Past or present :D

Scotsguy - August 21, 2007 02:13 PM (GMT)
1.Murray-Such an interesti ng game, a fellow scot and has a very dry wit which a lot of people don't get....

2.Roddick-Such a great attitude and an infectious personality on court, his serve is an incredible shot and his determination is excellent.

3.Borg-GOAT in my opinion (at least until Fed retires) such an enigma and way ahead of his time in terms of style and ability.

4.Ferrero-Had such a hard time on the tour and really deserves to be back in the top 10, if he could get back to his 2003 tennis he would be a slam challenger.

5.Del Potro-A future star and has such control over his groundies and yet is able to hit them with such power, will win GSs.

dl04 - August 21, 2007 02:22 PM (GMT)
1. Marat Safin. So explosive on court and enigmatic as hell. Wonderfully understated off-court too, which only adds to his appeal. How will tennis cope when he's gone?

2. Rafael nadal. Just an exceptional athlete. His attitude and will to win is second to none and he's so humble that just makes him so likeable. Without him, Fed would be dominating everywhere.

3. Djokovic. Wicked sense of humour and just is so talented. What he has achieved so far is just remarkable.

4. Pat Rafter. The nicest guy in tennis- EVER. Also had Laver-esque genius at the net and was just an exceptional good sport.

5. Carlos moya. not many people would have the guts to come back from so many injuries, but Carlos has. Is playing as well now as ever.

My favourites are as follows.

1. Boris Becker
2. John McEnroe
3. Ivan Lendl
4. Bjorn Borg
5. Pete Sampras/Roger Federer

DL, do you really think tennis will be lost without Marat Safin? I might have agreed a few years ago, but he doesn't seem to bring much to the game anymore. Maybe it's just my point of view though.

SuperBRAT - August 21, 2007 03:12 PM (GMT)

Ouahh....you don't like losers Gav, do you? About 60 slams between themselves.

At the same time you sorted them in decreasing order. The less slam, the more you a fan, right?

Tennisveritas - August 21, 2007 03:19 PM (GMT)
1. First him: Maestro FED..This man is my favourite player by far because:

a) Talented at will (but there are a lot of talented players around) and able to use it (Gasquet the typical example of a guy with tons of talent but unable to be consistent). :P

B) The impact he is having on Tennis in general. IMO: the man finally convince everyone that the power is not the solution to everything, that dancing on a court and at the same time being deadly with your shots is possible.. ;)

2. Edberg..For plenty of reasons..great man great movement..Volleys from everywhere..And such a quite and humble guy..

3. Borg..Yes a great man who was a great "companion" of my first matches of Tennis...A real asset..Goat/ not sure but definitely the most talented and innovative player of his generation.

4. Safin: I like him , when he was at the top he was so powerful but also with great ideas and touch IMO...

5. At the moment Djoko ..But in this last positions there will be plenty of players I was simply supporting like: John McEnroe, Boris Becker and at least a couple of others..as Ivan Lendl..

:D Ha! You're right... I didn't notice the order had come out like that. So subconcsiously I like the winners in a loser kind of way...

1. Henman-purley for patriotism and entertainment value

2. Agassi-great player, personality and showmanship

3. Nadal-am one of the few who like his bum picking ritual

4. Lendl-Got me interested in tennis when i was a youngster

5. Guga-loved the way he could create a football match atmosphere

Pebs - August 21, 2007 05:00 PM (GMT)
 much harder to answer than who you dislike - cos so many you want to mention... I am sure my top five changes on a weekly basis but number one remains the same :P

1. Henman - always loved his game, loved his style, loved his humour and that fantastic fist pump ;)

2. Safin - explosive character, always interesting to watch, even when his game seems to desert him

3. Federer - the guy is a genius and who doesnt love to watch a genius at work?

4. Lendl - not so much his game but his drive, his sheer dogged determination - I always wanted him to win Wimbledon!

5. toss up for me between Johnny Mac - another explosive character and my absolute fav to listen too commentating... but also Blake for all he has been through....

Wise_Analyst - August 21, 2007 05:06 PM (GMT)
Sampras - explosive S&V game, pressure meant nothing to him. GOAT.

Edberg - actually supported him over Sampras in the '92 US Open final, but grew to prefer Sampras's style over time. Still loved watching this guy play.

McEnroe - annoyed me at first with his moaning, but no denying his talent. Has moved up in my estimations on almost a yearly basis.

Henman - not the best player ever, but I got gripped by the fever that surrounded his Wimbledon matches when I first moved to this country. Has probably given me more exciting matches than anyone else, and at his best, he was beaitiful to watch.

Gasquet - most talented current player by a mile; will move up the list if he ever gets his act together.

Plenty more, but think these guys stick more than anyone else. Special mention for Kuerten - my favourite clay court player of all time.

BIG-TODGER - August 21, 2007 06:43 PM (GMT)
1 Agassi great personality, great player, great fighter -what else do you want?

2 Federer Most talented player i've ever seen play!

3 Rafter made serve and volley sexy, great all round game, superb athlete and nice guy too.

4 Kuerten Best one handed backhand ever, style on a stick.

5 McEnroe total brat with the game of an angel-i could have gone for Borg, but this time pyro beats the iceman.

Agassi is a great guy, I must say I enjoyed him playing Rafter in the semis of Wimby in I think 2001, that was some match although obviously I supported Pat. :)

yeah the Agassi Rafter matches at Wimbledon were superb, i usually wanted agassi but didn't want rafter to lose, it was a bit odd really.

Tenez - August 21, 2007 10:51 PM (GMT)
To me Edberg was the best SVer ever. A better volleyer than rafter and should have won the French SVing!!!! Sampras and Rafter never got that close.

Also, Agassi, I like the guy and his game very much but I think we tend to give him a bit too much credit for his fighting ability. Yes he was very much the boss against most of the players but had a panicked look on his face when facing others and with his talent should probably have won more slams (versus Courier, Gomez, Becker, Sampras etc...).

trisco - August 21, 2007 11:06 PM (GMT)
Personal Faves only...

1. Thomas Muster - Kick ass work ethic and one of the best clay courters of recent times and came back from being hit by a car before the first major final of his career.
2. Boris Becker - Great fiery personality and IMO a great technical volleyer
3. Pete Sampras - What more needs to be said about this guy?
4. Roger Federer - Again, what more needs to be said? He's got years left too hopefully.
5. Novak Djokovic - Again, personality, nothing amazing stand out with his game to be, just does everything extremely well.

trisco - August 21, 2007 11:07 PM (GMT)
Actually, going on personal faves, I'd have to put Djokovic above Sampras and Federer so Nole is third.

I think you're right about Edberg-but liking a player is often more than merely admiration for their skills-it's an admiration of their entity on court.
Rafter's game was very physical and the way he moved and acted on court was very attractive-i don't mean sexually, but aesthetically-kind of robust-manly, physical-there's a sense of Rafter having to work hard for every point.
Edberg had a kind of clinical brilliance at the net, and i am a big fan of his, but it had a slightly anodyne feel to his game, a sense of unruffled perfection.
Preference is subjective of course, so i guess you pays your money and takes your choice.
