Title: Friday 29th June

Manzikert - June 29, 2007 02:38 PM (GMT)
Not much occurring on the men's side just yet, with the women's matches turning into epics.

But a potential upset is in the cards as Tipsarevic leads Gonzalez two sets to one 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 and is on serve 2-3 in the fourth. The Serb missed out on a break opportunity just before the rains came, and it's hard to avoid the opinion that it's the Chilean who benefits most from the interruption. I thought on the basis of his first two matches he was vulnerable and that's panned out today, but he will probably make full use of this lifeline.

In a rematch of last year's LA final, Tursunov blitzed Haas 6-1 in the first but the German (who has quietly been playing well this week despite nearly missing out due to recent injury) hit back in the second 6-4. On serve in the third with Tursunov locked at deuce on his serve 1-2.

Manzikert - June 29, 2007 03:43 PM (GMT)
Sure enough Gonzalez returned from the break a new player, wrapping up the fourth set 6-4 to take it into a decider. He faltered a bit at the outset of the fifth and Tipsarevic led 2-0, but the Chilean then took four games on the trot to lead 4-2 and seems headed for the finish line.

Haas similarly rebounds from a break down in the third to grind out the tiebreaker and lead two sets to one now 1-6, 6-4, 7-6(5).

PHM has also taken control of his match against Ljubicic 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. It would be a very good result for the Frenchman if he can see it through.

I was actually impressed by PHM when he played Rafa at RG last year.. He's a dangerous player, but just lacks consistency.

Good resilience by Gonzo, although he's not looking too convincing.

Not sure about that - I had the Frenchman down as heavy favourite for this match. Glad to see he's taking control of it, he's 10 times more interesting a player than Ljubicic.

Gonzalez hasn't really had to do anything too special to wrestle this match back from Tipsarevic; the Serb seemed distinctly uncomfortable at the prospect of seeing the match out. He's now 5-2 down in the decider and all but eliminated.

Haas vs Tursunov is panning out how I expected so far - the Russian off to a flyer but unable to maintain it and Haas slowly taking control with some steady play.

Blake and Ferrero have just kicked off. Blake has yet to drop a set (fairly impressive considering he played Andreev in the first round) and he really should win this match, but I'm sure he'll be looking to produce some first class choking at some point during this tournament.

I was impressed by Mathieu at last year's FO. I had wanted to see that match rather than what the BBC has dished up but sadly not on BBCi in my area.

Wise_Analyst - June 29, 2007 04:07 PM (GMT)
After my proclamations of doom for Tipsarevic, he promptly broke back when Gonzalez served for the match - the point he won to break serve was absolutely fantastic. He then held serve to even it at 5-5, and Gonzo has just held to go 6-5 up. This could be a cracking final set.

Mathieu a break up in the 4th on Ljubicic - that should be all over now.

Blake won the first set against Ferrero, 6-3, and Haas and Tursunov on serve in the 4th.

SuperBRAT - June 29, 2007 04:07 PM (GMT)
Tipsarevic has impressed me today. I almost backed him for the upset. Now he's clawed it back. Wish I'd gone 3-2 Tipsy in this match, was worth a punt.

Love hsi diferent image too. Like the necklace also :D

petalp - June 29, 2007 04:18 PM (GMT)
Tipsy now up a break 7-6 in the final set!! :o

Can he hold his nerve to serve it out??

Wise_Analyst - June 29, 2007 04:22 PM (GMT)
Excellent win for Tipsarevic... well and truly proved me wrong about not having the belief to win it.

That means the draw has opened up quite nicely for Blake. His response is to go a break down in the second set to Ferrero...

Mathieu sees off Ljubicic in 4 sets, although he did have to save 2 break points as he served for the match.

Haas breaks Tursunov and will now serve for the match.

Manzikert - June 29, 2007 04:24 PM (GMT)
What a famous victory for Tipsarevic! He looked down and out trailing 0-30, 2-5, and here he is with his first top 10 win against the No 5 seed, and going into the fourth round at a Slam for the first time, saving a match point along the way. What a classy service game that betrayed not even a trace of nerves. Things look on course for two Serbs into the last 16 on the men's side as well as the women's now.

Match of the tournament so far I'd think. The two break points to draw back even and then take the decisive lead alone were brilliant. Must be gutting for Gonzalez but I think his opponent simply raised his level at the right moments.

PHM also through 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, 6-3 against Ljubicic. Good on him. I fancy his game as well like others, and thought him capable of the upset, but wasn't sure what to expect with neither player having ever gone past the third round here. I thought Ljubicic had the slight edge coming off his Ordina win and finally looking comfortable on grass but apparently he was quite vulnerable.

Wise_Analyst - June 29, 2007 04:24 PM (GMT)
I don't believe this!

The Tipsarevic vs Gonzalez match finishes, and instead of showing us the end of the Haas match or going to the Blake vs JCF match, which is set up nicely, the BBC show us a replay of the third set of Jankovic vs Safarova. Ridiculous.

chetanpv - June 29, 2007 04:26 PM (GMT)
Tommy may be the dark horse whom nobody is talking about. He is winning his matches efficiently.
JCF is about to level the match against Blake.
But what a choke job from Gonzo. All credit to the Serbian though.

chetanpv - June 29, 2007 04:29 PM (GMT)
I have the same frustrations too. ESPN is showing the booooring Blake vs JCF match instead of Haas-T'nov.

