Title: "The Music Awards Thread"
Description: Brits, Grammys, Mercury etc

Scotsguy - February 15, 2007 12:33 AM (GMT)
So here's who won, and i put in brackets who i thought should win the award on any that i thought didnt go to the right person....

# British Male Solo Artist James Morrison (Paolo Nutini-Better voice, better songs, better lyrics)
# British Female Solo Artist Amy Winehouse (Lily Allen all the way)
# British Group Arctic Monkeys (Them, Razorlight or Snow Patrol I wasnt fussed as long as it wasnt Kasabian or Muse)
# MasterCard British Album Arctic Monkeys“Whatever people say I am, that’s what I’m not” (This or Lily Allen or Amy winehouse all are good)
# British Single Take That “Patience” (Razorlight-America) I fact anything but the song that won....
# British Breakthrough Act Fratellis (gd result wouldn't have minded the Kooks)
# British Live Act Muse (ugh....)
# International Male Solo Artist Justin Timberlake
# International Female Solo Artist Nelly Furtado
# International Group The Killers (Great Result)
# International Album Killers “Sam’s Town” (See above)
# International Breakthrough Act Orson (I reckon Ray Lamontagne's better
# Outstanding Contribution to Music Oasis

Any thoughts?

The Dav - February 15, 2007 12:54 AM (GMT)
Great results, I actually like all of those winners, except maybe Orson and although I'm not a huge fan of 'Patience', what other British singles were good

Especially happy for The Killers, The Fratellis, Amy and Nelly :D

liam_valid - February 15, 2007 01:12 AM (GMT)
Im so happy Patience won best single, if only to pile more misery on Robbie Williams  I was hoping Beyonce would win International Female, but Furtados acceptance speech was so good im glad she won!!! I also think Winehouse was a worthy winner of British Female, although she obviously NEVER prepared a speech!!!

SuperBRAT - February 15, 2007 09:39 AM (GMT)
My thoughts - firstly, who the hell decided to put Russel Brand on there? he was cringeworthy and inapproprite with many of his jokes - he was 200 times worse than I ever imagined.

Fantastic for Amy Winehouse, what an awesome talent, the real deal.   Felt sorry for Lilly Allen and Corrine Baliey Ray though, I think the Brit females were strong this year.

James Morrison has a great voice but not very exciting.

British Single - I really like Take That's new stuff and it was better than most nominees. Nice blokes, they really are and good luck to 'em after all the crap they've had. Bet Robbie was pig sick watching them. My fave was The Feeling though, nice cheery pop tune.

I was expecting Lilly Allen to get something, she should have had British Breakthrough. She's not the greatest artist ever but she's fun and listenable.

International Acts - Gnarls Berkley were robbed somwhere. Orson's No Tomorrow is great but the rest of this stuff I've heard is confused crap. I don't like the Killers, I've heard all that stuff 20 years ago done better by Brits too. They do it well, just not my thing. I expected them to win something. Justine Timberlake? Give me a frigging break! Jack Johnson is much better. :)

Groups - quite a dssappointing lot to pick from. Lots of Indie type stuff, but it's all so unoriginal and 80s sounding, I prefer Indie from way back when it had spark and balls. Dont; knwo much about the Arctics, but they seem mad as hatters!,The other choices were rather dull to say the least. In fact all the groups were shown up by the stars of the show ... ......

OASIS - well done, these boys can still rock. I can see why they've had more sucess than the likes of the modern lot - personality, attitude and great songwriting. What music should be about.

GS2 - February 15, 2007 10:34 AM (GMT)
British male was very weak this year (weaker than British female which is very unusual) James Morrison is ok though will be completely forgotten a few years down the line. Javris Cocker should have won this.

British Female - Yes they got this right though it was a strong field with the exception of Nerina Pallot

Best Album - The Artic Monkeys album was overhyped but is still decent. I wouldn't have minded any of these though would have probably gone for Amy (no British solo men were nominated in this category which is telling). Razorlight should have been nominated.

British Groups - Inevitable that the Monkey's would win this - fair enough they had a great year. Kasabian were the weak link on the short list.

British Breakthrough - Should have probably gone to Lily Allen but The Fratellis are fine.

International Breakthrough - This is a joke right!? Orson are just plain terrible. Gnarls or the Raconteurs should have won.

British Single - No surprise the ITV audience voted for Take That but the Feeling or Razorlight should have won.

International Male - Rubbish field, couldn't care less about any of them. Beck and Dylan hardly did their best work last year and the other nominations are a joke.

International Female - Cat Power should clearly have won but isn't mainstream enough. Furtado is no better or worse than any of the other nominations.

International Group - Everyone else deserved this more than the Killers.

International album - Same here - with the exception of Timberlake.

9mmSuzi - February 15, 2007 10:43 AM (GMT)
I really do love amy winehouse( she has spunk) and I was glad she was deservedly rewarded..... but i agree with you SB.. Corinne is pretty close...I just like their smoky jazzy like tunes....

Lilly is fine...a bit too tongue in cheek...but That what makes her sell..so I respect that....

The rest ..yeah...whateva ish..... but the arctic monkeys are easy to listen to for luck of a better description...

Scotsguy - February 15, 2007 10:44 AM (GMT)
How can you say that the Killers didnt deserve their awards. 2 years ago they were robbed by the scissor sisters who in comparison to the killers are rubbish/ The Killers new album is incredible, they definetly deserved both awards.

