Title: Rusedskis Commentary
liam_valid - July 7, 2007 12:28 PM (GMT)
im really surprised by him. I think hes informative, insightful and fresh, especially considering (i think) this is the first major he has commented on. The only drawback is his irritating voice, he sounds like he is talking to children half the time, quite patronising
yorkshire - July 7, 2007 01:01 PM (GMT)
Hes not bad, and like you say, hes new to it.
WimbledonAce - July 7, 2007 01:40 PM (GMT)
I guess the 3rd option was meant to be good?! Not being funny but I never thought Frew McMillen was that good.

SerenaW19 - July 7, 2007 02:06 PM (GMT)
Im pleasantly surprised by him I must say.
It's not a car crash anyway
But I do find his voice annoying though, sure I can get used to it however....
Dark_Necrofear - July 7, 2007 03:21 PM (GMT)
I actually have to give him credit and his commentry is very fresh and fun.He is in every point. I like his style.I would have to say though that my favourite Wimbledon commentators will have to be the retired John Barret,Virginia Wade,Johnny Mac and Chrissie with Martina Nav.They are golden. The joke for me is Becker. When he comments, its abeginning and an end.I mean no one says anything after him.He is a scream.
dl04 - July 7, 2007 03:34 PM (GMT)
I find him so annoying i must say, they'll give anyone a job these days  roflmao
The Canadian OAP should be at home with the kids roflmao
BIG-TODGER - July 7, 2007 03:45 PM (GMT)
Greg's not bad at all, a bit matter of fact but that's fine.
McEnroe is top for me, love his dry humour-at least i think its humour.
Becker must get the prize for stating the bleedin obvious more often than most, and he is trying to sound dumb isn't he?
yorkshire - July 7, 2007 03:51 PM (GMT)
The best team for me is John McEnroe and David Mercer.

McEnroe,Barret and Wade are the best without a doubt!
yorkshire - July 7, 2007 03:56 PM (GMT)
I like and respect Mercer's opinion. Hes been both a player and an umpire so hes qualified to comment, more so than some commentators.
I also like how he doesn't talk down to people. He doesn't pitch his commentary at 2 week tennis spectators, he talks on a level that suits those who have a reasonable knowledge of tennis as well.

SerenaW19 - July 7, 2007 04:29 PM (GMT)
My favs are Virginia Wade and Sam Smith. There's virtually nothing Sam Smith doesn't know!

Sam smith is a total leg-end!

I'm really impressed by Greg's commentary, especially as he is new to it. :) I think he articulates exceptionally well, is insightful and coherent, and has a good voice to listen to. I've enjoyed him much more than some of the others. Good stuff Greg

Mac is fab, I love the humour. :D
Martina Navratilova is the most insightful and informative on women's side. She really does get down to the nitty gritty and points out with clarity what is happening on the court. She's very good at troubleshooting where a player is going wrogn and very hard to disagree with on that.

Martina always seems to moan al ot imo. Or point out faults that could go unnoticed. For example in her match against Ivanovic she said that Venus' shorts were so skimpy they surely contravened Wimbledon's clothing rules. And she always goes on about grunts too!
When she's talking about tennis her knowledge is exceptional, but as a package as a commentator she's not as pleasing as I hoped she would be. Chris Evert is slightly better imo as she keeps her mind on the job at hand so to speak. I like Austin but I feel she has too many favourites and it colours her commentary.
Flame - July 7, 2007 06:10 PM (GMT)
imo sam smith is the most insightful member of the bbc commentary team. she is right on the money every time.
no wonder she's the last brit woman to make the second week. top girl.
Big Al - July 7, 2007 06:57 PM (GMT)
Really good commentary by Greg.Buy that I mean he is articulate, insightful and basically tells you things that arent immediately obvious from watching the match .Connors is good too, Mac is entertaining if repetitive( 'You cannot be serious' every other sentence)
John Lloyd : Even I could commentate as well as him .He basically just describes what you can see yourself.
Flame - July 7, 2007 08:21 PM (GMT)
if rusedski use the phrase "finds a way to win" one more time, i will have to slap him.
TeamJustine - July 7, 2007 10:06 PM (GMT)
Best commentary pairing is Tracy austin and Johnny Mac Imo!! :ok:
Btw did anyone see him on csi:ny tonight
And does anyone else find Jimmy connors 'Mmmmmmmmh' after every point on annoying???
Russiafan - July 7, 2007 10:50 PM (GMT)
My favourite commentator has got to be Sam Smith - she is knowledgeable, insightful and humble.
Greg Rusedski is a solid commentator. Funniest moment of the week was when Greg was commentating with the loathsome Andrew "Call me Andy" Castle"...
Andrew Castle: "Where have all of these Serbs come from?"
Greg Rusedski: "Serbia."
roflmao
Castle is such an arse-kissing moron, I'm so glad that Greg took the p*ss out of the Castle's inane comments.