Agreed. Why show an already-finished match instead of an interesting match currently on 'live'?

liam_valid - June 29, 2007 04:33 PM (GMT)
looks like PHM will soon be falling out of Wises choke league. I wonder where he suddenly got a backbone from?

Manzikert - June 29, 2007 04:33 PM (GMT)
I'm starting to wonder about the German No 1 as well. He hasn't really shown any rust on his game despite having been in doubt for the tourney. This is his best result at Wimbledon, surprisingly, never having gone past the third round before. Not sure he can test Federer here (although he certainly did at the AO last year, taking him to five sets) but there is potential for some lovely tennis in their encounter. Either way good on Haas for getting right back into the thick of it on the verge of slipping out of the Top 10.

Wise_Analyst - June 29, 2007 04:33 PM (GMT)
Oh dear. Admittedly they only showed the decisive game of the Jankovic match, before showing us match point between Haas and Tursunov. Instead of going to the intriguing Blake game, they decide to show us doubles with the Williams sisters.

I wouldn't mind but I don't have interactive at work.

Edit: Ignore that nonsense, it's actually Serena playing singles against Sequera. Still a rubbish choice (this will be much more one-sided and of much weaker quality than Blake and JCF), but understandable given their tendency to pander to the 'two week a year' viewers.

PHM was never in my ACP rankings, he's done alright this season.

Blake and Gasquet are miles ahead at the top and the former giving us glimpses of his potential today - he's now a double-break down to past-it clay court specialist Ferrero in the 3rd set. You have to assume he's lost this set, and therefore the match; Blake doesn't win five setters.

Gasquet has been very impressive so far this tournament and is my (very quiet) tip for the Wimbledon crown. He surely can't lose to Vasselin and after that should reach his first ever QF at the expense of Tsonga or Lopez.

Gasquet looks in good nick. Was surprised at how effective he was in beating Mahut.

but you never know with the French players. They certainly add a good degree of unpredictability to both the men's and the women's game..

Pebs - June 29, 2007 04:58 PM (GMT)
 my bloody livestream from the beeb keeps freezing - I only heard JCF winning that set point - the picture was totally still...

Flame - June 29, 2007 05:17 PM (GMT)
ferrero is 4-3* up in the 4th Pebs. surprise to me i must say.

gonzo backers must be jumping off bridges right now. a few mortgages were placed on him at short odds when he broke in the 5th. not mine thankfully.

WimbledonAce - June 29, 2007 05:31 PM (GMT)
Fantastic matches so far today. Gonzo v Tips was amazing, have to say match of the tournament - so many twists and turns!!! He deserves massive praise for coming through 3 5 setters, well done! :ok:
Also huge praise for my fave Haasy, looked really negative after the 1st set and he looked set to retire through injury but this seemed to improve when he started winning :P Well done Tommy - week 2 at last!!!! :yahoo:

petalp - June 29, 2007 05:31 PM (GMT)
Yip.. Tommy has done well! :ok:

Wise I have a feeling Blake will lose some points in the ACP rankings as he is showing some mental strength in the 4th set.
But he has to win in 5, a deed he has never accomplished in his life.
:yikes:

Flame - June 29, 2007 05:37 PM (GMT)
tommy haas did great against tursy but tipsy is definitely the hero of the day putting out gonzo from a seemingly hopeless position.

chetanpv - June 29, 2007 05:43 PM (GMT)
Sorry Wise..
Blake has actually increased his lead in the no.1 position of the ACP rankings

petalp - June 29, 2007 05:43 PM (GMT)
JCF has beaten Blake!!! :o

Bravo Juan Carlos!!

The worst performance by American men at Wimbledon in the open era btw.. Just A-rod left already..

Tie Break in the third...

Verdasco seems to be conspiring to lose this.. gifted a few points to A-Rod

petalp - June 29, 2007 07:56 PM (GMT)
GSM A-Rod.. bit lucky to get that third set though, being 2-5 and a few set points down..

He'll be playing PHM next..

Dinky Jo - June 29, 2007 07:56 PM (GMT)
well, verdasco obviously didn't wanna win that match - some pretty abysmal points in that tie-break

WimbledonAce - June 29, 2007 08:35 PM (GMT)
Well done A-Rod

Tennisveritas - June 29, 2007 08:39 PM (GMT)
What a performance by FED IMO..In the third when it matters the guy was just too hot..Both serve games..  ..It was like see Pete doing the serve twice.. B)

In general the third set was really nowadays 2000-10 tennis at his best: powerful game mixed up with great (delicate) touches. But also great Serves, with magic shots played at the speed of light (there were some returns :yikes: :yikes: )..Great..

It is a shame that Marat did not take grass court seriously enough (well not only that to be honest :( :( )

This guy he has enough talent to be very competitive in this surface..

Anyway..Fed was just magic IMO...
Here some stats:

* 1st Serve % 56 of 86 = 65 %
But in the third when he was under pressure..We saw a 75 % of first serve

* Aces 12 (Once again, 7 of them in the third..when it matters!!!)

Unforced Errors 19 (nothing IMO)

Winning % on 1st Serve 49 of 56 = 88%

Winners (Including Service) 29

Net Approaches 13 of 16 = 81 %

Thanks FED..Great man .. :yahoo: :yahoo:
