dl04 - August 21, 2007 01:56 PM (GMT)
Just thought i'd balance it out. You can choose players past and present :D
Scotsguy - August 21, 2007 02:08 PM (GMT)
1.Sharapova-So determined and so focused, has an excellent backhand and can play a very good all court game when she's at her best. Achieved so much for age as well.
2.Clijsters-Such a nice girl and never really achieved enough accoriing to her talent which should have been about 4 Grand Slams. and her splits were soooo cool.
3.Graf-GOAT for the women, such an incredible forehand and coverage, good serve, good volleys and the development of her Bh throughout her career was pretty special.
4.Anna Chakvetadze-A rising star, yet to lose a final and such an explosive personailty, very nice game to watch and will win Grand Slams.
5.Chris Evert-Often underrated but achieved a hell of a lot and IMHO a better singles player than Navratilova.
vivahate - August 21, 2007 02:09 PM (GMT)
navratilova
seles

My list:
1. Venus Williams. One of the best athlete to play the game. Wonderful first serve added with just ferocious power. Just a magnificent sight to behold in full flight
2. Lindsay Davenport. Has any ever struck such a clean ball? I doubt it. Wonderful groundstrokes, underated volley technique and an entertaining on-court temper
3. Serena Williams. The most intense competitor i've ever seen. Has the most mental fortitude i've seen in tennis for a long time. Such an explosive game, tremendous athlete and the best serve the WTA has ever seen
4. Mary pierce. Uber-Diva and a wonderful human being. Great character on court and blistering all-court game. Her 2005 revival was such a treat :D
5. Conchita Martinez. Strage choice i know, but such a talented individual. Some called her boring, but i thought she was enthralling to watch. She'll probably be the only Spanish winner at Wimby as well. Had a great career :D

You right she was talented but the most talented of them all was Mandlikova.
Pure Genius only matched by McEnroe.
liam_valid - August 21, 2007 03:48 PM (GMT)
1. Sanchez Vicario-wonderful fighting spirit and tremendous attitude towards the game
2. Pierce- Fearless, beautiful, dramatic, gives everything despite numerous problems in the past
3. Seles-The ultimate fighter
4. Davenport- The most beautiful and effortless shot maker
5. Serena/Venus
Wise_Analyst - August 21, 2007 05:32 PM (GMT)
Ivanovic - great looks, great personality, great game. I'm in love.
Evert - she was the beauty to Navratilova's beast. Brilliant player too.
Pennetta - I hear she's recently split up from Moya. If Ana keeps on ignoring my calls, Flavia could well be in there. :ok:
Myskina - really talented player and something unique, unorthodox about her looks which appeals to me.
Kournikova - ahem.
(Yes, I know, this might as well have just been a 'Which tennis players do you fancy' thread...)
Russiafan - August 21, 2007 05:52 PM (GMT)
1. Elena Dementieva - amazing fighting spirit, great ground strokes and superlative sideways movement.
2. Amanda Coetzer - she was only 5ft 2 in but she had talent and a good work ethic. She was my favourite player until her retirement in May 2004 when Elena took over the mantle.
3. Kimiko Date - I remember her run to the semis of wimbledon in 1996 and it was at that point that I took an active interest in tennis. She retired at the end of that year so I didn't get to see her play much sadly.
4. Lina Krasnoroutskaya - her short career has been mired by injury and well pregnancy...but I still hold out hope that she will return to the sport.
5. Vera Dushevina - not the most spectacular player and rather underrated by most (especially after her loss to Justine at Wimbledon this year) but she's very good at what she can do and deserves to go further in the sport than she has so far.

I thought there was something very deja vu about this...
BIG-TODGER - August 21, 2007 07:11 PM (GMT)
1 Navratilova
the Dark Phoenix of tennis, an utterly destructive powerhouse of unbridled energy destroying all it's path, and creating an unparalleled legacy of fear and mayhem. Lots of bad hair days too.
2 Davernport
A fantastic hitter, and as much as it erks me to say it-massive underachiever-big girls do cry.
3 Sanchez Vicario
tenacity on a plate, plump and Picasso-esque-how can anyone not like her.
4 Henin
Remarkable player, and i've calculated if you scale her up to 6ft, she would easily beat any man or woman that has ever played tennis.
5 Serena
I also had Serana as my no5 most hated list too-because she hams it up, but she's a damn fine player too.
SuperBRAT - August 21, 2007 10:49 PM (GMT)
If one is to put this in persepctive it's
Navratlova, Navratilova, Navratilova,Navratilova, Navratilova
But if I have to add to that I'd add Graf, Evert Lloyd (although I used to dislike her but she was just amazing and such great matches with Nav  ), Goolagong, and as a kid I actually saw brit win wimby so Virginia Wade :)
I also liked Navotna, Sanchez-Vicario and a host of others.
Modern day it's Mauresmo and Henin. I do admire the fighting spirit of both Willaimses but equally they are annoying and lack finesse. :)

