MrInvisible - July 9, 2007 09:34 AM (GMT)
Right folks, a long list of categories...don't have to answer them all at once, and you can nominate more than one person/match,etc for each category. Here they are - they're for both mens' and women's, and there are some more general awards too:

Worst match

Most improved player
Most surprisingly good grasscourt player
Most disappointing player
Luckiest player

MissSospanFach - July 9, 2007 09:54 AM (GMT)
Here are some of my thoughts, I'll have to ponder the others!

Fairytale- Jamie Murray and Jankovic winning the mixed doubles!

Best match- Men's final. Henman vs Moya was also very entertaining.

Worst match- Not really sure. Serena Williams vs Sequera was only 44 mins long so I'll say that!

Most improved player- Nadal on grass.

Most disappointing player- 11th seed Robredo losing early. Mauresmo not capitalising on an improvement in form at Eastbourne.

Fashion faux pas- Kuznetsova's corn rows- no no no!

Best commentator- David Mercer.

Worst commentator- Barry Davies. Time to hang up the mic. In fairness he got better as the days went on, but his lack of knowledge about the players at the beginning (and at Queen's) was not good!

Best shot- THAT Nadal shot.

MrInvisible - July 9, 2007 09:56 AM (GMT)
Fairytale: Murray/Jankovic mixed doubles win. It had something of a fairytale feel to it, especially with all that flirting and giggling, and the fact that Jankovic didn't appear to have doubles much before. Also, Wayne Arthurs' run to 3rd round, beating Robredo along the way.

Hero/Heroine - Nadal heroically battled his way through the rain delays and a tough draw...and almost pulled it off. He won a lot of new fans over the tournament, even sceptics like me!
Villain - Wimbledon organisers - no play on the Middle Sunday, and then just to slavishly finish it all yesterday, they forced players to play their matches on consecutive days.
Best match - too many to choose - mens' final was great, Roddick v Gasquet was invigorating, Djokovic v Baghdatis a gruelling classic. Henman v Moya seems a lifetime ago. On the womens' side I really enjoyed an early match, Sugiyama v Cornet.
Worst match - Venus v Ivanovic was a bit of an anti-climax. Berdych v Nadal was another let-down.

Most improved player - Tipsarevic - looks a real solid top 20/25 player these days, and Nadal, closed the gap between him and Federer on grass. Bartoli too
Most surprisingly good grasscourt player - Bartoli! Nadal surprised a few again, and who would have thought Davydenko would have won 3 matches in a row on grass.
Most disappointing player - Nalbandian again. Mauresmo. And Berdych, who went out with a whimper.
Luckiest player - Federer, with his 5 days rest!
Unluckiest player - Djokovic and Gasquet. Djokovic had the toughest draw of anyone - Kiefer, Hewitt, then Baghdatis, wins all three matches, and was mentally ready to play a classic v Nadal, but his body couldn't take it any more. And poor Gasquet, plays the match of his life on Friday evening, yet has to play a singles semi-final 16 hours later!

Best quote - I liked Roddick's one about Federer 'doing the double-decker tourist bus thing' on his days off. Also, Nadal's unintentionally funny quote about Soderling pulling a 'not very nice face' at Nadal at end of match. Special mention also to Soderling mimicking Nadal - v funny, but may have ultimately cost Soderling the match!
Fashion faux pas - Kuznetsova's hair - sorry, just doesn't do it for me.
Best commentator - Connors was brilliant during the final. Marc Cox was v good, but seemingly relegated to minor doubles matches on outer courts on BBC interactive.
Worst commentator - I'm used to Andrew Castle, so he doesn't seem to annoy me as much these days. The BBC text commentary was v unfunny and irritating though.
Best shot - Angled backhand smash from Federer on a v big pressure point.

Drama-queen/whinger - Serena - absolutely no contest. That woman could throw a hissy fit in an empty room.

Also, two other awards I forgot...

