Title: Results: your official favourite players!
MrInvisible - August 7, 2007 10:37 AM (GMT)
Well, you voted in your thousands :) (well, not quite, more like in your dribs and drabs!), and here are the results of your favourit players...a few surprises here...lets go...starting with, countdown of the ladies' scores...
I have the top 20 odd for you...
At joint 20th, we have a few...
Golovin - not quite delivered her potential yet, but popular player nevertheless, and easy on the eye
Kirilenko - another favourite amongst male fans
Vaidisova - polled surprisingly low, the young Czech lass has had another good year, and along with the above two, not bad in the looks department
Molik - the Aussie has struggled with injuries, but plays an exciting style of tennis - a good performer in the doubles...
Next, for the top 18...
MrInvisible - August 7, 2007 10:52 AM (GMT)
At 18, its...
... Marion Bartoli. Undoubtedly owes her place in this list to her improbable run to final at Wimbledon, Bartoli won a few over with her unconventional tennis and gritty determination.
... and Dushevina, who I admittedly know very little about, but well done Dushevina!
Then, a few on joint 14th place together...
...Davenport ... was technically retired when the poll started, but she's coming back, for doubles at least. Would undoubtedly be even higher if she was still playing full-time, but we'll let her off for having a baby!
... Chakvetadze...been having a good summer so far, the Russian benefiting from the higher profile she's enjoying of late...
...Krajicek ...Won a few fans after her great run of form at Wimbledon this year
...Petrova ... not quite a slam contender, but the Russian has a few fans on here...
Next, lets have a look who's on at 13th place...
MrInvisible - August 7, 2007 11:09 AM (GMT)
At 13th place, we have...
Safina...well known and respected in her own right as a top player, not just Marat's sister!
At 12th place we have...
...Dementieva...not having the best of years, but the lovely Elena has clearly not been forgotten, despite her ever present dodgy serve...
In 11th place, we have...
...Pierce...to be honest, I'd completely forgotten about her...is she still injured? Not retired presumably.
Well, lets have a look at who made it into the top 10...
MrInvisible - August 7, 2007 11:26 AM (GMT)
At number 10 ** deep breath ** its ...
Maria Sharapova. Lower down in the poll than what you'd expect, Maria's always been a 'love her or hate her' type character, loved for her battling qualities (and looks), loathed for her shireking, diva-esque character traits and Americanisms...
at number 9, its...
Myskina...a surprise choice, she's plummeted down the rankings and has a far lower profile than in the past, but has retained her popularity nevertheless...
At 8, its...
Kuznetsova...a classy player, but not quite firing on all cylinders since that US Open win...
So, a trio of Russians, lets see who's next...
MrInvisible - August 7, 2007 11:33 AM (GMT)
At 7, its...
...Serena Williams - admired by many for her talent and dogged determination, but likely to have lost a few fans after her drama-queen-esque behaviour at Wimbledon this year...
At 6, its...
...big sister...Venus, less controversial than her sister, and winning Wimbledon as an 'outsider' again, Venus clearly has a few fans out there...
Now, lets have a look at that top 5, but be warned, the scoring is very tight up there!
MrInvisible - August 7, 2007 11:44 AM (GMT)
At 5, its...
Ana Ivanovic...a very popular player, whether for her sunny personality, looks or dynamic tennis, Ana has won a lot of fans this year...
At 4, just missing out on a higher placing by 1 point, its...
...Justine Henin...Maybe not quite as controversial as before, but not always particularly well liked by a few fans. The Belgian star though evidently polled high for her stunning backhand, all-court game as well as her gritty determination.
Then, we have two players on joint 2nd, both on same number of points...
...Martina Hingis - arguably more popular now than during her first career, but not having a brilliant year, Hingis is a hugely popular player thanks to her clever strategic game, which contrasts with lots of baseline bashing on the tour. Popularity also helped by her positive attitude and twinkle in her eye (Radek's a lucky man).
...Jelena Jankovic - arguably the hardest working player on the tour, probably played more tournaments this year than Venus and Serena combined :) - another player with a good attitude, and won more fans thanks to her great double act with Jamie Murray at this year's Wimbledon mixed doubles...
Now, I wonder who's at number one...
MrInvisible - August 7, 2007 11:47 AM (GMT)
 And at number one, its...
...Amelie Mauresmo...she may have flopped at this year's Wimbledon, but the stylish all-court player has left her mark on many fans, whether for her delightful tennis, or endearing vulnerability - lets hear it for...
Amelie Mauresmo, the most popular WTA player, as voted for by you!
MrInvisible - August 7, 2007 11:50 AM (GMT)
Breakdown of mens' scores to come, but will wait for someone to reply to these first!

