Title: Your favourite country in the world...

Sam - August 16, 2007 10:42 AM (GMT)
Which countries are peoples favoruites in the world? (other than the one you live in). You don't have to have been there, do tell all though! :D

yorkshire - August 16, 2007 11:55 AM (GMT)
I've not been to that many but Italy is one of my favourites.

The climate, the food, the people. The way of life is just totally different to here.

If you ever watch Italians at work they always seem so relaxed, as if they're almost gliding around. It makes you think how on earth are they getting all their work done, but they do somehow!

Tenez - August 16, 2007 12:31 PM (GMT)
I have never been to the Middle East but from Afghanistan, Pakhistan, Iran, Irak all look (ed) great countries to visit. Cultufre, Landscape, food, and i am sure people as well seem genuinely friendly. Unfortunately, the relation with our western world are bit messed up and fear it will take years if not decades until we can travel out there safely again.

A real shame in that respect.

Mexico is awesome  If i had tro move anywhere though, i would prob choose Spain (esp. Barcelona)

I really like Switzerland. It is so varied and so clean...*cough*...anyway...I really like Zuerich and Wengen (and the rest of the Lauterbrunnen Valley) is beautiful in summer as well as winter.

Have to go again this year, never been in the Summer only Winter to ski resorts, I wanted to do a bit of cycling this summer but don't think it will happen now so def gonna have to go there skiing again this year.

France is a very close second for similar reasons.

I also liked China too although i struggle to explain why when I think about it..

Tenez - August 16, 2007 05:31 PM (GMT)
Well I can pick up France also cause I don't live there. ;)

But just returning from there for my summer Holidays, it is really a great country. Hopefully the new president won't change it much.

1 - the landscape. So varied, from cornwall type to palm trees and riviera but also cottage like going through desertic landscape and high mountains. There is everything. I even discovered turquoise sea between St Topez and Cavalaire without a building in sight for miles. Simply heaven like.

2 - then the food as varied and great as the landscape, it is simply excellent and still very affordable .

3 - Architecture: beautiful villages and towns, maybe not as clean as those in Switzerland but in my view with more charm and life and therefore pretty similar to some in toscan.

4 - people hmmmm next. They are actually quite friendly but I agree moody in Paris. People have not much money but there is still quality of life and I do intend to retire there one day.

5 - It is difficult to build and destroy the landscape, It is well protected. I used to love Spain very much and I have known it for more tahn 30 years, but it has turned into a huge building site constantly expanding.

I guess for all those reasons, France is still the country the most visited in the world.

Italy would come second for me. Countryside and food second to none but the beaches are generally not as pretty and landscape not as varied as France.

But above all, I love Europe for its diversity of culture and landscape and unless accident, I 'd love to end my days in this continent.

Colombia...

Right now it's in a sorry state, but it's the most beautiful country in South America. If it wasn't for the economic situation, I'd still be living there. Good special crop too. :D

Going back there soon for the first time in 5 years... have missed it...

Same hope for me.. maybe not Paris as such but some tiny little village just near the alps....
Bliss..

trisco - August 16, 2007 11:07 PM (GMT)
Where are you from Tenez btw? Or where are you now should I say?

Tenez - August 16, 2007 11:23 PM (GMT)
I live in London but you may have guessed I am French.

The Alps is an excellent choice. Do you know Chamonix?

Where are you from?

trisco - August 16, 2007 11:33 PM (GMT)
I'm English, living in the Peak District near Sheffield.
I didn't realise you were French, i actually thought you were American? I think I remember something about you coming back from USA to Wimbledon when you didn't get to see any tennis? I am gonna dig your post out and use it in the CC Magazine if that is ok?

I adore the French language and everything about France that I have so far come across.. It's my life aim to end up there, especially somewhere centred near Chamonix.. can't stress how much so too!
Only been a few times to Chamonix and I imagine a lot of the people who live there get fed up of us Brits ust shooting across and invading but I love it, the town, the skiing the atmosphere, so friendly. I basically am just looking for somewhere to live where I can easily pop up in the alps be it winter or summer, somewhere with good food, good people and just generally a great way of life.

Where do you come from in France yourslef?

trisco - August 16, 2007 11:35 PM (GMT)
Man I am getting itchy feet now just thinking about it!!! lol

Can't wait to go back this Christmas...

If I seem a little excited I have had a few glasses of wine btw.. :P

Tenez - August 17, 2007 12:11 AM (GMT)
lol

Good memory. I was returning from a business trip in the US and tried to get to Wimbledon as I had tickets for Wimbledin that day. I live about 1 mile from centre court.