Best youngster: Djokovic
Best 'oldie': Bjorkman

SaraLess - July 9, 2007 10:11 AM (GMT)
Fairytale: has to be Fed for equalling Borgs record...not a dry eye in the house!
Hero/Heroine: Marion adding a touch of magic to get to the finals!
Villain: Lopez for destroying the Henmania ;)
Best match: Henman vs Moya/Gasquet vs Roddick/ Nadal vs Federer
Worst match: Berdych vs. Nadal; disappointing from Berdych

Most improved player: Gasquet for finally putting his mark on latter stages of GS - Djoko for carrying on his march up the rankings
Most surprisingly good grasscourt player: Rafa! It's not surprising, as he's so brilliant, but thinking about his clay court dominance, he does take to grass very well
Most disappointing player: Berdych, again - wanted more from him
Luckiest player: A few had various touches of luck...need to think about this a bit more!
Unluckiest player: Poor old Novak having to limp off against Rafa...

Best quote: Rafito on Soderling: If I fall down, he says nothing. He touches his ass, grabs his pants, makes fun of me -- very unprofessional."
Fashion faux pas: Gasquets back to front cap, Serena and her leggings
Best commentator: Greg is moving up the charts for me
Worst commentator: ANDREW EFFING CASTLE!!!!
Best shot half volley forehand from Fed, when playing Safin...or...a couple of stinging Rafa backhands

Drama-queen/whinger Serena!

fah51 - July 9, 2007 11:16 AM (GMT)
Fairytale - Roger's fifth title :yahoo:
Hero/Heroine - Bartoli's run to the final
Villain - the weather
Best match - men's final, Moya v Henman for atmosphere (it was like being in a time warp )
Worst match - Berdych v Nadal

Most improved player - all the Serbs, including Tipsy
Most disappointing player - Hantuchova not capitalising on Serena's injury, Robredo losing to Arthurs
Luckiest player - probably Roger with Haas pulling out
Unluckiest player - Tursunov ("Why couldn't he retire during the match?")

Best quote - didn't hear many
Fashion faux pas - THOSE red knickers
Best commentator - only listened to Radio Wimbledon but I like all their commetators
Worst commentator - not exactly a commentator but Radio Wimby has Bolletieri as a pundit and he's really irritating because he always calls it "WimbleTon"
Best shot - Fed's forehand winners to break Nadal in the fifth set

Drama-queen/whinger - Serena

MrInvisible - July 9, 2007 11:55 AM (GMT)
Come on folks - lets get some more nominations in here...want lots and lots of votes here, and maybe even for award categories I've not mentioned!

SaraLess - July 9, 2007 11:57 AM (GMT)
Surely to counter the fashion faux pas, there should be a fashion statement?

Roger and his jacket, trousers and elegant bag!!

dl04 - July 9, 2007 12:56 PM (GMT)
Fairytale- Marion bartoli, what a run!

Tenez - July 9, 2007 01:07 PM (GMT)
Fairytale: Fed for equalling Borgs record...
Hero/Heroine: Marion adding a touch of magic to get to the finals!

Best match: Gasquet vs Roddick/ Nadal vs Federer
Worst match: Berdych vs. Nadal; disappointing from Berdych

Most improved player: Nadal no doubt. Gasquet was already "good" in my view
Most surprisingly good grasscourt player: Nadal again but let's keep in perspective that Slazengers balls (and maybe today's grass) make grass play more like clay rather grass. HC season will tell us more about it.
Most disappointing player: Berdych, however I believe the wind made it particularly difficult for him to be fair. Reading Nadal's spin is not easy but reading Nadal's spinned ball carried out by a gusty win is a bit of a nightmare for a flat hitter.
Luckiest player: Nadal, first Soderling decisive break thanks to an amazing reflex volley from Nadal but where the ball drop was entirely down to pure luck (the worst place it could have dropped for Sod. Then Youzhny starting to feel his back after a great display, then Dojoko. (he still showed his worth in the final though).

Unluckiest player: Youzhny

Best quote: ??
Fashion faux pas: Gasquets back to front cap (agreed)
Best commentator: David Mercer
Worst commentator: Becker

Most disappointing player: Safin
Luckiest player:  What goes around comes around
Unluckiest player: See above

Best quote: Any time michael stich tried to say 'Venus' (it comes out as Weeeenes ) Or any Murray/Jankovic Press confrence - "I haven't got the ring yet"
Fashion faux pas: Arnaut Clement
Best commentator: Johnny Mac
Worst commentator: John Lloyd
Best shot: That diving back hand volley from nadal plus a pirotte Vs Berdych (I think???)

