Title: Here's some gossip for you all...
SerenaW19 - August 22, 2007 04:58 PM (GMT)
Grand Slam draws are fixed to stop Serena dominating again.
The only three players who have ever had both the mental capacity and the game to unsettle Serena on a consistent basis are Jennifer Capriati, Venus Williams and Justine Henin. Now she has drawn one of them in the QF or earlier in 7/12 Grand Slams since Wimbledon 2003. :ban:
Gav - August 22, 2007 05:20 PM (GMT)
I clicked on this expecting to see some gossip!
All I see is paranoia!
She has a bad run of draws, of that there is no doubt. It's a shame she has not been able to play more tournaments to get up with Justine at the top of the rankings and then this would not happen.....then again I thought it was "just a matter of time" before she was back at the top :-
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tennis/6236551.stm :P :P
Sorry, I just had to rib you on that...
In all truth, I would back to her to beat Justine at the US should they both make it to the Quarters....
SerenaW19 - August 22, 2007 06:00 PM (GMT)
Paranoia is a synonym for incontrovertible fact, right? ;)
And in fairness Sereney did say it was "only a matter of time", she didn't specify how long, however she probably would've been better off saying "at some point maybe" roflmao
Gav - August 22, 2007 06:07 PM (GMT)
I would imagine if she does win the US Open she will probably break into the top 3 or 4 wouldn't she? In that case then this won't happen at the GS Events next year. It's a shame these matches are earlier in the tournament then they should be, it really is.
SerenaW19 - August 22, 2007 06:10 PM (GMT)
Top 5 I think maybe top 4, so yeah. She just needs to not get injured again...and actually play tennis!

Once again a Williams fan thinks the whole tennis world revolves around the Williams  Just joking :)
It obviously doesn't ..... it revolves around Sharapova because this USO draw takes her easily to the final

Don't buy into this lucky draw, easy draw, business.
Surely if a player deserves to win a tournament, they should (in theory) be able to beat anyone else in it, therefore being the best player at that tournament?

I see it both ways - yes whoever wins it has to win 7 matches so they deserve it no matter what but some draws can look easier than others.
To win the tournament Justine may have to beat Serena, Venus & Sharapova while Sharapova may have to beat Chakvetadze, Kuznetsova & Justine.
Which looks the harder path on paper?
When we get to the tournament things may work out differently - after all we all expected Bartoli to give Justine no problems at Wimbledon - but looking at the draw I think it's valid to say one players draw looks easier than others.

Actually I wouldn't dismiss the importance of a draw so easily. It may not be a major factor in determining who wins a Grand Slam. But neither should it be totally disregarded.
For example this year at Wimbledon, Justine had an emotional three setter with Serena, and by the third set against Bartoli she had virtually nothing left in the tank. That wouldn't have happened if she hadn't faced Serena in the quarters.
It's not about who you face, it's when you face them.
Similarly, FO 2004, Capriati beat Serena at a slam for the first time in three years and it took so much out of her she didn't turn up against Myskina in the semi.
It may not alwaysbe the case, but bad draws CAN have an effect. It's far from as simple as: best player wins regardless.

Steffi Graf didn't seem to be affected by any draws when she was still playing. The way she used to win BOTH the FO and Wimby was amazing and testament to her great fitness and mental strength.
