Roger moves within striking distance of Nadal in the race ahead of the US Open. :yahoo:

A good situation to be in as he prepares for his title defense. :D

THIS IS A JOKE (well not for Chet) :P :

mightyjeditribble you are saying that. :yikes: :yikes: .Man you are crazy. :yikes: :yikes: .

Chet please come here quick (where are the troll when you need them most  ): I am sure Chet will come here in few minutes and will explain to you that this is a great news for him, i.e. the master of the FED haters:

Indeed, FED will be even more under pressure: He has already the US open series title (first source of pressure) now the objective to beat Rafa in the race.. :yikes: :yikes: ..He will never manage....I mean this man does not have a career.. And it is well known that this guy is a pure underachiever under pressure

Even though the race and the Entry ranking system shoudl be the same at the end of year, I find it difficult to explain the 2000pts difference between those two now and how it should match up at the end? I guess it means that Federer has roughly 2000 more points to defend than Nadal between now and end of year.

In reply to Darky....

Yes, and the worse is that it will make sense at the end but yet we won't understand.

But let's say, for the sake of the discussion that Nadal beats Federer in the Finals of the Madrid TMS, USO, and Masters and that neither of them play another tournament. Federer would lose 150pts at the TMS, 300 points at the USO and 350 at the Masters = minus 800 points.
While Nadal, would gain, 375 + 750 + 550 = 1675

So 1675 + 800 = 2475, hence Nadal would win,

But let's say Fed retains the USO, yet comes second in Madrid and Masters, then he could end up staying first at the Entry yet come second at the race.....Is this correct?

:phew:

Roger's ranking points from now until the end of the year:

USO 1000
Tokyo 250
Madrid 500
Basel 250
Shanghai 750

Total: 2750

Nadal's ranking points during the same period:

USO 250
Madrid 125
Shanghai 200

Total: 575.

So, indeed, until the rest of the year Roger has about 2000 points more to defend than Rafa.

It's all actually quite logical ... the only thing I don't understand is why they use different scales for the race and for the rankings ... as far as I can tell, 5 ranking points correspond to one race point.

Excellent MJT - This piece of information (5 to 1) makes it very clear for me now. I should have worked it out myself but obviously did not see the ratio.

So it is not going to be a stroll in the park for Federer cause he has simply got to do better than Nadal for the rest of the season. His 2000 point margin don't really matter.

That's very true. However, I'm confident that he should be able to do well until the end of the year; after all, it is one of his best parts of the season.

Also, given that he has an extra 500 points from last year's TMC, it is unlikely that Nadal could become number one before the YEC.

On the other hand --- in contrast to last year, when he clinched the #1 ranking with his US Open win --- it is conceivable that the race will still be alive going into Shanghai. That would be exciting, to be sure.

[ ... perhaps a little bit *too* exciting for my taste ... ]

You right. I can do without the excitement sometimes. This is why I liked Borg. ;)

:)

The downside is that Borg only escaped the "excitement" aspect by retiring early ...

As Roger's career moves on, this excitement will surely increase. But for 2008, I'm still hoping for a season with less of it ...

roflmao roflmao So true for Borg: I was a fan of the guy..But when he decided to leave like that and not really fight against the new generation..well..

It will be an exiting end of the year for both..Rafa will be as well under pressure: I really believe that Djioko will finish the year very well..

True, Djokovic might well do better than Nadal on the hard courts. But he's 300 race points ( = slam win + MS win) behind Roger and Rafa ... so he's unlikely to threaten Rafa for the #2 spot before the end of the year.

Tenez - August 23, 2007 08:20 AM (GMT)
No I can't see Djoko theaten them this year either, But the gap could narrow considerably.

mightyjeditribble - September 7, 2007 09:16 AM (GMT)
With Rafa out, and Roger going on, he's now taken the lead in the race.

If he wins the USO, he will have a commanding lead; if he has at least a decent rest of the season, he should actually clinch the #1 spot before Shanghai. But that's still a long way away.

In the meantime, I hope Nadal recovers quickly from his injury to still give us an exciting rest of the season in the race.
