I don't know what to make of Serena...
Sounds bad but I hope she really is injured... such a shame for someone of her talent to go on wasting it like this if not.

She must been fined all her prize money made this year for withdrawing..

I know Serena fan's may find this a bit harsh but you gotta get the feeling she ain't got the desire..

liam_valid - August 18, 2007 03:18 PM (GMT)
im a Serena fan, but i look at it like she will never play a toury outsthe slams then im not disappointed. If she does play a tier 1 its a nice surprise :)

trisco - August 18, 2007 03:27 PM (GMT)
If she then goes on to win that Slam though it makes a bit of a mockery outta the women's game...

Well either that are show she is an absolute legend..

liam_valid - August 18, 2007 03:33 PM (GMT)
I think its B. whatever her motivational issues are, she has nothing to prove to anyone that she already is a legend in the sport and her winning a slam should not come as much of a surprise, as even if she isnt as fit as the other girls, she still knows how to play

I dont think it's a mockery, it shows how damn good she is. I mean if Federer did that, would he be said to mocking the mens game?

Serena plays when she's healthy, and unfortunately she hasnt been since Wimby so she wont play. Serena has all the desire in the world, just look at her Wimbledon peformance against Daniela and jUstine.

Yeah ok, I get ya there about desire..

Maybe I shoulda just said laziness then :P

She has the desire when she is on the court but actually getting her there... it's another thing. :P ;)

I just hope she can get over these injuries fast and have a good solid full year soon as she ain't getting any younger..

Shocked me the other day when i relaised how old Venus and Martina are now! I always thought I was much older than em but they are gonna be drawing their pension like me soon. :D

Venus is 27, and Hingis will be next month i believe. It's hardly over the hill roflmao

Well, either that or insane amounts of partying and boozing which is the category I probably fall into. (hic)

Serena :( I hope she makes NY, but I'm not hopeful

Entering New Haven was nothing but a marketing ploy by Anne Worcester. Serena probably never intended to play and got paid just for entering. Even with Lindsay's comeback in doubles the ticket sales were struggling due to lack of star power. Anne Worcester doubled ticket sales or something just by getting Serena to "enter."

It's politics, not tennis. Serena hasn't played the week before a Grand Slam since 2002, when she got injured, and she never will again. Risk getting injured the week before a Grand Slam just for a tier two title?

If you look at all the press release statements by Anne Worcester at the Pilot Penn, it's pretty clear that this was a marketing ploy.

I know

I don't blame Serena, I mean she was probably only trying to help sell tickets for women's tennis. But the problem is she got people's hopes up and then dashed them 8 days later

But when all is said and done Im sure what the fans want to see most is Serena playing healthily and well at the US Open. And playing New Haven would impede that.

By the way did you know that there is a 25% chance of Venus and Serena drawing each other in the R16

dl04 - August 19, 2007 02:44 PM (GMT)
25% chance? I swear its increasing every year roflmao

I think it might change though, after all Venus and Serena were in opposite draws at Wimby ;)

SerenaW19 - August 19, 2007 02:45 PM (GMT)
I know, we'd have had an all Williams Final if it wasn't for thumb

Well hopefully luck will be with us again :D

Yeah, i want another all-williams final so badly roflmao

I just love the tension and drama they provide

Yes, I like being able to cut the atmosphere with a knife, as opposed to falling asleep like in some finals

You still get unbelievable shotmaking though- that Aussie Open final

Venus hit one unbelievable running forehand pass and Serena hit an unbelievable backhand pass

SerenaW19 - August 19, 2007 03:07 PM (GMT)
You do get some unbelievable rallies in all Williams finals that I've never seen in any other tennis matches.

The problem is, as both Venus and Serena have such similar games and cover the courts so well, you don't get as many winners as you would against other players, and they push each other to the limit so much, quite often they force the other into an error.

It's all worth it for those sublime patches though where they live or die to win a point :D

Venus frustrates Serena by how well she can get back some of her biggest shots, and Serena frustrates Venus by how she crushes Venus's serve back. Noone can expose their games like they can roflmao

If that is true then the fans are the ones that lose out and it's where a third party should step in and fine the wrong-doers.

On another note, I wouldn't blame Serena for playing just the GS events. She doesn't really have much more to prove other than increase her GS tally.

Dark_Necrofear - August 20, 2007 08:50 AM (GMT)
I just hope she plays at Flushing Meadow I really want her or Venus to win there I couldnt possibly handle Maria Defending or Justine winning there. But then again I hope that one of the Serbs actually break the Grand Slam barrier!