I was born in toulouse but spent most of my youth in Paris.

My wife is currently in Chamonix with the children till the end of the week. They go there twice a year. It is very nice and there aren't too many English, your ancestors kind of discovered the place and were amongst the first to climb the mountains there.

Sleep tight!

Out of beer? I'd offer you some vodka but I'm thinking I might still be drunk at work tomorrow if I din't put the bottle back in the freezer...

btw - what are the laws on cannabis in this country at the moment? I'm sure they're supposed to confiscate any they find on your person, right?

I think the time may have come Wise....
Time for me to hang up my empty glass too...

Just noticed your addition to the post... nah, I don't think they are supposed to confiscate it are they?
I think as long as it is obviously just for personal use then you should be ok? I may have got that completly wrong though..

Have you just been pulled up over it?
I got taken into a police station about 7 years back after they saw me coming out of a known sellers house, they pulled my taxi over, i stuffed it quickly down my underwear, they strip searched me in the cell, after I had already told them I had it on me cos I didn't want to get in shit but, when I pulled down my underwear... it wasn't there.. I couldn't explain it as I had no idea where it was. They let me go as they couldn't do anything but as we were walking out, the cop said I bet I know where it is, went in the back of the car we just got out of and there it was on the floor... gave it me straight back and said go and enjoy yourself!

Wht take me in the first place!!??

Anyways, sorry, I don't think they should take it off you no..

Sounds like I got an equally generous policeman... was taking a cheeky al fresco against my neighbour's wall when this cop walks up and tells me to 'put it away' - now i thought he was talking about the f*cking spliff I had in my left hand, s o I turned round and started apologising, while pissing all over this poor guy's shoes - he wasn't too happy, but I apologised some more, came up with some absolute crap about how my wife hadd just given birth (I'm not even married  ) and and eventually he just let me go.

Now i thought he should have a) nicked my spliff B) given me one of those on the spot fines for urinating ina public place or whatever - i saw one of those ITV documentaties, sure that's what they do now?

anyway, lucky escape i guess. hope you don't feel too bad in the morning - i'm staying up a couple hurs more in order to avoid said hangover.

Night! :ok:

it probably would have meant far to much paperwork Wise.

actually, cannabis is still class C, so strictly speaking they *could* take it off you if they want, but tbh, they just don't really care. Unless you had a kilo stuffed down your pants, they really are not going to bother. He could have taken the spliff off you, but for what? My guess is, it probably wasn't the spliff that was causing you to piss on the guys shoes!

Dinky Jo - August 17, 2007 07:07 AM (GMT)
oh, favourite country - I went to Egypt a few years back and that is just amazing. The people are really nice, everywhere was just so atmospheric and the history....well, i think it's difficult to grasp when you're there quite how *old* everything is! I mean, the structures like the pyramids are just unbelievable! Plus, the paintings inside the tombs at the valley of the kings are just so well preserved.

I really did like Egypt - it's nice and cheap as well, would love to go back there!

oh dear. I guess the experiences you have somewhere colour your perception of them - an ordinary place can seem 10x better if something amazing happens there....or the reverse can happen clearly.

Switzerland really is worth a visit in the summer. I'm going back there for 5 days (only :( ) in september to see my sister and to go to the Weltklasse Golden League Meeting in Zurich....then to see some more of the country afterwards.

I have been to China and I have a love-hate relationship with it. I loved most of the time I was there but that was more down to the people I was partying with in Shanghai and stuff than the country - though some of the sights are so breath taking and you don't believe you've actually been to the Great Wall etc the next day it seems so unreal. Anyway I just really hate the Chinese mentality of "we are the best nation EVER'....it really ticks me off as does their inability to say 'no', instead they said "perhaps it would be best if..." just say NO for F sake ! :P Sorry got a little carried away there. All I can say is that China is an experience and there's lots to do there, but it may not always be a good experience.

I think my favourite place in the world that I have been to is Malta - for such a tiny place there is so much, in terms of things to look at and character, and the people are marvellous! I also love the fact you can actually swim between Islands (Have actually seen sporting excursions where people swim from Malta to Comino, then on to Gozo!)

Of places I haven't visited, I would love to have a look at India and Australia, they just fascinate me, and I would also love to get a chance to look at Antarctica. I just think it would be incredible there, the "silent continent" :)

Yes this is the preconceived idea we got even before it all started. But if you hear from all the western people who actually got there for work or leisure before "it all started" they usually have had a great experience.

France would probably be second cos of family trips there every year as a child.
