Title: Top 5 doubles combos

MissSospanFach - July 20, 2007 10:23 AM (GMT)
Given the doubles fanatic that I am, I thought I'd start another thread- who have been your favourite double partnerships? I know this is under the ATP section but to be fair to the women, why don't we do two separate lists?

Now I'm going on the combos I can remember so they won't necessarily be a true reflection of doubles in the open era (e.g. no Newcombe and Roche!) ! :D

ATP

1. The Woodies.
2. Mac/ Fleming (not born then but still!)
3. Bryans
4. Bjorkman/Woodbridge.
5.Knowles/Nestor

WTA

1. Raymond/Stubbs
2. Suarez/Pascual.
3. Navratliova/Shriver
4. Black/Huber
5.Sugiyama/Clijsters.

(admittedly McEnroe/Fleming and Navratilova/Shriver deserve higher rankings but I can only vaguely remember them playing, hence number 2/3!).

gigi fernandez/natasha zvereva :ok: :ok:

Navratilova and Shriver were probably the best doubles team of all time, along with Brough/Dupont and Casals and King.

Also Fernandez and Zvereva were an excellent team. Suarez and pascal have been the best 21st century team so far......

The flaw with the above list is that Fernadez and Zvereva are omitted and how on earth could you leave out Sanchez-Vicario and Novotna? Before their fall out they were phenominal and ranked world number 1.They constantly gave Gigi and double bagel princess Zvereva hell! Suarez and Pascual took moonballing to the next level in doubles.

And lets not forget Venus and Serena :D In Grand Slam doubles their success has been phenomenal, they have a 53-5 record in Grand Slam doubles and also have the Career Golden Slam, the only team to do so I believe!

On a sidenote, along with Martina Hingis, Serena is the only player since Martina Navratilova do acheive "the Double" at so many slams. I.e. winning the Singles and Doubles Championship, she did this at the 1999 US Open, 2002 Wimbledon, 2003 Australian Open. I know it's not really related but I just like bragging to be honest

My top 5 combos would be:

1: Navratilova and Shriver
2: Brough and Dupont
3: Fernandez and Zvereva
4: King and Casals
5: Williams and Williams

There are obviously many all time great doubles players such as Maria Bueno, Margaret Court and Martina Hingis who had a few prolific partners rather than one major who they dominated with.

Does anyone know anymore about the men?

Has anyone had more success as a pairing than the Woodies, I just checked and they won 11 GSs together. What about Rosewell, I know he won a lot, who was his partner?

dl04 - July 20, 2007 04:03 PM (GMT)
Hoad/Rosewall was a fantastic pairing. won a few Slams i believe......

Obviously Flemming/Mcenroe was incredibly dominant in the late 70's and early 80's.......

One of the most prolific partnerships i can think of apart from the woodies is Newcombe/Roche, won 5 Wimby's and many other Slam titles. I think it was 5 so you can question that if you know different.

Lol, yes I know the list is flawed, like I said, I only listed those doubles players that I have watched or have seen re-runs of and enjoyed watching.

If I was listing the best of all time then obviously I'd do more research!

Nice to see everyone talking doubles though :)

As a Dutchman I have to include Paul Haarhuis and Jacco Eltingh.

And of course I have to mention Tom Okker because of his great number of doubles titles.

Good point and it was nice to see them do well in the senior event this year!

My Mum still gets excited when she sees them! I wonder if I'll be the same with today's top tennis players are in their 60s?!

SerenaW19 - July 20, 2007 08:32 PM (GMT)
I should expect so... I like Newk, he really has a aura about him I feel, not really mad on Roche though....

Dark_Necrofear - July 21, 2007 06:52 AM (GMT)
In terms of Men another team springs to mind,Bob Hewitt and Frew Macmillan. They were sensational too.

TennisMenace - July 23, 2007 01:07 AM (GMT)
Ken Flach and Robert Seguso were great.
Rick Leach and Jim Pugh. Anders Jarryd and Joachim Nystrom.
Bhupati and Paes were pretty formidable as well - I'm a big fan of the players that excel at doubles without really making waves as singles players at all.
For entertainment, Ile Nastase and Jimmy Connors would be hard to beat....

SuperBRAT - July 29, 2007 03:39 PM (GMT)
Men: Mac and Flemming, Woodbridge and Woodforde.
Women: Nav and Shriver, King and Casals.

Hingis has to be in there as she has wona a doubles GS but changed her partners a bit so nto sure who I'd put her with.

I remember McNamara dn McNamee as a kid, not sure hwo much they won but they were big.

ah SB I was about to mention Macnamee and Macnamara...like you not sure how much they won, but they seemed to feature heavily at Wimbledon if my memory serves me well and were big faves of mine as so often entertaining. Once they played Fleming and Mac...An umpires nightmare with all those Mac's on court. roflmao

What about Brian Godfried and Raul Ramerez as I seem to remember them well at Wimbledon.