Best commentator: McEnroe

Best shot: Federer's backhand smash

MissSospanFach - July 9, 2007 03:05 PM (GMT)
Best quote-

Journalist to Mauresmo- Are you disappointed or very disappointed at your loss?

timmadigan - July 9, 2007 03:26 PM (GMT)
Fairytale - Fed winning 5 in a row and Marion Bartoli reaching the finals through Jelena and Justine.

Hero/Heroine - Marion / Nadal

Villain - Venus for ruining Marion's fair ;). but seriously, the villians were the non-players: The weather, the Organizers and the US TV coverage (failed to show anything that didn't have a US player if it wasn't the semi's or finals for men's / women's - completely ignored Jamie/Jelena's mixed double's match).

Best match - Men's final; Henman vs Moya

Worst match - too many to call.

Most improved player - Marion -- who would have thought she'd make it through the 3rd round???

Most surprisingly good grasscourt player - I would say Rafael, but he made it to the final's last year, so it would be Marion.

Most disappointing player - Amelie and Roddick. Both should have done much better.

Luckiest player - Roger. 5 days off while everyone else had to wait it out in the locker room.

Unluckiest player - no one.

Best quote - best I saw was one of the Bryan's telling the umpire that everyone's watching the replay on TV and he's looking like an idiot for his missed call he wouldn't review.

Fashion faux pas - corn rows on a white girl. that's just wrong.

Best commentator - I had US television... there are no good commentators here (for the most part).

Worst commentator - see above ;)

Drama-queen/whinger - okay, i'll go with Serena on this. I know a calf cramp hurts like hell but 3 days later to be b*tching about it? It wasn't a tear or anything like it. At this point in your career, you 1) shouldn't be getting those types of cramps - it's poor pre-work, and 2) shouldn't whine over them.

Pebs - July 9, 2007 03:27 PM (GMT)
Fairytale: Oh, Fed surely? I could barely catch breath watching him reach that fifth grand slam and cried alongside everyone else! The Bartoli also had a bit of a dream Wimbledon and I certainly felt for her too

Hero/Heroine: My hero is Henman, just cause he battled and battled and it just wasnt too be

Villain: Lopez for destroying the Henmania (had to agree with Sara on this one!)

Best match: Henman vs Moya or the final - loved them both

Worst match: Nadal v Soderling - just cause it went on and on and on and on (not actually to do with the tennis though - hard to get into a match that is so on and off)

Most improved player: hmmm, didnt catch enough of every player to make the best judgement but I will go for Rafa as I think his movement on grass is even more assured than last year and his adjustment to it never fails to amaze me

Most surprisingly good grasscourt player: Well, Moya took me by surprise - isnt his forte supposed to be clay???

Most disappointing player: Safin - why oh why does he never last long enough for me to drool over him??

Luckiest player: Well, Fed got a nice stroll through at some stage didnt he, so thats rather nice for him!

Unluckiest player: anyone coming up against Venus - that woman was on fire this tournament!

Best quote: Rafa passing comment on his hard slog over five days while Roger gets a holiday!

Fashion faux pas: I had the misfortune to catch Serena in what looked like a pair of jimjam bottoms - they were NOT flattering...

Best commentator: Always Mac - none better :)

Worst commentator: some woman commentator - I never know their names, but whiny voice...

Best shot: any Henman made that worked a treat! Also, not a shot, but I loved the way Fed turned away from a ball being thrown yesterday and just hit it back without looking behind him - his awareness is phenomenal

Drama-queen/whinger: the little hissy fit of Feds over Hawkeye has to be worth a mention!

Dinky Jo - July 9, 2007 04:45 PM (GMT)
Fairytale: Gotta be Jankovic and Murray surely?

Hero/Heroine: Fed - he really had to fight for this one - good on him!!

Villain: I'm gonna follow the crowd and say the wimbledon organisers.

Best match: Baghdatis vs. Djoko - brilliant match, and much respect between the players

Worst match: Federer vs safin - such a let-down after all the hype. (I'd like to point out i didn't get to see many matches, and i'm basing this on the matches that i did see....)

Most improved player: rafa

Most surprisingly good grasscourt player: I think i agree with pebs - Moya played incredibly well and his serve/volley stats were pretty impressive.

Most disappointing player: Berdych - won halle this year and just didn't seem to turn up against nadal.

Luckiest player: Fed i guess....

Unluckiest player: Tursunov - bad timing for Haas to retire really.

Best quote: "Just won't let it go" - Jamie Murray after yet another journo asks him about jelena.

i have to say, this little sentence from the Observers TV critic made me laugh

QUOTE
Last week I'm sure there must have been some real-time tennis going on but I never seemed to have much luck finding it, and when I did it was invariably Rafael Nadal's Groundhog Day.

Fashion faux pas: dunno - but would someone PLEASE buy rafa a decent pair of pants, you know, ones that don;t get stuck up his a$$ all the time

Best commentator: jimmy conners was pretty good in the final i thought.

Worst commentator: johnny mac - if only 'cos i think it's in his contract that he has to say "you cannot be serious" at least once an hour....

Best shot: the one that nadal made yesterday while falling over was pretty good. And again, not a shot, but Safin catching the ball on his racquet was pretty impressive

Drama-queen/whinger: I think Fed's little moment of uncouth was quite amusing

fedrules - July 9, 2007 06:30 PM (GMT)

TeamJustine - July 9, 2007 06:54 PM (GMT)
QUOTE (fedrules @ Jul 9 2007, 12:30 PM)
Most disappointing player: Henin

To be brutaly honest the tennis that Justine played this Wimby was rather awe-inspiring apart from that one bad last set against Bartoli.

I watched all her other matches and her tennis was breath-taking - Yet it only took one bad set to put her out!

Yes it was disapointing because she was many people tip for the title and she didnt make that - but she still played beautiful tennis when she was there. Well for me anyways. :)

WimbledonAce - July 9, 2007 07:11 PM (GMT)
Fairytale : Murray and Jankovic, they are so cute together
Hero/Heroine : Nadal & Bartoli, extremely worthy runners up
Villain : Lopez for kicking out Tim. Nalbandian,Davydenko et al for their Wimbledon is boring malarkey. Andrew Jarret and team. Haasy for denying me watching him in the 4th round
Best match : Federer Nadal, couldn't have wished for a better final.
Worst match : Can't think of one. Maybe Feds v Safin was disappointing. And also the mens semis but not their fault.

Most improved player : Gasquet, Krajicek
Most surprisingly good grasscourt player : Rafa
Most disappointing player : Mauresmo
Luckiest player : Feds for his rest while everyone else had to hang around waiting to play
Unluckiest player : Rafa, Djokovic, Gasquet

Best quote : Janko & Murray, hilarious!
Fashion faux pas : The red pants (Golovin?)
Best commentator : Greg, Connors, McEnroe
Worst commentator : Virginia Wade - her voice goes right through me, she sounds constipated. Also Smith - borsville!!!!
Best shot : Gasquets backhand - superb. Any of Feds when he faced break points in 5th set.

Drama-queen/whinger : Serena, she should be on the stage. Lots of whingers but they had just cause.

Flame - July 9, 2007 07:24 PM (GMT)
Fairytale: tie between fed equaling borg and the mcjankovic saga.

Hero/Heroine: wayne arthurs for his gallant efforts. down and out in the qualis and came back. down 2 sets and a break down in round 1 and came back. turned over talented top tenner tommy robredo in round 2. it really was wayne's world.

Villain: serena williams. toilet-gate and press conference whinging. more to come.

Best match: for sentimental reasons tim v carlos. at one stage 2-4 15-40 down and comes back to win 13-11 in the 5th, saving break points with aces, brilliant. never shouted so much at the telly in my life. hoarse for day but worth it.

Worst match: berdy v nadal. berdy you clown. you hand bjorkman 2 bagels and then hand the match to rafa on a plate. what a tool.

Most improved player: Djokovic. could well have made the final if fully fit imo.

Most surprisingly good grasscourt player: bartoli, where did she come from?

Most disappointing player: they all tried their best out there, can't pick.

Luckiest player: lopez, you jammy git, mugging tim in 2 breakers, you have no right to a wimby win over him you ***££$$ ... sorry losing it.

Unluckiest player: daniela hantuchova, in a way she let herself down but if it hadn't been for the intervention of the rain she would have had serena williams.

Best quote: "you see... that's why you suck!" jonas bjorkman's tirade to the umpire. excellent stuff.

Fashion faux pas: kuzzy, you're a lovely girl and i do fancy you but bo derek you ain't. burn the hair extensions luv.

Best commentator: jimmy connors called the final perfectly. right before fed made the crucial break in the 5th he asked: "do you get the feeling that nadal has had his shot and now it's federers turn?"

spot on, jimmy.

Worst commentator: greg rusedski. not only talking nonsense at double pace in canadian but also a major participant in the not funny skits at the end of the highlights program. for shame!!

Best shot: nadal's impossible squash shot pass that killed robin soderling was amazing.

Drama-queen/whinger: serena williams. when michael stich accused her of being a drama queen her response was extraordinary and lamentable: "well he's had a less stellar career than me."

yeah all he did was beat boris becker in a wimbledon final. good point serena.

i would also like to highlight one match from the women's draw:

jankovic v safarova. a match of superb quality throughout. saf never quit on anything in that match and 1 point was so good the crowd gave them an ovation that must have lasted a full minute. both women should be commended on their skill and attitude to the game of tennis.

overall a great championships. can't believe i have to wait another year to see tim henman lift the tropy at last. ;)

WimbledonAce - July 9, 2007 07:28 PM (GMT)
True flame, I watched Janko v Safarova and it was the best womens match Ive seen in ages :ok:

petalp - July 9, 2007 07:39 PM (GMT)
Fairytale Marion Bartoli (her post-match speech and her dad's response..)
Hero/Heroine Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal, and Venus Williams.
Villain The Wimbledon organisers (middle Sunday was a bad call)
Best match Federer v Nadal
Worst match Most matches were so much better than RG.. too many good ones to outweight any bad ones. Possibly Berdych. Never good when a player just seems to lose interest.

Most improved player Rafa Nadal. Really wants to do well on grass, possibly moreso than hard court at USO.. an attitude to be applauded
Most surprisingly good grasscourt player Davydenko (his manager had suggested that he took all of June off, he was so bad on grass!)
Most disappointing player None really.. maybe Amelie for form going awol when first tested. Disappointed for her rather than disappointed in her.
Luckiest player Federer's unscheduled break for sightseeing
Unluckiest player Tommy Haas, Novak Djokovic (injuries poleaxed them with Rafa/ Fed challenges to look forward to..)

Best quote Serena is usually pretty good value
Fashion faux pas Tati's red knickers.. oops!!
Best commentator Johnny Mac
Worst commentator Greg Rusedski (can only get better)
Best shot Rafa's half volley against Soderling

Drama-queen/whinger Davydenko, Safin, Nalbandian (all about the tournament in some shape or form (incl food)).. Tim for creating so much drama so early in the tournament!! And of course Serena for her match against Dani H.

MissSospanFach - July 9, 2007 07:51 PM (GMT)
Ooh well done petalp I forgot about the whinger that is Nalbandian- so he gets my nomination in the whinger category. Two years in a row he's moaned and moaned- remember last year when he didn't want his matches to clash with the world cup?!

Big Al - July 9, 2007 09:39 PM (GMT)
QUOTE (Big Al @ Jul 9 2007, 02:42 PM)

Fashion faux pas - Rogers dazzling white suit

I meant fashion statement, of course!

Dinky Jo - July 9, 2007 09:53 PM (GMT)
I'll just add on to my list, for worst commentator - i must say that greg annoys me occasionally with his "what i don't understand is why player X didn't move slightly to the left and play the backhand down the line" or whatever. It's probably slightly easier to make those calls when you're not playing. Fair enough if a player is constantly missing a certain shot, but it does get annoying after a while. Especially when he was doing it all through the mixed doubles final "oh, jamie should have......" My god, it's a fast game man, it didn't look that easy to make the right shot selection at times - it looked like sometimes it was down to quick reflexes....

sorry, rant over.....

SuperBRAT - July 9, 2007 10:00 PM (GMT)
Fairytale:

has to be these two - Murray and Jankovic, a scratch pairing, a delight on court and a BRITISH GS win - first for 20 years.   It has to be said that these two played great matches and were very good and very entertaining. Ironic that Jamie Murray got a GS before our favourite Andy.

