Title: Aussies pay the penalty against the Azzuri
Description: Italy 1 Australia 0
sir matchstickmen - June 26, 2006 06:45 PM (GMT)
The Aussies missed a big chance of an upset there, with the Italians down to ten men for virtually all of the second half.
And what a daft way to concede a penalty in injury time! Ah well, the Aussies will be happy with how they've done anyway!

 :bs:
some of it was the Aussies fault for not attacking enough :tsk: but that was not a penalty (well should not have been)

The penalty was debatable, and a sad way for the Aussies campaign to end.
I don't think the Italian could have got out of the way of Neill's body, and as Neill missed the ball I suppose technically it was a penalty, but a very harsh one :(
but Oz is now officially on the football map!

Yet another sport that the englsih create (or at least set the rules up for) and eventually the convicts dominate them?...lets hope not

Hey we still got further than them - keep the positive energy going!

What gets me is that the groups for Euro 2008 look far more difficult than those in this world cup! Some are quite horrific! And lop-sided!
Group A
Portugal
Poland
Serbia & Mont
Belgium
Finland
Armenia
Azerbaijan
Kazakhstan
Group B
France
Italy
Ukraine
Scotland
Lithuania
Georgia
Faroe Islands
Group C
Greece
Turkey
Norway
Bosnia
Hungary
Moldova
Malta
Group D
Czech Republic
Germany
Slovakia
Republic of Ireland
Wales
Cyprus
San Marino
Group E
ENGLAND
Croatia
Russia
Israel
Estonia
Macedonia
Andorra
Group F
Sweden
Spain
Denmark
Latvia
Iceland
Northern Ireland
Liechtenstein
Group G
Holland
Romania
Bulgaria
Slovenia
Albania
Belarus
Luxembourg
Top 2 in each group qualify automatically, but look at Group B, which Scotland are in!!!

And they've joined the AFC...
They'll be in the Asian cup :yikes:
It'll be tougher for Japan this time to get a 4th title...
...Though last time, we won with only one European-based player, Nakamura :D It was a B team TBH B)
If we send our best players(it's worth it!), we'll be firm favourites.
PS: did anybody see Kawaguchi's fabulous saves in the PSO against Jordan 2 years ago?

Hang on a minute - if Austrailia are in it, and South Korea are in it, you're 3rd favourites ;)

I think that Iran has proven to be a very good team these last years - they eliminated South Korea in the Asian cup in 2004 :o
We should have played them in the final instead of China  The refs were home whistlers
3rd faves?
Just because Australia performed well for once doesn't totally mean a huge deal. And plus, their capitain(and arguably their best player) is leaving after this world cup(Viduka)
Honestly, Japan was far from it's best in the World cup. Takahara and Yanagisawa were disappointing.
I really don't think that we're 3rd favourites. We are after all the defending champions. We beat the Koreans in our last meeting too.
But who knows? Between those three(arguably four) countries, it's hard to tell who's THE favourite.
I'd just say that Japan, Korea and Australia are the favourites.
sir matchstickmen - June 29, 2006 08:55 AM (GMT)
Australia will be favourites in that. they have players from all over Europe in their squad, and no other Asian team has players of the class of Harry Kewell, Brett Emerton etc.
SK lost that Iran match 4-3 it seems - Iran are a decent team but to be honest they could just go a bit saudi-shaped at the same time!
At the end of the day the Asian cup is largely irrelevant in terms of world football anyway!

Agreed.
Japanese players are short wimps.
Korean players are cheats.
Chinese players...Same thing.
Saudis are fat.
Iran's players are...Well I'd put them as 2nd favourite.
Where is it to be hosted btw? Not that I care that much about it...
