The Russian has had his way with him before and will torture him off the ground with hard, consistent, deep groundstrokes. This hasn't been Tursunov's best year either as he's been troubled by a wrist injury, but the man who calls the greater Sacramento area home did win Indianapolis earlier this summer and has the potential to be a real force here. Grant Tiger Tim a set based on some early clawing, but he'll be gone in four sets. Now it's really Andy Murray's turn to step up for Mother England.

Safin vs Dancevic has to be the tie of the day. The Canadian has been in fantastic form over the summer, reaching the final of one ATP tournament, where he beat Roddick in the semi-finals before losing to Tursunov. He also reached the quarter finals on home soil in Montreal, eventually losing to Nadal after impresisvely taking the opening set.
Safin, on the other hand has done f*ck all, except the odd entertaining rant about how he doesn't care about anything.
I see this as almost 50/50, but I think Safin will raise his level for what is probably his favourite Slam and edging it in 4. 3-3 at the moment in the first set.

Well he's f*cking Dancevic so far, having just taken the first set 7-5.
Devilder is also getting f*cked pretty hard, and is yet to win a game against Youzhny. :yikes: The Russian leads 6-0, 4-0.
That's enough f*cking I think, before I join you in pre-mod... Korolev just serving for the first set against Wawrinka, Kohlschreiber is a set and a break up on Zabaleta and Berrer took the first set off... erm... some Polish guy.

Ginepri is destroying Rochus.....i really don't think i predicted that
Wise_Analyst - August 29, 2007 05:38 PM (GMT)
Before his excellent run over the summer, Dancevic was always seen as a talented player, but a bit of a choker. However, in many of his American hard court victories, he was closing out sets and matches with good serving, and it looked like he had turned a corner.
Sadly today his nerves got the better of him badly. He served for both the second and the third set but was broken and eventually lost both tiebreaks, although admittedly after fighting bravely in both. A missed opportunity for him against a solid but unspectaclar Safin.
Scotsguy - August 29, 2007 05:39 PM (GMT)
Safin closes the match with an ace down the T.
7-5 7-6(5) 7-6(7)
It was an entertaining match but Dancevic just wasn't strong enough on the big points....
Wise_Analyst - August 29, 2007 06:58 PM (GMT)
Korolev and Wawrinka into a deciding set. They're currently at 5-5 so it's right down to the wire - Wawrinka's pretty weak under pressure though so I'd make the Russian favourite.
Robredo got the first two sets against Reynolds 6-3, 7-6.
Garcia-Lopez took the first set off Kunitsyn 6-4.
Moya stormed to the first set 6-1 over Phau.
Nadal has just started against the Australian wild card Alun Jones and it's on serve at 2-1.

Not being pedantic (well actually i am but...) but Korolev is Russian.
Wawrinka is serving for the match but is 0-30 down
Come on Korolev

Wawrinka wins in 5
Rafa is 4-1 down, he better win this set or it buggers up my predictions....
Dinky Jo - August 29, 2007 07:10 PM (GMT)

Normality is restored in the Nadal match, back on serve.
Nick Havoc - August 29, 2007 07:57 PM (GMT)
Had anyone heard of this Jones fellow who seems to be giving Nadal quite a fight? He's not exactly a youngster, but I don't recall hearing about him before.
Nadal won a tight first set, but currently trails in the second:
7-5 1-4
Dinky Jo - August 29, 2007 07:58 PM (GMT)
i dunno - all i know is he's an Aussie wild card
Wise_Analyst - August 29, 2007 08:13 PM (GMT)
The USTA have an agreement with Tennis Australia where they each grant the other country one wildcard into their home Slam - Jones was the recipient of said wildcard, I believe. Don't know anything about him other than that though.
He's 5-3 up in the second set... this can't be promising news for Rafa.
Kunitsyn 2-1 up in sets over Garcia Lopez.
drakey01 - August 29, 2007 08:16 PM (GMT)
Jones takes the second set, good match for him so far.
Dinky Jo - August 29, 2007 08:26 PM (GMT)
what's going on with Nadal? on paper this was a nice easy first round match for him
petalp - August 29, 2007 08:34 PM (GMT)
Evening all :)
Kind of trying to write a report, and keep half an eye on the Henman v Tursunov & Nadal v jones matches.. Obviously being a guy, multi tasking in an alien concept!
Tim seems to be battling well against Dmitry, which is very encouraging.
Rafa seems to be struggling. It looked to me as if he pretty much pickpocketed the first set from Jones, who really should have taken it. He could therefore have been 2-0 up.
Also Rafa is being broken as often as he is breaking Jones. It doesn't look like a particularly authoritative start for the youg Spaniard, but of course he had an inauspicious start against Kendrick early on in SW19 last year, and he didn't do too badly then.. so early days..