Also Bartoli, I mean she knocked out Jankovic, Henin (biggest upset of the tournie in the singles) and was a worthy runner up despite all our criticism of her before she fought liek a toger and thorughly deserved this against all odds. Charming woman. :D

petalp - July 9, 2007 10:07 PM (GMT)
Best Matches on the women's side:

Chakvetadze v Krajicek
Jankovic v Safarova
Venus' R1 match (Venus was far too good for all else)
Srebotnik v Hantuchova (titanic struggle!)
Hantuchova v Serena (just for drama value)
Ivanovic v Vaidisova (the tension!)
Jankovic v Bartoli (shock number one..)
Bartoli v Henin (sheer shock value)

Venus v Sharpie/ Kuzzy (mainly for Venus' awesome grass court tennis)

SuperBRAT - July 9, 2007 10:08 PM (GMT)
Best matches:

Gasquet v Roddick - come on the guy has never won a five setter and he fought back from two sets down, the winner count was amazing as was the effort level. I loved this match, Gasquet in all his glory and a one -D player undone in the end. Roddick played tough tennsi though, every credit to Andy

Henman v Moya - a true classic, such a tussle between two great veterans. The overnight drama, the classic style of play on grass winning, the third set going on for ages in a titanic gladiatorial style. And a Britsh win form a grass court great    I don't think I ever got into any match as much as this one. Moya really earned my respect here also. Well done guys

I also enjoyed

Hewitt v Djokovic - it wasn't to be for the dogged Aussie but that match had some great points and deserved a 5th set.

Djoko v Baghi - I found that very tight and stressful. I like both but was cheering for Baghi.

You're right Teamjustine,Henin played awesome tennis at Wimbledon.I just wanted her to go all the way and and Wimbledon to her tally so that's why I was disappointed :(

Just saw this quote on the beeb:

"If it was at Roland Garros I would probably have gone naked but we have to be more relaxed in England."
Michael Llodra after winning the men's doubles title at Wimbledon with Arnaud Clement. It was no idle threat from the Frenchman, who once hid naked inside the locker of fellow professional Ivan Ljubicic.

Some more murrovic ones:

Eric doesn't give me any kisses...I'm with Jelena now!"
Murray adds to the rumours by claiming he has already forgotten about regular men's doubles partner Eric Butorac.

"He kept asking me what kind of dress I am going to wear to the champions' ball - long or short...and I had to disappoint him by telling him it is very long!"
Jankovic keeps the pot boiling.

And a Venus one:

"A win's a win, unless it is not a win, and then it's not a win."
Venus Williams gives Sue Barker a lesson in advanced truism after her Wimbledon final win.

And a Venus one:

"A win's a win, unless it is not a win, and then it's not a win."
Venus Williams gives Sue Barker a lesson in advanced truism after her Wimbledon final win
.

I completely agree with that one, it had me laughing when I was watching it.

Anyways, I thought I'd write out the Daily Mail's own thoughts printed today-

Best Match- There were quite a few contenders between the rain; Roddick v Gasquet, Bartol v Henin, Henman v Moya, Djokovic v Baghdatis. But for quality nothing exceeded the men's singles final between Federer and Nadal.

Tear-jerker- Richard Williams, father of Venus, consoling Bartoli's fatger Walter, who broke down as she paid tribute to him after losing the women's singles final.

Best earner for the All England Club- The 10,000 umbrellas they sold ina fortnight.

Biggest loss maker
- The 6,500 sunhats that remained unsold.

Take the money and run- Israel's Anna Smashnova walked off with £10,000 for losing 6-0 6-0 in her first round, one of 17 first-round loasers among the women to win four games or fewer.

Best shot- Henin's dropshot from behind the baseline against Serena Williams at 15-30 when she was trying to serve out their quarter-final. Much good it was to do her eventually.

Weirdest nervous tactics- Nadal constantly pulling at his shorts around his bottom, Bartoli's skipping before serving.

Best British performance- Jamie Murray winnin the mixed doubles, with an honourable mention to girls' semi-finalist Anna Fitzpatrick.

