Title: US Open Series
Description: Halfway through now....
Scotsguy - August 16, 2007 08:25 AM (GMT)
Current standings
1.Djokovic-100pts
2.Roddick-97
3.Stepanek-95pts
4.Federer-70pts
5.Dancevic ( :o ) -60pts
6.Tursunov-50pts
Thats the current standings, however given that we are now in the round that starts giving points in Cincinatti the standings change a little.
1.Roddick-112pts (+15)
2.Djokovic-100pts
3.Stepanek-95pts
4.Federer-85pts (+15)
5.Blake-62pts (+15)
6.Dancevic-60pts
If Roddick wins he stays top (obviously) but if he loses to Fed in the final he Roger will be leading by 3 points, same if Fed makes the final and Andy loses in the semis, however if Fed loses in the semis and Andy loses in the quarters Andy stays top, unless Blake wins the whole thing or makes the final in which case he takes over both (if they lose in the R16, or the R16/QF fo Roger...

Presumably people will pick up points next week in New Haven. So if Blake loses in the final against Fed, but wins next week in New Haven, could he still take the top spot?
mightyjeditribble - August 18, 2007 10:02 AM (GMT)
New standings:
1. Roger Federer (SUI) 115
2. Andy Roddick (USA) 112
3. Novak Djokovic (SRB) 100
4. Radek Stepanek (CZE) 95
5. James Blake (USA) 92
6. Nikolay Davydenko (RUS) 70
Lleyton Hewitt (AUS) 70
8. Frank Dancevic (CAN) 60
9. Dmitry Tursunov (RUS) 50
10. Sam Querrey (USA) 47
And to answer my own question: if Fed wins Cincy, he will have 170 points; if Blake reaches the final, he will have 147 points; he would need to reach the final in New Haven to top Fed in that case.
If Fed loses against Hewitt, then whoever wins the title in Cincy will take the lead at the end of the week.
Overall, if Blake wins next week in New Haven, then he would win the USO series, *unless* he loses to Davydenko today *and* Fed wins the tournament.
(I didn't check whether Davydenko or Hewitt play next week though --- if so, that might complicate matters.)
Tenez - August 18, 2007 10:17 AM (GMT)
Davydenko will win the race. He is the only one that will play in new haven or try to go far there......he is relentless.

Davydenko is indeed down for the New Haven tournament.
However, if he doesn't beat Blake today, then even winning that tournament will not be enough to overtake whoever wins Cincy.
And if he loses to Roger in the Cincy final, he will likewise not be able to overtake Fed.
*If* Hewitt beats Roger and Kolya beats Blake, then Davydenko's chances aren't so bad. But how likely is it that this happens?
Tenez - August 18, 2007 11:17 AM (GMT)
I really can see Davydenko beating James tonight, especially if he plays like last night. His pace should force Blake to make quite a few UEs.
But as you said, it is not all down to him. He is such a money grabber that I simply fancied his chance more than the others who will concentrate on the USO instead of the money part.

I would like to see James make the final here. But I agree that, based on yesterday's form (I didn't see Davy, but the result seems to speak for itself), Davydenko might be the favorite despite their head-to-head.
Go James
Go Roger

Richard Bloomfield has just been hammered in the Pilot Pen quallies by Kuznetzov 6-1 6-3
mightyjeditribble - August 18, 2007 08:49 PM (GMT)
With Fed's win now, it is basically between him and Blake for the USO series win, unless Kolya manages to win Cincy and does well in New Haven.
I don't think Fed's ever won the USO series (obviously not one of his main priorities ...) Wouldn't it be interesting if he did it this year, when he has not been playing as well as in past years? It probably wouldn't mean more to him than a chance to buy a few more diamond earrings for Mirka though. ;)

New standings, now with Roger and Blake getting to the final:
1. Roger Federer (SUI) 140
2. James Blake (USA) 117
3. Andy Roddick (USA) 112
4. Novak Djokovic (SRB) 100
5. Radek Stepanek (CZE) 95
6. Nikolay Davydenko (RUS) 70
Lleyton Hewitt (AUS) 70
The winner tomorrow will get an additional 30 points.
As already mentioned, the only ones of these guys who are down for New Haven are Fed and Blake. There are 50 points at stake at New Haven, meaning that Davydenko could still come third by winning, or even second if Blake loses tomorrow and doesn't pick up any points.
It seems I messed up my quick & dirty calculations before  If Fed wins tomorrow, then Blake has no chance of catching up with him. In any case, Fed is guaranteed at least second place in the USO series --- though I expect that, frankly, he doesn't give a d@mn.

In your last post You say Fed plays in New Haven next week. Does he? I really doubt it.
Dinky Jo - August 19, 2007 10:34 AM (GMT)
I suspect he means Davydenko - obviously an easy mistake to make, mixing up fed and Kolya  :P

That should teach me for posting late at night ...
But I hope my posts are at least more coherent than W_A's late-night Saturday posts ... :P
Of course I meant Davydenko ... who looks a little bit like Fed, really ... well, they're both male ... and both play tennis ...
mightyjeditribble - August 19, 2007 10:09 PM (GMT)
So now Fed has won the US Open series for the first time ...
Actually, at least on paper his start to the second half of the season is more successful than it was last year, with one win and one final in the two Masters series tournaments.
His loss against Djokovic might still sting ... but he's really set himself up well for the US Open now.
Go Fed!
And he's within a few points of Nadal in the race now as well. C'mon!

Yes, and he dug another 2000 points gap in the Entry ranking. He is now big favourite to end the year at number 1.

Barring a desaster at the USO, or a vast improvement from Nadal during the second half of the year, it is indeed difficult to see Fed losing his #1 spot.
And, as I noted on another thread, he will break Steffi Graf's record of consecutive weeks at #1 next week as well. :yahoo:

While we are at it on this thread, check the stats comparing him with Sampras, he has now done better than Sampras at the same age, in all department except carpet....and that's cause carpet is not much played anylonger.

Another interesting thing about these past weeks is that Fed really is able to get himself out of trouble with his serve and with smart play, even if he's maybe not moving as well as he might like to.
To me this indicates, even more than before, that Fed should be able to win titles on the fast surfaces for many years to come. (Much as Sampras did.)