I know what you mean SW19, like yesterday in the studio, she said ' Of the two, people would probably think Serena should have the 4 Wimby's'
Great, just rain on Venus's day
Not that she'll give a crap however roflmao

I think Martina is not afraid to speak her mind and she will throw in her opinions as well as more objective stuff too. I like that though, and I don't think she is especially objectionable. Obviously if people disagree then they are not going to like her, c'est la vie, but one thing I really like is that she is not afraid to be critical in her analysis of players. She does not sit in awe of anyone nor play up their good points and ignore their bad points like some do. I think it's perfectly relevant to to comment on on court behaviour as well as tennis, others do anyway. Contravening clothing rules and schreeching on court deserve comment IMO and I agree with what she says on those issues anyway. I don't tend to talk clothes much but i must say I was surprised to see Venus turn up dressed like that and also get away with it. I was shocked not only because the shorts are just too short, but shocked more as Venus tends to respect the Wimbledon style well. People can dress hwo they like but tennis is a daytime family viewing event and that should be respected. It was dissappointing to see her look like some 'ho' from a gangsta rap video, it really was.
I tend to like MArtina's after match stuff, she said some very insightful stuff about Sharapova which she needs to take heed of. She also said some great stuff about the men's which was of more use than what the men with her said. Anyway she seemed to think the Williamses were superior to Sharapova and she defendign Venus's committment so you should be happy :D

does anyone miss Chris Bailey now that he's buggered off to Australia?
petalp - July 8, 2007 11:35 AM (GMT)
I think that Rusedski is a poor commentator.
Always jumping to extremes about a player's ability, and not the most insightful. The player is always the best thing since sliced bread if he plays a good shot, bt then if he plays a poor shot 10 minutes later, then aparently he will never make it to the top.. :blah:
I agree that Mac is one of the best. Mercer is ok, but he has that dramatic tone in his voice that can be quite grating. Contrary to other thoughts, I think that he can be a little patronising, though he does know his stuff.
will go against the grain here. I think that Andrew Castle actually knows his tennis much better than people give him credit for, has a good tennis brain. John Lloyd isn't the sharpest knife in the draw though imo..

No. He once annoyed me by saying Agassi couldnt beat Sampras unless he wasnt playing well.Ended up with egg on his face that day (Aussie open 2000)
He's gone to Australia? I wish Castle would go and join him, Inverdale as well

Cannot stand John Inverdale. He can't help being offensive on a semi-regular basis for starters, and frankly doesn't know his tennis. A dreadful choice for Today At Wimbledon.
I would actually like to see Claire Balding present the show. She did an excellent job with the Olympics, is objective and knlwedgeable about sport in general and tennis in particular.
Looks like I'm on my own about Andrew Castle. I really do think that he is passionate and knowledgeable about the game. Just needs to be a little easier on the hyperbole re: Asbo Andy, or Tim..

Inverdale sucks. He is a terrible choice. I prefered Sue Barker, I think she is an excellent presenter and has the skills to host and chai rdiscusions that Inverdale lacks. He is the WORST person of all IMO
Balding is good, I was not totally sold on her at times though. Rather her than Inverdale, but i prefer Sue Barker. Hazel Irvien is a godo presenter but nto sure how good she'd be on tennis.
I like Castle too. He's a good presenter - did you see him when he stood in on a moring show? I was quite impressed. :D
I agree on Mercer - he's often patronising and some fo the stuff he says is bizarre. I'm not saying he is bad, he is good in the most part but he does have his moments.
