"They're disturbed by our being there. They've tried everything they could to tame us, to recuperate us and when they couldn't, they said I was a mad man...If I was in (Serena and Venus') place, I would take a break for one or two years. I would do some sailing, some ice skating, and I would come back unranked, just so I could become No. 1 within five or six months." -- Richard "It's a Black Thing" Williams.

Richard Williams and his faith in his girls never ever experienced doubt. The above comments seemed arrogant at the time but now for the second time they have made the WTA look like a joke at 2 of the worlds biggest stages yet again. If they were to actually focus, does anyone think that Richard with the above statement maybe loony or can it happen?

There is one person to stop that happening, and she is the only person to have beaten Serena in Grand Slam Tournaments this year......... Justine Henin.

If Justine wasn't about then it would be very possible in my opinion but they would have to play a lot of tounaments in those 5-6 months!

I'ld take anything Richard Williams says with a pinch of salt, he's artificially trying to construct a view that it's the world against the Williams sisters and it just isn't like that-he always sounds a few eggs short of an omelette to me.
I agree with the near consensus that Justine and the Williams are the main threats in any grandslam and the three best players on their day.
However i doubt the williams' can bet back to one and two in the world again their far too injury prone, and inconsistent.-but i wouldn't rule it out altogether.

Its sad that injury really ruined them but its amazing that they can still pull off the big wins that they do given the state thier health is always in.Its gonna be interesting now that Davenport is coming back so this should add a great mix to the proceedings!

I really like Davernport, she's one of my all time faves, but it's a hell of a long time since she won a slam-and i have my doubts about her mentally, but i'm still really glad she's back.

Dark_Necrofear - August 10, 2007 02:50 PM (GMT)
You have no idea how happy I am that she is back. That top 10 needs her and both williams girls. She is definetly going to add some intrigue to the WTA!

DN, I'd like to ask you a question please.

We all know Vee and Ree are fantastic athletes (wow that was hard for me to say :P  ). No, all jokes aside, how come they get injured so often? In all reality they don't play as much as some of the other girls do, so why do they get injured so much?

Surely with Venus & Serena a lot of it is to do with just how they play the game.

When you hit as hard as they do you are surely more prone to injury because of the strain you put on your body.

Justine is also more prone to injury than the average player despite having a smaller schedule and I would have thought for similar reasons - she strains her body to the limit.

Yeah that's what I think too. They all three put a lot of pressure on themselves physically in different ways.

Also, I think all three are naturally fragile in their own way. I think with Serena it confuses a lot of people as she doesn't look like a fragile woman. But physically and genetically both Venus and Serena are very injury prone, simple as. Also Justine is more susceptible to illness than the average person I think. She can get "run-down," I get coldsores when Im run down and I think the fact that Justine suffers with coldsores is evidence of her delicate constitution.

Thanks GS2 and SW19. :ok:

That is definitely true with Justine regarding the cold sores. :( Whenever she has played a lot of matches I always look to see if she has a cold sore ... if she has, then I know she's gonna lose either that match or the next one! It truly does show that she's absolutely spent and that she's fatigued. On another board they know that whenever I see a cold sore I start to get  and worried about her game.

As regards to V & S, it doesn't surprise me. Their games are so physical that it must wear them out.

Richard Wililiams - an egg short of an omelette! roflmao he sure is, or one brick shor tof a load as I would say. He's so annoying and brazen, I know he's doen marvellously well to get 'his firls' where they are today but I don't care - he comes accross as mannerless, full of crap and he thinks he is something alright. I find him dodgy tbh. And yes he does ham up this 'world against the Willaimses" crap too much - I'd liek to knwo why he does that and thinks that, or is it all spin b*llocks? I suspect the latter. How the world is against two sisters with more money than they knwo what to do with and huge success on and off the court with every door open to them and everyone wanting a piece fo them is beyond me. I wish the world were against me if that si what it entailed!

Hey QJ...I have to ech GS2's words and agree its how they play the game.Venus is much more athletic than Serena and faster add to that her power and thats why she gets injured.Serena is however heavier than Venus but is also quite fast add her power to that and its bound to hurt somewhere at sometime.Though I seem to think every now and then Serena likes to be a Prima Donna whereas Venus is genuinely injured!