I'm torn on the sister act too, they can be so brilliant and so irritating too-never accepting they were beaten fair and square, but then playing so superbly, that you just have to applaud them!
SerenaW19 - August 23, 2007 09:00 AM (GMT)
1. Serena Williams - arguably the best woman player ever at her best. She has actually continued developing her game and adding things to it throughtout her career. With her sister she redefined the defintion of a winner (and unforced error :P ). An expressive strong, charismatic, three dimensional woman, who is admired by people worldwide. Is also one of the best ambassadors the sport has ever had.
2. Venus Williams - a stunning athlete, unrivalled in women's tennis. Can excite emotions, take us through a roller coaster match, or simply blast her oppoent off the court in an hour. A great champion of tennis, and a champion for tennis, being the most prominent campaigner for equal pay since the Evertilova and King days.
3. Chris Evert - the first "true" tennis icon. Helped pave the way for the worldwide popularity of the sport. The best clay player ever, and a spectactularly accurate all court player. The Ice-Maiden on court, which only contributed to her being a charming champion :)
4. Steffi Graf - A great champion and a lovely person. One of the most beautiful free flowing games possible, and a genious with the imagination of her shot making. Her game translated accross all surfaces which made for a consistently brilliant career...an athlete who was able to provide us wth high quality entertainment at all times of the year :)
5. Lindsay Davenport - The nicest person on tour (Kim follows closely). She possess a very elegant game, which when in free flow his nigh impossible to beat. A champion through and through, and just someone I have enjoyed to watch and follow through the years really :)
Mon, Jen, Linds, Mart, Rena - January 6, 2008 11:33 AM (GMT)
Just going through, and saw this thread today.
1. Monica Seles-raw, feroscious power. Probably the hardest hitter of a tennis ball ever. Showed such courage in not only coming back after being stabbed, but also won her very first tournament back, a Slam, and got back to the top of the game. Also a very nice woman, a true legend and inspiration.
2. Jennifer Capriati-pushed into the game early, and reached Wimbledon semi at just 14! Knocked off such greats as ASV and Graf to win 1992 Olynpics at 16. Like Monica, came back from such hardships (thouigh hers were somehwat self-inflicted) to become number 1 and win three Slams.
3. Lindsay Davenport-always knocked for being 'overweight' and 'slow', proved critics wrong by using the cleanest shots in the history of tennis to become very successful. Also a very nice person. She is pure class, and does not try to get in the 'limelight' like certain other players.
4. Martina Hingis-used brain, not brawn to scale new heights winning 3 calendar Slams at the tender age of 16. Very entertaining attitude, full of self-belief, and the way she played chess on a tennis court was an amazing thing to behold.
5. Serena Williams-has anyone ever been so self-confidenr? Raised in poverty in a racist part of America, came from nothing to a true great of the game. Has won every Slam, and 8 in total. Tremendous power, which, whilst not as consistent or as hard as Monica/Venus is still unbelievable.
6. Kim Clijsters-probably the nicest tennis player on the circuit in recent years. Never came close to fulfilling her potential, was always dignified in triumph and defeat. Her game was as much defensive as it was offensive, which made for a great contrast. And those splits...

you're having a laugh aren't you?
T01 - February 4, 2008 01:00 PM (GMT)
Mine would be:
1) Jennifer Capriati - Excellent competitor
2) Amelie Mauresmo - Wonderful game
3) Venus Williams - Best athlete and gracious.
4) Lindsay Davenport - Clean hitter and a great person
5) Kim Clijsters - telented, except for her mental weakness.
You cansee that I Will struggle to see my starts playing tennis now with 2 retired, and all.
I Like Ana Ivanovic these days and seems to start to like Sharapova after this Aus Open, for her improvement in tennis skills and personal skills.
