Title: Best Single Match Performance

SerenaW19 - August 19, 2007 03:35 PM (GMT)
I was reading through the thread in the men's section and I thought it was really good, so I thought Id start one here.

A match that you've seen that you thought was just a sublime performance from a player.

One of the best I can think of is Martina Navratilova defeating Chris Evert 63 61 in the RG Final. I recently purchased this match, and it is definitely the best Martina ever played, perhaps the best anyone has ever played.

Another one that comes to mind is Serena's 61 62 job against Sharapova at the AO this year. For an individual performance I think it might just be the best she's ever played, especially the first set. The Wimbledon 2002 semi final against Mauresmo comes pretty close in terms of how well Serena played, painting the lines with such ease.

Interestingly enough I was trying to think of ones for Steffi Graf or Monica Seles, but I couldn't really think of anyone that particularly stood out as perhaps the best match ever played

Serena at the Aussie Open final was quite brilliant, Serena was so zoned in,
she had that look in her eyes, and when Sharapova hit the ball straight at Serena-well if looks could kill.
Venus against Sharapova at Wimlbedon this year-poor Sharapova what had she done to make em wanna beat her up like that?
The French final sounds very interesting, i've never seen that one-and on Everts best surface too.

It's the trump card in the Navratilova-Evert debate :D

Evert did double bagel Navratilova on clay in the early 80's at a smaller tournament I think, so what goes around comes around.

Graf beating Zvereva 6-0 6-0 in the 1988 RG final. Although Zvereva was riddled with nerves, still only a legend could deliver that kind of mauling. Steffi at her athletic best

Serena beating Sharapova 6-1 6-2 at the Aussie this year. Such unbelievable power added with remarkable control. Just absolute demolished Sharapova with effortless ease. The best shot-making i've ever seen for a long time.

What year was that RG final? I seem to remember 1986 as a year when Evert-lloyd beat Navratilova in the final there.

The Final I was talking about was in 1984, Evert beat Navratilova in 1985 and 1986 in classic three setters :)

1999 Key Biscayne Hingis Vs Seles 6-0 6-0
What a mauling that was! Ruthless and vicious!

Pierce vs Graf, 94 RG semi. Just swept Steffi completely aside with such ferocious groundstrokes. Steffi looked like a rookie after that peformance, it was that good from Pierce. Mary also moving great in that match too.

I'm sure DL would agree :P , Hingis beating Venus 6-1 6-1 at the Australian Open B)

It was a total error fest from Venus though Obliv roflmao

I think one of Hingis's best performances was against Mauresmo in the Aussie Open final :)

Hey guys im back from holiday btw. Umm I never saw the 88 RG final but surely with that kind of scoreline it's got to be up there.

Serena's Aussie Open final victory was immense. She has other performances that also stand out such as the 2003 RG QF against Mauresmo which I recently downloaded.

I have heard alot about the 2002 Wimbledon semifinal and would like to know if anyone has a link to it on megaupload cause i cant find it on WTAW media.

2007 Wimbledon Venus def. Shazza was pretty much a beatdown although I know she had some great performances late 2000 I think?

Actually Seles was injured even before the match. She said that she never should have played. Shows her class though by not giving up for the fans.

I'd go with Seles beating Graf at the FO in 1992, 10-8 in the third set. Sublime performances from both champs.

I wouldn't say "toned down" exactly. Did you not see the Althea Gibson thread? :D

Kim Clijsters was outstanding when she played Kuznetsova in the season ending championships last year. it was the best i had ever seen her play and showed that if she had produced a few more of those displays in key matches of her career (GS finals and matches v justine) then i think she would be up there with the williams sisters and justine in number of GS's won.
