Title: Federer v Safin

chetanpv - June 29, 2007 03:10 PM (GMT)
Any predictions before the match starts?
I'm saying Safin in 4 sets (6-4, 2-6, 7-6, 6-4)

What?

Chet?

Started another Federer thread?

:coffee:

Safin would simply do well not to embarrass himself.

Still it must be said that he is the last player besides Nadal to have won against Federer in a Slam. It took a 9-7 squeaker in the fifth, however, and he still trails their H2H 2-7, a host of those losses coming even before Federer hit No 1 and Safin was only recently removed from that spot himself; furthermore their last encounter also came on grass which he lost. He's hardly the Federer-slayer everyone likes to think for some reason.

I started a thread cos I think it'll be a close match with Marat winning.
I would not start a thread of Blake v JCF now would I?

Nope.. you start the threads with the prediction of Federer losing rather than his opponent winning.. there is a difference ;)

yorkshire - June 29, 2007 04:37 PM (GMT)
Starts nearly all the Fed threads = closet Fed fan.

You knows it.

chetanpv - June 29, 2007 05:36 PM (GMT)
All right game on...

Dinky Jo - June 29, 2007 05:38 PM (GMT)
i'm pretty sure fed will win this - but i do hope marat puts up a fight.....

however, i wouldn't be at all gutted if Safin managed to beat fed.....he could do with something good happening to him this season

Dinky Jo - June 29, 2007 05:40 PM (GMT)
someone with a TV - are the beeb broadcasting this match - i assume they are??? there's no live feed up yet

chetanpv - June 29, 2007 05:41 PM (GMT)
DJ. Marat is winning this match...for sure...

chetanpv - June 29, 2007 05:42 PM (GMT)
Unfortunately even ESPN is showing the Blake match..as its a TB..

Dinky Jo - June 29, 2007 05:43 PM (GMT)
ah, ok - i've found the coverage now..... :)

chet, i really don't believe that safin has the confidence in himself right now to beat federer...... :(

Wise_Analyst - June 29, 2007 05:45 PM (GMT)
Really can't see Federer losing this I'm afraid chet, Safin's simply not that good on grass. I'd like to think this could be a competitive match though.

Decent start from the Russian, taking Federer to deuce and holding serve to love, although the pyjama wearing Swiss has just returned the compliment. And broken Safin to love. 3-1.

I had a dream about Canas coming from 2 sets down to oust Fed this year (yes, I actually dreamt about him losing too  ), but just checked the draw and they can't meet till the SF, which is hugely unlikely. Still, my dreams generally come true in some shape or form - maybe Safin was this mystery assailant.

chetanpv - June 29, 2007 05:45 PM (GMT)
Safin needs to just go for his shots. He cant just lazily rally from the back court.

Dinky Jo - June 29, 2007 05:46 PM (GMT)
and marat manages to get broken.....

chetanpv - June 29, 2007 05:47 PM (GMT)
They were showing some highlights of the AO 2005 SF and Safin won that match as he was going for winners. He needs to do that today too.

SaraLess - June 29, 2007 05:53 PM (GMT)
Looking very good from Federer so far

Dinky Jo - June 29, 2007 05:54 PM (GMT)
marat isn't selecting his shots very well and seems to be over-hitting quite a bit :(

bloody double break

If you buy the apple i-phone that came out today, you can get it. I just some promos in the shop.

Lex - June 29, 2007 06:00 PM (GMT)
They're not available in Europe until November :(

chetanpv - June 29, 2007 06:02 PM (GMT)
This will come a time when Safin's shots start to land..

Flame - June 29, 2007 06:02 PM (GMT)
some pride from big red. the fed serve is broken. :)

Dinky Jo - June 29, 2007 06:02 PM (GMT)
:yahoo: Marat's woken up....... :yahoo:

chetanpv - June 29, 2007 06:03 PM (GMT)
Its all up to Marat for winning/losing the match.

and promptly fallen back asleep again

chetanpv - June 29, 2007 06:06 PM (GMT)
WTF

SaraLess - June 29, 2007 06:08 PM (GMT)
You see flashes of Marats ability, but flashes aren't good enough when playing Federer on his favourite surface...

chetanpv - June 29, 2007 06:10 PM (GMT)
I just hope Marat keeps holding till 5-4. Then he can go for 4 straight winners and win the set.

SaraLess - June 29, 2007 06:12 PM (GMT)
I think you're hoping in vain, Chet, I'd be really, really surprised if Safin takes a set off Federer.

(btw-Gonzalez AND Blake out. Gonzo was pathetic today, defensive against a guy who couldn't attack. Woeful!)

Dinky Jo - June 29, 2007 06:17 PM (GMT)
1st racquet smash for Marat...... :smash:

edit: make that 2 smashes :smash: :smash:

petalp - June 29, 2007 06:19 PM (GMT)
what a break point...

Wise_Analyst - June 29, 2007 06:20 PM (GMT)
Ridiculously lucky shot from Federer enables him to break.

Flame - June 29, 2007 06:20 PM (GMT)
what's with these lines? they kill the ball.

barrystar - June 29, 2007 06:21 PM (GMT)
Great 2nd serve from Safin at 15-40, but things do not look at all good for him right now.

I like Safin, but I want Fed to do it this year.

Wise, it was beautifully executed backspun backhand, you may not have seen this in the 90s, so your surprise is excused :D