A very British gesture- Giving a wild card to Croatia's Marian Cilic (as did the Artois Champonships) when he will be returning to Wimbledon when he will be returning in September for the Davis Cup match against... Great Britain.

Most welcome newcomer- Serbia's Goethe-quoting Jank Tipsarevic.

What we cannot get enough of- The passion and sportsmanship displayed by Djokovic and Baghdatis in their marathon quarter-final.

What we've had enough of- Puerile shouts from the crows breaking the hush on Centre Court, such as the especially unfunny 'C'mon Tim' when he is not even playing.

Most difficult job- Either the court-coverers, or those having to explain the expensive failings of British tennis after the second-round singles wipeout.

Question left hanging in the air- How does Nadal keep running and running?

My categories were better than Daily Mail's :)

But I agree with some of the above, even if one or two suspiciously matched with the Daily Mail's agenda (I'm not surprised they're against equal prize money for example).

Yep, your categories are much better, just thought I'd share their thoughts. Personally, some of their tennis reporting has been ridiculous- they don't know their facts, e.g. one of the journos predicted a Serena v Justine final AFTER the draw had been made, duh! Also they said that Lindsay D couldn't play as she was expecting her first child when she'd given birth weeks before!

one of the tabloids had Murray and jankovic as their front page story on monday :yikes:

"A Brit wins Wimbledon" was the headline - cant remember which paper it was......

Think it was the Daily Mirror, not that I bought it but I think I've trained my eyes to look out for Jamie Murray pics, lol!

mightyjeditribble - July 10, 2007 06:00 PM (GMT)
The Grauniad had a picture of Jamie Murray on the first page.

As you might expect, it was rather cleverly done --- when the paper was folded (as it usually is where it's sold), you saw the title "Murray* wins Wimbledon**", and of the picture you could only see the cup lifted up over his head (but not his face).

And underneath the picture it had "* not that Murray and ** not that title".

Hm, reading this, it sounds rather lame. I guess you need to have seen it --- but I thought it was well done.

The Daily Mirror. Unfortunately they had to spoil it with Posh and f**king Becks sharing the cover, and for what reason, attending the British grand prix. To add to this Jamie was relegated to a tiny segment near the back. Lewis Hamilton got the back page for coming 3rd, just about sums it up really

HenmanHillForever - July 12, 2007 04:55 PM (GMT)
Fairytale - Murray/Jankovic's unseeded Mixed Doubles victory, it was good to finally see Jamie Murray showing everyone that he is no longer seen as just 'Andy's Brother', and the flirting between the two was funny to see and it was good to see some fun brought to the Doubles.

Hero/Heroine - Marion Bartoli for coming from obscurity to claim some unexpected scalps and to battle her way into the Women's Final

Villain - Wimbledon organisers for not playing on the Middle Sunday. as well as Robin Soderling for mocking Rafael Nadal's service routine (although it was quite funny).

Best match - Henman vs Moya, Federer vs Nadal, Djokovic vs Baghdatis, Djokovic vs Hewitt, Vaidisova vs Mauresmo, Henin vs Williams, S.Williams vs Hantuchova (for the pure drama), Tipsarevic vs Gonzalez, Jankovic vs Safarova

Worst match - Nadal vs Berdych, Williams vs Kuznetsova was pretty disapointing for a Quarter-Final

Most improved player - Rafael Nadal, Venus Williams (once again)

Most surprisingly good grasscourt player - Rafael Nadal, Marion Bartoli, Davydenko was quite impressive.

Most disappointing player - As the number 5 seed i expected Fernando Gonzalez too go a fair bit further than the 3rd round.

Luckiest player - Roger Federer for having about 5 days rest due to rain delays and the withdrawal of Tommy Haas.

Unluckiest player - Maria Sharapova for having to face Venus Williams as early as the 4th round, Novak Djokovic for havig to retire in the semis after playing 9 hours over the previos two days

Best quote

Fashion faux pas - Kuznetsova's hair

Best commentator - John McEnroe

Worst commentator - I find Greg Rudsedski a fairly annoying commentator

Best shot - I think i recall Richard Gasquet hitting an amazing cross-court forehand against Roger Federer.

Drama-queen/whinger - Serena Williams for pretending too need a toilet break but then miraculously not needing one after breaking serve in he rmatch against Hantuchova
