Well done to Venus! From the R16 on she suddenly looked like the strongest contender for the title and now she has fulfilled that promise. As noted this draws her even with Henin in terms of Slams won at six, each with four apiece of their favourite Slam titles.

Well done as well to giant-killer Bartoli, who had a dream run here and gave Venus plenty of nervous moments throughout the final I thought. The scoreline doesn't do her credit as she never looked overwhelmed by the occasion or the opponent. In the end as Venus said in her remarks she only played 'a little bit better' than Bartoli and it made the difference.

A shame to see them both a bit walking wounded towards the end, which reflected both a very physical match but also reminded of the scheduling mishaps which reared their heads in the men's draw as well.

I never said she didn't. I made a light hearted comment about someone in the crowd shouting about winning it for Serena who went out early to an unfortunate unjury. Im sure Venus did win it for herself but it surely gave Serena great satisfaction to see her sister winning it.
