Description: 11th - 19th August

Dinky Jo - August 12, 2007 07:57 PM (GMT)

MissSospanFach - August 12, 2007 09:12 PM (GMT)
The field looks a bit thin, don't you think? Especially if you compare this draw to the showing at the men's at Cincy where there are so many tough first round matches.

SerenaW19 - August 12, 2007 09:28 PM (GMT)
Yes it is quite weak for a tier one, however if the seeds hold then the quarters and semis should be interesting.

Ivanovic and Jankovic, both in form and match hardened should be able to challenge Justine, look to Chakvatedze and Petrova to cause perhaps an upset or two in the quarters, Kuzzy is coming back from injury so I don't know about her

Also we're still waiting for Bartoli to build on Wimbledon...I should think the world number one is the favourite here though, with commanding head to heads over the other top four seeds. Plus Justine won this tournament in 2003 I beleive, so has good memories here.

Sure does. I had hoped for better.

Well it would have been, had Amelie, Venus, Sharapova, Hingis, Vaidisova and Chakvatedze all not withdrawn

MissSospanFach - August 13, 2007 07:48 AM (GMT)
I think one of the seeds to make a first round exit will be Peer as she meets Krajicek in the first round.

GS2 - August 13, 2007 08:40 AM (GMT)
It's not really that weak - ok it's weaker than a Master Series but Tier 1's usually are. The only one that gets comparable fields is Miami which is now also mandatory for the women.

It's got 4 of the top 5 and has any other Tier 1 except Miami managed that this year?

GS2 - August 13, 2007 08:41 AM (GMT)
Decent draw this for Justine - Tu shouldn't be too tricky in the 2nd round then Srebotnik or Bondarenko both of who just aren't in her class. Would be nice to see a QF with Petrova since they always have good matches - Nadia should make it unless Schnyder is on form . A rematch against Ivanovic in the semis would be good to see as well - Ana certainly won't be nervous like she was in Paris & should make the semis depending on how tired she is after LA. The seeds in Ana's section of the draw (Safina, Bondarenko & Bartoli) have all been disappointing this summer on hardcourt. Bartoli has a horrible draw with Kirilenko in the 2nd round.

It's amazing how much Kirilenko has turned things around in the last few weeks - a month ago we were writing her off and now she 's probably the most dangerous floater in this draw.

Bottom half is more open. Dementieva has a nasty potential first match against the winner of Schiavone/Paszek then probably Golovin )who hopefully will have a good run here - she has QF points to defend at the US. Will be interesting to see Kuznetsova's form in her first match since Wimbledon - her draw is ok, Safarova hasn't looked that dangerous recently so she should be able to get to the semis.

Last quarter is more of a minefield - Chakvetadze could face Rezai then Krajicek or Peer and then Jankovic. Chakvetadze has a great record against Jankovic so if she is playing she could reach the semis here. If Peer is going to end this run of first round exits then she's going to have to do it the hard way against Krajicek - somthing tells me she won't manage it!

BTW has Chakvetadze withdrawn? I have heard that rumoured but she's still in the draw?

Actually you're right thinking about it, it seemed a little weaker as so many people have withdrawn, but it is the strongest tier one since Miami really.

We've had much weaker tier ones this year like Tokyo, Charleston and San Diego.

GS2 - August 13, 2007 03:42 PM (GMT)
Krajicek serving at 4-1. She has served 6 double faults so far and fended off 5 break points! Peer has won more points on Krajicek's serve than she has her own!

Schiavone has just gone 5-2 up.

Vinci took the first set 6-0.

Looks like Wozniacki won't do well - currently trailing 5-0.

SerenaW19 - August 13, 2007 04:42 PM (GMT)
Wozniacki putting up much more of a fight in the second set, leading 6-5, Kraijek giving Peer a run for her money, but facing an uphill battle to win.

Paszek and Schiavone looking evenly match and locked in battle in the third.

Buttercup - August 14, 2007 01:17 PM (GMT)
yaaaay Svetlana plays tonight  :yahoo:

I really want to know what form shes in!

MissSospanFach - August 14, 2007 02:35 PM (GMT)
She's had a long time off now but I expect her to do quite well this week.

GS2 - August 14, 2007 04:09 PM (GMT)
Dechy, Razzano & Camerin all took the first set 6-4. Particularly impressive from Camerin (or particularly poor from Bondarenko) as she won 6 games in a row after trailing 4-0.

Daniilidou also leading 6-2, 2-3.

GS2 - August 14, 2007 04:32 PM (GMT)
Camerin, Rezai & Gagliardi all a break up in the 2nd set.

After a major battle Daniilidou finally holds serve to lead 6-2, 5-3

GS2 - August 14, 2007 04:41 PM (GMT)
Daniilidou is the first winner of the day 6-2, 6-3 over Dulko.

good to see that Danilidou has recovered from that injury/illness (I can't remember which) from last week.

Russiafan - August 14, 2007 06:40 PM (GMT)
The results so far...

(11) Shahar Peer (ISR) d. Tathiana Garbin (ITA) 63 62
(Q) Maria Elena Camerin (ITA) d. (15) Alona Bondarenko (UKR) 64 63
Eleni Daniilidou (GRE) d. Gisela Dulko (ARG) 62 63
Virginie Razzano (FRA) d. Aravane Rezai (FRA) 64 46 63
Nathalie Dechy (FRA) d. (Q) Emmanuelle Gagliardi (SUI) 64 75
(Q) Andreja Klepac (SLO) d. Meilen Tu (USA) 63 61

Camerin's upset of Bondarenko is a bit surprising, but then again Alona seems to be very up and down.

MissSospanFach - August 14, 2007 07:59 PM (GMT)
And we get the first retirement of the tournament, Srebotnik bows out losing 1-6 2-4.

MissSospanFach - August 14, 2007 09:56 PM (GMT)
Is Alkesandra Wozniack the luckiest person in the draw? Trailing 4-6 0-5 and then her opponent, Rodionova, retires!!

She was winning by that scoreline!

Rodionova's famous for her 'interesting' on-court antics (nicknamed Nastya), and apparently she didn't look badly injured in this match - i.e. she should have played the final game to give her opponent a proper victory.

Oops, yeah I realised that when I checked the results this morning. I thought it was strange but it's what the scoreboard said!

eek :yikes: nadias lost the first set

Wise_Analyst - August 15, 2007 07:29 PM (GMT)
Kirilenko retired at 2-6, 1-2 down to Bartoli.

Golovin fought past Cibulkova 6-4, 6-3.

Daniilidou into a decider with Camerin - come on Eleni...

Petrova already a break up on Dubois in the second, would expect her to win the next two sets fairly routinely.

vivahate - August 15, 2007 08:11 PM (GMT)
i'm off to check out henin and jankovic matches :)

will report back...
