Title: How much will Bartoli test Venus?
Description: What are your expectations....
SerenaW19 - July 6, 2007 04:45 PM (GMT)
What scoreline would you predict or like to see?
Will Venus be nervous? She is used to playing the likes of Serena and Lindsay in slam finals after all.
Will Bartoli reproduce what she did today or will she give us the pleasure of another 61 62 final?
Queen Justine - July 6, 2007 05:44 PM (GMT)
Bartoli -v- Venus that's gonna be the final.

OH. MY. GOD.
I can't believe Marion Bartoli is in the Wimbledon final.
I'm in shock. :o :o :o
Dark_Necrofear - July 6, 2007 06:25 PM (GMT)
Justine will never win Wimbledon.I say that not because I dont like her but because its sum unwritten tennis God law that a great must not have a complete collection.Federer is also at the mercy of the tennis Gods spite! Both him and justine are amazing talents but they are being shunned by the tennis GODS.
Now Im glad that Justine is out and I say that now coz I dont like her :P
SerenaW19 - July 6, 2007 06:26 PM (GMT)
Serena, Graf, Navratilova, Laver, Agassi have comeplete collections and they're all greats :P
I can't believe the final is the 18th seed vs. the 24th seed roflmao

I believe that Bartoli is actually a tougher match for Venus. Now she is the heavy favourite again, whereas Henin would have been the favourite. Also, Bartoli hits the ball low and flat, whereas Henin uses topspin, which suits Venus more as she can swing away at waist height. I'm believe Bartoli can take a set, maybe more........I'm thinking Sharapova 2004 here
Lex - July 6, 2007 06:57 PM (GMT)
Venus is awesome at the moment and has never lost a Wimbers semi so she's on familiar ground in the final.
I reckon 6-0 6-3 Venus (with Uranus rising :lmaao: )

I don't think Henin would've been the favourite, it would've been pretty much 50/50 they would've both had different kinds of pressure on them.
As Lex said Venus knows how to get it done. 2004 was a freak situation, Serena had looked dodgy in the semis and wasn't hungry enough on the day.
Look at Venus play her last three matches, tell me she's not hungry and tell me how to beat her.

yes I expect Venus to win, as she been superb in her last three games, and she should play like that again tommorrow. I'm just saying you shouldn't count out Bartoli, as she is more than capable of pulling out an upset, and Venus is more likely to underestimate her, than she would underestimate Henin. I think she'll come out firing tommorrow, as she'll be bouyed by her win.

Definitely, Bartoli as you said could actually test Venus more than Henin in someways.
SuperBRAT - July 6, 2007 07:25 PM (GMT)
Bartoli seemed to test her quite a lot! roflmao

I dont care who wins, I am just glad the umpalumpa lost, I think she will be off first round at the US open.
vivahate - July 7, 2007 07:15 AM (GMT)
certainly not my top picks to make the ladies final, but methinks venus is gonna cream bartoli :P
fedrules - July 7, 2007 07:42 AM (GMT)
Switched over to Roddick-Gasquet match on Swiss TV and couldn't believe it when I flipped back and saw Bartoli was 4-0 up in third set, especially as commentators were almost writing her off after 1st set. What happened to Justine? Was she outplayed or did she 'choke'?Agree Venus will probably win easily, but thought same about Justine. :(
Brakkus - July 7, 2007 07:56 AM (GMT)
The lowest seeds ever in a women's final since the computer rankings started.
However you have to say that Venus particulary at Wimbledon,is probably the best grass court player of this decade. Her sixth final. She really is far better than her current ranking. She's a top 5 player. If she stays clear of injury now, then I can see her getting back to the top soon.
I really can see one of two things happening today.
1. Bartoli totally freezes and chokes, going down in 20 mins in the opening set, giving her no chance of chasing down Venus.
2.She hits with total freedom knowing she is the underdog. She is a real clean ball striker. Some have compared her to Seles, for obvious reasons. She reminds me of Agassi, working the ball side to side, with compact swings. Not a lot can go wrong in her game.
I hpoe No2 happens,as this could be a real classic, but I fear the fitness of Venus and the superior firepower on serve and the forehand will subdue the plucky Bartoli.
petalp - July 7, 2007 08:15 AM (GMT)
Venus seems to have been playing so well, certainly from the match against Sharapova and onwards from there.
She is a wonderful retriever and with her speed around the court and wingspan, she is best equipped to deal with Marion's early, flat hitting..
But I didn't think that Marion would beat either Jelena or Justine, so what do I know?
I do however think that this is Venus' title for the taking. It's going to be a fariytale win for whoever does take the title, although obviously moreso for Marion! The idea of Venus becoming a 4 time Wimbledon champion must be a hugely exciting one for her..
Tenez - July 7, 2007 08:27 AM (GMT)
Bartoli will not freeze. She might lose comprehensively cause she cannot handle Venus power but I know she won't choke. She is not the type.
Manzikert - July 7, 2007 09:56 AM (GMT)
Well, Henin had her chances (break points at 5-all to serve it out, break points to get back on serve early in the decider) but didn't take them. Bartoli was absolutely fearless despite it being her first time on Centre Court and there's no reason to believe why she won't be the same again today.
Honestly it's a more worrisome match-up for Venus, and a lose-lose situation. If Venus wins, people will write it off on account of only facing 'unknown' Bartoli in her first-ever final and forget her stellar performances of the second week (which include three convincing Top 6 wins including a former champion). If she loses, people will slate her for being a three-time champion who couldn't even take care of the fluke underdog (and also conveniently forget that the No 1 and No 3 players also fell to this 'underdog') and will start sounding the death knell on her career again. It's not the ideal pressure situation to have going into it.
In terms of the match-up itself, I actually think Henin would've been slightly preferable. Henin definitely feels the intimidation factor coming up against the Williams sisters (witness how emotional she got against Serena even though she was always in control of the match), and it would likely have even been worse against Venus with that 1-7 H2H, especially not having played her in so long and not knowing what to expect. Instead Bartoli will be looking to cap her final upset of several this past fortnight, and is such a dangerous returner and has such accuracy with her low, flat groundstrokes that she has just the game to disarm Venus (whose serve is a major weapon and of course she is prone to bad patches where she can't find the lines).
Poor old Mauresmo might find herself even more bitter about crashing out if it turns out she only had a year to enjoy being billed as the only Frenchwoman to have won Wimbledon alongside the great Lenglen.
I suppose we can just hope that both finalists play to their potential and give us a competitive, entertaining match.
SerenaW19 - July 7, 2007 11:00 AM (GMT)
If Venus wins I don't think people will write it off just because it was against Bartoli. It doesn't matter who Venus has to face she would win anyway, whether it was Henin or Serena.
She was playing the tennis of the tournament no doubt from the 4th round onwards. I actually thought Serena set the tone with her 61 60 win over Sequera, but then Venus just upped the level again.

Venus has won and by Marion herself the Henin conqueror has said,Henin ,may be the world number 1 but Venus is the number in the world on Grass. Its amazing how people always slate the Williams girls for being correspndance tennis players or part time players as its better known but they just prove that a ranking is a mere number and talent and class is forever. They truely are the specimens of tennis greatness!!!!!
