Lindsay Davenport returns to play in World TeamTennis Pro League for Sacramento Capitals on July 21
NEW YORK, N.Y.(June 27, 2007)– Lindsay Davenport returns to tennis action for the first time since giving birth earlier this month when she plays for the Sacramento Capitals of the World TeamTennis Pro League on Saturday, July 21.
Davenport, who has been off the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour since the end of 2006, and her husband Jon Leach became parents when their son Jagger was born on June 10. The July 21 match against Sacramento’s rival, the Newport Beach Breakers, will also be Davenport’s first WTT match since 2003 when she played for the Breakers.
The last time Davenport played for the Sacramento Capitals, the team captured the World TeamTennis championship. Nine years later, Davenport is returning to Sacramento on July 21 to help the Capitals in their drive for a record sixth League title.
Davenport made her WTT debut in 1993 with the Sacramento Capitals and helped the team to the League Championship in 1997 and 1998.
“We’re thrilled to have Lindsay back with the Caps,” said team owner Lonnie Nielson.“She’s a great champion and we’ve always considered her part of the Caps family.”
Davenport is a three-time Grand Slam singles champion who also won 51 career singles titles and 36 doubles titles on the WTA Tour. The former world No. 1 won the 2000 Australian Open, 1999 Wimbledon and the 1998 U.S. Open singles championships, along with the gold medal in singles at the 1996 Olympic Games.
The 2007 WTT regular season runs July 5-25 with the top two teams from both the Eastern and Western Conference advancing to the WTT Championship Weekend, July 27-29, in Roseville, Calif., home of the Capitals. The Capitals are in the Western Conference along with the Houston Wranglers, Kansas City Explorers, Newport Beach Breakers, St. Louis Aces and Springfield Lasers. Eastern Conference teams are Delaware Smash, New York Buzz, New York Sportimes and Philadelphia Freedoms.
Well, now, it's only one night and only doubles from what I've read elsewhere, but could Lindsay be testing the waters for a tour level comeback?
