Title: Bitchy Tennis Quotes
Description: Who has been the best?
chokapova - July 19, 2007 04:27 PM (GMT)
Thought this would get a bit of discussion going! :P
Here's a few for starters:
When US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, ranked fifth in the world, was asked who was the most popular Russian player, she said:
"Sharapova, of course, but I don't know if you would call her Russian, though.
"She is more American than Russian. She speaks Russian with a coarse accent." roflmao
Graf played in her first professional tournament in October 1982 at Stuttgart, Germany. She lost her first round match 6-4, 6-0 to Tracy Austin, a two-time U.S. Open champion and former World No. 1 player. Austin remarked of the then-thirteen year old Graf that
"there are hundreds of girls like her in America."
Twelve years later, Graf defeated Austin 6-0, 6-0 during a second round match in Indian Wells, California, roflmao which was their second and last match against each other.
Tracey!

At the peak of the Williams sisters and Hingis' competitive and fierce rivalry, Hingis stated in a press conference during the 1999 U.S. Open referring to the sisters' remarks,
"They always have big mouths. They always talk a lot. It's happened before, so it's gonna happen again. I don't really worry about that'
You can always count on Marti for a controversial quote! roflmao
chokapova - July 19, 2007 04:30 PM (GMT)
And over to Serena:
On Martina Hingis saying "they always have a big mouth" after her father Richard predicted an all-Williams 1999 US Open final:
"She's always been the type of person that -- she says things, just speaks her mind. I guess it has a little bit to do with not having a formal education."
Classic! :D

The best Austin one is one of her at the end of Steffi's career saying (paraphrased) "I knew back then (the 80's) she would be big, a killer forehand and legs like an antelope (well there was some sort of analogy)
Tracy "selective memory" Austin roflmao
Some great recent ones from the sisters
Prior to Wimbledon, when Venus was told that she was placed only sixth in the list of favourites to win the title, she said, “that’s okay, because, if I would have listened to everyone else, then I would have never made it out of Compton, so I’m living in Palm Beach Gardens now — it’s pretty nice.”
Serena when asked if Mauresmo in the quarters was a difficult draw: "For her it is."
Again: "My career is more Stellar than Stitches so he can say what he pleases"
Serena discussing the laying of a new surface at the Australian Open for 2008: "To be honest with you, I grew up in the hood, and any court is a good court to me." Okay the last one isn't bitchy, but it's so funny I had to include it
chokapova - July 19, 2007 05:51 PM (GMT)
I think the bottom line is you can always rely on Martina and Serena for great funny and/or bitchy quotes! roflmao
chokapova - July 19, 2007 05:53 PM (GMT)
Hingis breezed past Lisa Raymond rather too easily for her own liking
"I don't think I was totally tested today. It's hard to say something after 6-2 6-2 against Lisa Raymond."
:lmaao:
chokapova - July 19, 2007 05:55 PM (GMT)
Anna Kournikova rants, "I'm not Venus Williams. I'm not Serena Williams. I'm feminine. I'm not masculine like they are." :yikes:
chokapova - July 19, 2007 06:01 PM (GMT)
During a coin toss once, Hingis tweaked Davenport by saying, " Do you want me to serve or break you? ''
Another Hingis classic:
"I wish he had broken both hands" - after Marc Rosset lost the Swiss team the Hopman Cup when he punched an advertising board.

It was a very solid performance, I almost felt sorry for her."
-- Martina Hingis after dropping only four games at the French Open against Zuzana Ondraskova.
chokapova - July 19, 2007 06:05 PM (GMT)
"She's as mean as a snake. She reminds me of me."
-- Martina Hingis on Maria Sharapova.
"Playing (Serena) it always felt like playing a steamroller. No subtlety, no finesse, just raw, loud power. To respect this style of play was always a bit tough for me, but of course I had to, because the rules of tennis don't state that having a beautiful game is required to become No. 1."
-- Martina Hingis speaking to the German magazine Matchball on facing Serena Williams.
"Chris Evert was my mentor (provided by the WTA Tour) when I turned pro. The main thing I asked her was, 'How do you handle men?'"
-- Martina Hingis.

