Hingis and Stepanek split up

MONTREAL, Aug 11 (Reuters) - Former women's world number one Martina Hingis and Czech Radek Stepanek, the highest profile couple in tennis, have broken off their engagement.

A spokesman for the ATP said on Saturday: "Radek asked me to pass on a message announcing that he and Martina Hingis have split up, they will remain good friends."

The pair became engaged last November when Stepanek proposed to Hingis in Prague.

Stepanek was beaten 7-6 6-2 by world number one Roger Federer in the semi-finals of the Montreal Masters on Saturday.

:P Just Kidding, on a serious note, I always thought it was going to be a long engagement and no happy ever after.... :) but hingis and her men friends are a special topic....

I do wish both Martina and Radek all the best in their next plan of action..
For better or for worse life goes on :) hopefully hingis returns to winning ways ......

Must be difficult when their respective tours take them in different directions most of the year.

Yea, and considering the tour lasts most of the year too. I'm surprised that two tennis players who are active on the tour can have a relationship, they must hardly see each other.

I just searched the reliable source that is wikipedia and, you're quite right, her Mum is Czech and her Dad is Slovak but she moved to Switzerland as a child when they divorced. Incidentally her original name is Martina Hingisova.

Apologies to all who knew that already, I'm not a Hingis fan and so didn't know any of it!

I only realised this fairly recently too, didn't know the first time round.

Her full name is/was Hingisova I think. But was changed when she moved to Switzerland.