Oh goodie
I will be honest - I forgot all about this and never voted :(
Had I done so Henin would be higher as I'd have had her in my top 3, maybe with Kuzzy if that woudl have made a difference to her ranking also.
I'm shocked Golovin madeit, can't stand her style of play, nro myskina.

I'm slightly surprised by this....... although, i know nothing about WTA players really.....
Safin for men's number 1 :P
Pebs - August 7, 2007 12:11 PM (GMT)
girlies, schmirlies.... very nice and well done to MrI for putting it altogether - I loved the commentary, but time to stop being a tease and give us the men!
please....
:D
MrInvisible - August 7, 2007 12:13 PM (GMT)
And now for the men...**drum roll**
In 20th place, its...
Thomas Johansson - not a great year by his standards, but the Swede evidently has some fans out there...
In 19th, we have...
Gustavo Kuerten - well, he's not officially retired, but hardly seems to play these days - a huge favourite at Roland Garros, and a legend on the clay, with that gorgeous single-handed backhand...
At 18, its...
Nikolay Davydenko - in the news at the moment, for all the wrong reasons, but as of now, has not been found quilty of wrongdoing, the Russian is underrated, but still, appreciated by a few fans out there...
MrInvisible - August 7, 2007 12:16 PM (GMT)
At 16th, we have two players...
Fabrice Santoro...one of a kind, truly unconventional style of tennis, very talented, and a brilliant doubles player, will be sadly missed when he retires from singles (which he'll hopefully postpone til at least end of next year)...
Juan Carlos Ferrero...his 2002/3 heyday seems a long time ago, but this former King of Clay os still a class act, ironically appears to be at this best on faster surfaces these days...
Next up, lets see which two players are both 14th...

:lmaao:
me too - liven up my afternoon somewhat....
MrInvisible - August 7, 2007 12:24 PM (GMT)
At 14th, we have...
James Blake...probably a little lower than I'd have expected, which is possibly related to the fact that he's not been in such great form since the start of the year - great to watch when he's on form, and one of tennis's nice guys...
and...
Carlos Moya...Carlos has had a great year so far, won comfortably in Croatia the other week, and played his part in a great 1st round match vs Henman at Wimbledon,
then at joint 12th we have...
Berdych...Moody, inconsistent, but sometimes brilliant, Berdych comes across as a younger Safin. Devastating when playing well, his unpredictability may be part of his appeal...
and...
Nalbandian...Disliked by a few on this board, and having a bad year, this is a pretty good result for the lazy yet talented Argentinian - when he's in the mood for tennis he has a great strategic game (love the dropshots)...
Next, we'll find out who's in the top 10!
Dinky Jo - August 7, 2007 12:27 PM (GMT)
Nalbandian????
good to see Moya in there though......
MrInvisible - August 7, 2007 12:32 PM (GMT)
At joint 10th place, we have...
...Andy Roddick...his boom-bang one-dimensional tennis isn't always great to watch, but A-Rod is great value for quotes in post-match interviews - he also has an endearing vulnerability when losing to more talented players (Federer, Gasquet, etc)...
...Dmitry Tursunov...Dmitry is pure evil, always beating Henman, but his blogs are hilarious, and the ladies like him in a 'bad guy' kind of way...
In 9th place, beating his countryman by one place, its...
...Mikhael Youhzny...Great attacking game, and a good single-handed backhand, Youhzny is entertaining to watch - will there be any other Russians further on in this list I wonder...?
MrInvisible - August 7, 2007 12:38 PM (GMT)
At number 8, its Marcos Baghdatis....
Can anyone dislike this guy? Good to watch, with a fantastic attitude, he always seems to have a smile on his face - a crowd favourite for years to come, and his matches are often v good to watch...
At joint 6th its...
...Tim Henman...Some will say he's polled too high on this, some will say too low, but I think this is just about right. Showed us all at Wimbledon this year why we all found him so great, yet so frustrating to watch. Matches still potentially full of drama, and brave attacking net-play...
and..
...Rafael Nadal...this will be a controversy for a few, he got plenty of votes, but not enough of you loved him enough to get him in your top 3 or so. Arguably should have polled higher in this given his heroics at Wimbledon this year(indeed, I felt guilty for not having him in my top 10, but ah well!)...
Now, for the top 5!!!
Dinky Jo - August 7, 2007 12:40 PM (GMT)
aww....so many of my fave players in the top 10 :yahoo:
9mmSuzi - August 7, 2007 12:43 PM (GMT)
 Fed has just got to be no 1 if its Safin... i'll throw a temper tantrum !
MrInvisible - August 7, 2007 12:43 PM (GMT)
At 5, its...
Andy Murray...he's been out injured for 3 months, but before then had been having a great year. More of a 'in-yer-face' attitude than Henman, but with a clever tactical game, Murray is an interesting player, popular with most Brits, and a few others too - Murray will no doubt be proud to have beaten Henman in this little poll!
At 4, its...
Marat Safin...not having a great year, but Marat is a well loved character, capable of brilliant tennis when on song. Popular amongst the ladies, and often can be relied upon for a good quote...
Next, its the 3rd and 2nd places...
Pebs - August 7, 2007 12:47 PM (GMT)
aaaahhh, forgot bout Baggy, I like him - nice to see him in top ten
MrInvisible - August 7, 2007 12:51 PM (GMT)
Well, 3rd and 2nd were neck and neck...very very close indeed...
3rd place...its...
Novak Djokovic...Matching his ATP ranking of 3rd place, Djokovic is popular for his attacking tennis, hilarious impressions and stubborn mentality in matches - he'll be gutted though to have lost out on
2nd place to...
Richard Gasquet...Benefiting no doubt from his exhilirating 5 set win over Roddick at Wimbledon, Gasquet has the talent and flair which leaves many fans drooling. Still seen as a bit of an underachiever, Gasquet's flashes of brilliance make him a big attraction at tournaments.
now I wonder who's in 1st place...
A shock here, but its Roger Federer, a 40 point lead over 2nd place in this contest, the Swiss maestro, despite being world number 1 for so long, remains extremely popular, and topped most peoples' lists in this poll. Well done Federer, yet another crown you have won!
And thanks for voting, and all your patience with this...

