Hero of the day - some will nominate her for the category below, but how about Serena - she physically looked in a lot of pain to me, but dug in, and still won the match
Villain of the day - Bjorkman for ruthlessly ending the Wayne Arthurs retirement party, Wimbledon schedulers for refusing to follow common sense and have matches on the Sunday
Best match - Venus v Morigami, Youzhny v Nieminen sounded good although I didn't see it.
Worst match - in a way, Serena v Hantuchova - had a strangely anti-climatic feel to it in 3rd set. Baghdatis v Nalbandian sounded a let-down.
Shot of the day
Quote of the day - no quote as such, but Soderling taking the p*ss out of Nadal's short-adjusting antics was hilarious!

Dinky Jo - July 3, 2007 09:44 AM (GMT)
Hero of the day - Baggy for putting out Nalby - we love him
Villain of the day - bloody Wimbledon - and the weather......
Best match - Nadal vs. Soderling - I know it's not over yet, but that was a good match - full of twists and turns
Worst match
Shot of the day
Quote of the day - the one by paszek when told how much she had already earned by getting to this stage.....maybe not a quote as such but a jaw-drop, complete stunned silence moment. :)

Flame - July 3, 2007 10:10 AM (GMT)
serena was both the hero and the villian of the day imo.

SuperBRAT - July 3, 2007 12:15 PM (GMT)
I think the BBC are vilains for not showing us Bjorkman v Arthurs in Wayne's last ever singles match. We don't all want to see Nadal and a Williams sister.

Stupid and ungracious act of the day: Serena and that fake bathroom break. She was saved by the rain as it was, maybe she should just accept her luck and fate now and again.

I think it was on interactive??? But not sure, if they failed to put it in the multi screen that would have been a blunder......oh well never mind, tis too late to complain now....

I don't think those who e-mailed the BBc were villains at all. I heard what they said and they are just expressing their opinion. I had to agree with most of it. Sorry but it's one thing to fight fair and another to fight dirty. She did th elatter, it was not a pleasant spectacle and I think she's gone and turned the public against her now.

I'm not a Serena hater, I have admired her fighting spirit but I did not admire her perfromance the other day. In fact I have to say I found it all rather pathetic and was embarrassed for her, she lost quite a lot of dignity and respect that day. Sure, fight til the end but do so with dignity and grace. If you can't do that then give it up and bow out with your dignity intact.

She was extreemely unlucky to get an injury though, the rain break while lucky was hardly full compensation for an injury that could keep her out for a while after Wimbledon.

I know you're not a Serena hater SB, so you're able to comment from a fairly neutral position which I appreciate. But could you explain exactly how has she tarnished her dignity and grace? Just by taking a bathroom break, because no-one's ever done that before! She showed such desire that Im not sure a lot players would have had. Amelie certainly didn´t and put a very poor showing in the third set as defending champion. My respect for her is more tarnished by that showing than by Serena's. But I digress, sure the bathroom break was gamesmanship, at least in part. But people now seem to be implying that they can never look at her with respect again, for what? One incident. She uses gamesmanship A LOT less than MANY others on the WTA imo.

I actually think the Wimbledon crowd will still be behind her, or they won't be aginast her anyway, the despicable people who e-mailed the BBC are clearly the kind of people who love to hate the Williams sisters and jump like a starved feral beast at the chance to do so.

Q. What kind of treatment did you have on the break?

SERENA WILLIAMS: A lot of ice, a lot of massage, drinking a lot of fluids, like tons of fluids. Ice, massage, yeah, that's it pretty much.

Later in the interview......

Q. How did you keep going for the last four games considering you wanted to go for the toilet break?

SERENA WILLIAMS: God, I had to use the bathroom so bad because I kept drinking so much fluid. I don't know. I just kept thinking to myself, one more game. I kept saying to myself one more game, until finally there were no games left.

At two distinctly points in the interview she mentions drinking A LOT of fluids in the rain delay. Why do we need to assume the toilet break was a complete fake

My problem with Serena's bathroom break was that after making such a big deal about it she didn't go when the umpire said she could?

She was drinking a lot of fluids and probably did need to go but it didn't look good the way she only seemed to want to go before Hantuchova's serve and turned down the opportunity to go before her own.

That said Hantuchova only has herself to blame for letting things get to her.

I agree, it was dodgy, and only the most naive person would say there was no gamesmanship there. I just resent some people's accusations (on various threads) that Serena cheated. Which she didn't. She would only resort to tactics like that in the most dire of circumstances. I think a lot of players would have either retired or given up after losing that tie break.

I don't see the win as tainted and Im proud to be a fan of Serena :)

Praise de Lord Jehova .... miracles of miracles, Serena was limping this morning when they showed her on BBC and now she's not .... or at least she forgot to!

That's it Serena, I know you are terribly, terribly injured with a torn calf muscle roflmao , I bet she wins. I bet if Serena wins, Justine won't do a press conference saying "how she feels violated and that Serena took advantage of me or all Serena had to do was just turn up" roflmao roflmao

She's forgotten to limp again roflmao roflmao f......g cheat!!!

As the commentators said "nothing wrong with the movement", but she hit a shot straight at Justine!!!

What are you on? Serena is moving awfully. The only reason she is still in the championship is her serve and it's the only reason she's still in this match.

Brick. Wall.

Serena should not have played if she knew she wasn't able to put in a decent performance, she may as well be in Florida resting up the injury for the USO, rather than at Wimbledon making it worse for a lost cause.