I guess we have to add Hingis' comment about Mauresmo being "half man".
All these Hingis comments, I sense a pattern coming on...

She also stated the fact that Amelie Mauresmo dominated tennis last year was a sign of how far things had slid on the WTA.
But she has learnt some humility at least since the days where she has had to endure being bagelled by Patty and Mirza.
She said of Serena "Im not the kind of player that can come out of nowhere and blow everyone away like Serena Williams"
And not a bitchy comment, but along those lines the tour gossip was that she was left sobbing for hours after her 63 62 thrashing by Serena at the Open in 2001 roflmao
And after her 60 64 at Miami the next year she actually had no words at the press conference I believe, such was her humiliation
Also, I heard that someone said of Kournikova's serve at WTT this year (or last maybe, I forget) that you don't often face serves that weak unless you're in the under 10's in women's tennis these days!

Interesting topic guys,, keep it up..
Another couple:
1) Matrina calling Sveta "the terminator".
2) At Wimbledon after the 4th round match: Serena beats Daniela.
Question: How would you feel if you would have gone out and lost to a woman who was playing on one leg?
SERENA WILLIAMS: If she was Serena Williams, I wouldn't feel that bad (smiling).
Well, it is not really bitchy, but shows how confident Serena is.
Dark_Necrofear - July 20, 2007 02:26 PM (GMT)
You know the comments gotta go to Hingis.I use to hate her in her early years because of the comments but she was and I say this honestly not good at commanding the English medium so some of it came across quite blunt and frank but other times she meant what she said.
One of her lines before 1999 French Open Final was Graf is too old now she wont win another slam. Evidently Hingis lost that final in the most embarssing way possible.Graf then got to the finals of Wimbers and Hingis lost 1st round to a girl who doesnt have a country now!

I also cant remember who Serena was talking about but she said "she is someone you just beat to get to the next round" that line made me cry!

An excerpt from 'Venus Envy':
Lindsay stands nearly 6'3". She has won three Grand Slams over the past three years (only Venus Williams has won as many in the same amount of time) and is the best American player since Chris Evert. Her opinion of Anna? "A circus act." The Williams sisters? "At least Serena can bring herself to say 'hi.' Venus can't -- or won't -- even speak. Venus likes to give the impression that she's so great, that she's 'Da Bomb' or whatever. She can say it all she wants, but that just means she doesn't have it."

Myskina on Jankovic after their 2006 Wimbledon match:
Q. You had a tough match with Jankovic last year. What was the difference today?
ANASTASIA MYSKINA: Well, she's a really strange player. Let's put it that way. She walk on the court. I don't think she really care about the way she play. She more care about how she look. That was kind of strange, you know. She was more touching her hair, whatever, skirt. I was just thinking, If you don't want to play tennis, why are we even trying here hard?
Q. Was it distracting?
ANASTASIA MYSKINA: A little bit, you know. She took her towel here, she took a towel there. She's like, you know, it's really annoying, let's say. But, well, she can play. She can play really well. But she's like up and down all the time.
 roflmao

Irina Spirlea after 'the bump':
Q. Can you tell us about the collision at the changeover chair at 4-3 in the second set? What was that all about?
IRINA SPIRLEA: I'm not going to move. I mean, she's never trying to turn or whatever. She thinks she's the f*cking Venus Williams. She not going to turn. She just went like this. I was like, "I want to see if she's turning." She didn't, so.

Interviewer: Any comments on Serena's retirement from her match the other day?
Lindsay: I saw that match against Ruano-Pascual and it was a little fishy to me. She was moving well and then she just stopped. I don't think she was hurt at all. She was getting her ass kicked. I thought she was a complete wimp about it. I played her in mixed doubles the next day and she was diving for balls, so yeah...you do the math.

Lindsay had beaten Anna in straight sets at Amelia Island. Afterwards Kournikova complained that the wind made it hard to play well, and that Lindsay 'didn't really hit it that hard; other players like Pierce and Lucic hit it harder.
