Title: Is Roche Being Bitter?
Dark_Necrofear - July 18, 2007 11:38 AM (GMT)
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/tennis/6903966.stmIn the above article he clearly states that Hewitt can win a slam and get to the top of the world rankings. This I find all too hilarious due to the fact that apart from Federer and Nadal there is now a higher quality and breed of young guns that can maul Lleyton. Is Roche bitter aboute being sacked by Federer, who incidently went on to beat Nadal on clay, reach the French Open Final and win Wimbledon all without him?How dismissive is he being of the worlds top 2 players?

The way I read this, Darky, is that it looks like his sacking has affected his ego to some extend and seems more motivated than ever to prove his worth as a coach. Under Federer he probably did not have much to do and thought all was going well as Federer kept winning but his dismissal came as a surprise and an embarrassment.
At his age, he clearly would not like to coach anyone who is not a potential slam winner and Hewitt, though I agree with you is less promising than others, has shown in the past and even more recently, is a slam and a big occasion match player.

I don't think we should read too much into this. After all, this is a news article, and it is not at all clear what was said in the interview.
In any case, surely you would expect Roche to say that Hewitt has another slam in him, if he is about to coach him?

I disagree with that. I mean Roche wasnt willing to travel with Roger full time when he was asked and then resorted to the consultancy basis of his time with Federer but here he is willing to do just that for Lleyton. You cant tell me he is eager because Lleyton is of the same origin and homeland he is from and because he believes Lleyton can win a slam.I mean that alone would spell bitter and stupid!

I thought the main problem for Roche was that he and Roger would have difficulties with the travel full-time.
I mean Roche had to meet Roger in Dubai for practice,I believe Roger has a nice pad there.
The Advantage I would assume for Roche is he won't have to leave his family as much for Lleyton,as they would both obviously be able to train in Australia now.
Therefore Roche is free to perhaps travel more for big events.
As regards his bitterness,I would be suprised if he wasn't as being cast aside before the French was a blow for him.He only has to check his CV though and it reads well.Lendl,Rafter,Federer,Hewitt.
Somehow if there is any bad feeling,it will soon fade away.To be honest all coaches, even the big ones, will be unceremoniously dumped at some point. :D