It was a shame Lily didn't won anything, at least Corrinne didnt nwin anything-she's so bland and her performance last night was dull dull dull... I'm glad the Fratellis won breakthrough tho as their isnt a bad song on their album. But best british band what was with the nominees??? Muse and Kasabian- I can't stand either of them, Razorlight perhaps deserved this more thsn the monkeys(who have been missing for the last 6-7 months) Also James Morrison sure he's decent but he isnt any better than James Blunt, and Paolo Nutini's album was sooooo much better....

Also Justin Timberlake did deserve his award, Beck was too far from mainstream to win, JAck Johnson hasnt ndone all that much his year, whereas Justin's had a No.1 album.....

Nelly or Christina for the best female, Beyonce's rubbish in comparison....

GS2 - February 15, 2007 10:54 AM (GMT)
Everything the Killers have done has been done a thousand times better many times before mainly by British bands.

I'm a seriously keen music lover and I couldn't tell you the name of any Killers song because they are so bland and lacking in originality.

Thankfully they've only got another year or two left before people move onto something new.

Scotsguy - February 15, 2007 10:57 AM (GMT)
Have you heard their new album???

It's one of the most american albums around....sure their first album was britpop but the new one is a completely different direction and i cant imagine many british bands doing anything similar....

GS2 - February 15, 2007 11:01 AM (GMT)
Heard it - thought it was average it best.

They are really nothing special.

That's EXACTLY how I see it GS2. When I heard about the Killers they sounded exciting. When I heard their music I was just bored. It's rather dull and lacks attitude, soul and edge. I also find a rather tuneless and a racket. Not that i like quiet music as was suggested whne I said this once - I mean I was into punk for God's sake, but it does nowt for me.

I can see why the youngsters woudl like them - they would not have heard that stuff first time around and done better, so I appreciate that and am not knocking their fans just expressing my opinion. I dont; diss all modern bands going retro indie/punk - Kaiser Chiefs are very heavily retro, but I think they are really good at it and they have a spark so I like them. They also do a catchy tune and some good lyrics.

I would agree there SB - I'm not the biggest fan but I do quite like the Kaiser Chiefs for the bit of spark & life they have - liking the new single for that very reason.

For me the Killers are just very dull. No life to them at all.

They are obviously very popular and so must do something for a lot of people but i'm just not one of them!

Yeah that new Kaiser's song is growing on me. Not their best but it's better than Killers.

Scotsguy - February 15, 2007 11:31 AM (GMT)
Yeah I cant wait for the new Kasier Chiefs album, emploment was awsome. They were the big success at the brits last year winning 3 awards and I can see them doing well next year if the album is a success....

GS2 - February 15, 2007 11:40 AM (GMT)
It's out in a week or so isn't it?

I think it's the same week as the new Arcade Fire which I'm really looking forward to hearing.

The new Joss Stone is out soon as well - it will be interesting to see if she's actually found some good songs to go with that voice this time!!

Then why are you begrudging them Best International Band/Album?

I don't know what album you heard GS :) But the one I have on my player is on constantly, they're fantastic, a bit derivative, but who cares, and hardly bland, they are arguably the most popular band in the world today, I agree with SG :ok:

And I highly doubt they'll be 'over' in two years, they totally changed their style for their second album, and if anything they're even bigger now :)

Sorry Dav, don't get your point.

Just coz they are more derivative of British bands than International bands doesn't mean they should get a best international award.

Anyway my main problem with them is how samey & lifeless their songs are. I just don't rate them as much as the other bands nominated.

Sorry just not a fan.

I only watched it for Russell Brand - the music - other than the Chillis - just made me wanna sleep. i do like some of Amy Winehouse's stuff, but i missed her performance :(

Btw, Pebs, i watched the live DVD of Russell Brand's stand up - have you been to see him yet? He's awfully rude - very funny - but definitely not for the faint-hearted!

Fair enough though, everyone has a different taste, but Mr. Brightside is already a classic, and songs like WYWY and Somebody Told Me are anything but bland, IMO :D

I'm kinda with you here Dav!

I've always been a big fan of the Chilli's but I must admit I've lost a bit of interest lately as they do seem to be redoing the same thing over and over again nowadays!

That double album they released last year was just too much of the same for me.

Sorry Jo! :D I know it's a really unpopular opinion to have, they seem to be universally loved, especially over here, but I just don't like them

Fair enough re Killers, at least you gave them a chance :)

Yeah, i do give most things a chance (except the likes of 50 Cent and Snoop Dog who I'd like to give a slap! roflmao ) but they just don't do anything for me. Mind you, they have done well to make caravans fashionable again - are the a 'p*key chic' band? roflmao

Yeah, I'm currently adapting the whole album to the tin whistle to play around the camp fire roflmao

Yeah, and judging how that lush Amy Winehouse is so popular, I'd say you'll be a big hit roflmao

I agree. I'm not a fan of dance really, nor most 'pop' but they should still have those categories because they are kind of crucial really. I noticed that a lot of the best single songs were very poppy - that might explain it.

They also dropped best Urban act...

Yeah i miss those awards, I also think the way they did best single was rubbish as it was always going to be Take That with a song that is so unoriginal that it must be breaking more copyright laws than GCSE coursework does......