:P You must be able to control your anger, not throw a racquet at me whenever you feel like it......
And you must have the the results to show for it.... the hardware must be genuine and plenty........
I am not such a hard person to please :halo:
So FEd is the hero  , Safin is a side order when Agassi is unavailable
Dinky Jo - August 7, 2007 01:03 PM (GMT)
Not a shock about Fed - but Gasquet 2nd and Nadal relagated to 6th  scandalous..... :P
MrInvisible - August 7, 2007 01:05 PM (GMT)
Yes, I was surprised the die-hard Nadal fans didn't find the thread...I was expecting him to pick up a few top placings...
Will be interesting to do this again at end of the year, to see what changes if any, there are...

It's a pity this poll didn't have more voters. I think you should do it again, preferably during a big tourney (YEC). More posters will be active by then.

Great top 3  Nice to see no Nadal in there and some French flair instead (ducks to avoud backlash form Nadal fans).
Speaking of which I woudl have gone for Mahut, Grosjean and Santoro - all great players to watch. :D
Speakign fo Gasquet, I remember saying on the BBC that he was great when he was 'onf ire' as in on his game. Apostate said that Gasquet was crap, he said he would not catch fire even if doused in petrol and set light to. How wrogn he was! roflmao
MrInvisible - August 7, 2007 01:54 PM (GMT)
SB, yes, I remember that Apostate quote - Gasquet certainly caught fire against Roddick at Wimbledon.
I think the best time to do this again is at end of the year - I did it on here deliberately at a quiet time as there was a bit of a lull on here after Wimbledon and I thought I'd try and perk things up with a fun popularity poll of players.
Dinky Jo - August 7, 2007 01:58 PM (GMT)
it'll be an interesting thing to keep a record of actually - see if there;s any events or controversies that change people's views over the next 6 months or so.
Big Al - August 7, 2007 09:17 PM (GMT)
Interesting results ! A summary list of them all would be useful to compare with our own choices :)

I agree :ok:
Thanks for doing this though - sorry I forgot to join in
Glad you remember the quote - i was wondering if I had imagined it. It was so silly that it should be limited to the imagination :D And yes he did catch fire against Roddick indeed, that was my match fo the tournie that. Absolutely fabulous match and great to see Gasquet come alive and show what he i scapable of.
Btw Federer says Gasquet is his favourite player so him coming second is no bad thing :ok:
Was Gonzalez mentioned? He is popular but maybe his not so great year as the last made th eresult sdifferent. You are right to time this at a later date.
