| the scream (not edvard munch) by dubitoergosum 30 July 2007 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- during wimbledon, masochistically watching the pimpled amoeba-rapova against the second rated screamer venus, my lady friend's niece ( 7 years old), barged in the living room screaming "animal planet animal planet, what's it all about, hyenas?" it turned out she, hearing the exchange of well known illegal, top of the lungs, screams of the "beautiful" tennis players mentioned, swore she was convinced that it was all about hyenas on the animal planet channel. i told her that's just pornographic tennis (found on an earlier thread here, thanks)and when she asked what's "pokograkic" i said i'll explained when she'll be 20 years old ( fat chance..by then...she'll know). i've played tennis for a lifetime, i know that the scream (unlike grunt) besides being distracting, is hindering the opponent by robbing him(her) of critical information about the hitting of the ball; the brain pretty much instantaneuosly will realize if it's a slice, topspin, flat and react accordingly.(see navratilova's opinion about this matter, arguably, the best female tennis player ever, i think she was, although she was not a favoured of mine). putting up with the screams is torturous and for the einsteins out there who just discovered the mute button, the ah-oh of the spectators, the ball hitting the raq etc is part of the pleasant experience of watching tennis and enjoying a cold beer. it's unfortunate that (including quite a few of tennis fans i know) we cannot enjoy watching women tennis anymore. and to make it clear, there is a huge difference between grunt and scream, about 50 db (decibels) measured on the courts.i'm wondering, hoping that's not only one (me) who cannot stand the animalic screams of a few players (and, likely, more in the near future if nothing will be done about it),if it is anything we, tennis fans, can do about it? (besides posting ) thanks |

| If you watch Sharapova or Venus Williams the intensity and noise of their screaming changes during the course of the match. On key points Williams' scream is so exaggerated that it is almost still going when the other player is hitting. You may be right about how hard they hit it, but as far as precision is concerned you must be absolutely joking mate, the unforced error count in the average WTA match is frequently scandalous |
