Title: Is Safin going to Neutralize the Swiss?

Sam - June 29, 2007 10:59 AM (GMT)
Fascinating and potentially explosive 3rd round match-up today between Federer and Safin - we all know what happened the last time these two met, the question is, can Safin rise to those heights again and pull off a huge shock on Centre Court today? :o

What does everyone think?

Bloody hell you lot why are you more interested in Fed's new jacket than this match today? Get your priorities right roflmao

I think it could happen, Safin has been playing really well. Is worth a gamble! :ok:

vivahate - June 29, 2007 12:15 PM (GMT)
the correct answer is hell no.

obviously you don't want any excitement this wimbledon :P

If the right Safin turns up who knows - a shot at Fed may well appeal to him

Liam, I think that we're polar opposites in terms of players that we like

Fed should win, in spite of you WANTING HIM TO LOSE..

If you want Nadal to win then why not it be Fed in the final rather than want to have Safin to the dirty work for him.? Eh?

Or do you think that Rafa couldn't beat Fed on grass? :P

SuperBRAT - June 29, 2007 03:47 PM (GMT)
Well Safin is one of the few players with a chance of taking Fed out, but only if the full talent of Safin is on display throughout the match. When he beat Fed a few years back at a slam it was on hard. Marat has hardly had an illustrious grass career so I'd have to favour Fed. I'd like to see a 5 set epic tonite though :D

I do have a fear of Safin pulled this off - he'd play crap in the next round and waste his opportunity, which woudl annoy me as I'd rather Fed got another Wimby and extended his grass court streak than have the likes of Roddick or Nadal win this. If MArat wins and then goes on to win th title, I will let him off though. :D

Go Petalp! roflmao

If it were Nadal v Safin in the final, I'd bet on Safin if he got that far.

Btw Petalp I like your sig. Roger looks very funny! Kind of like an academic at his desk. I'm nto mad on the jumper but I'll let him off for playign such great tennis. ;)

Yip.. basically I'd like the winner of this match to win the tournament..

But my avatar maybe gives that game away!

I like one of Serena's recent quotes: "Well, I figured that I was more likely to win the tournament than she was, so thought it best that I should win".. or words to that effect!!

Applying that logic, if Safin is likely to shank a next round (if there is one) then Fed ought to win instead!

Wise_Analyst - June 29, 2007 03:58 PM (GMT)
Safin will need to play the best match he's ever played on grass to beat Federer. I remember him giving the Swiss a decent match in the Halle final one year, so it's not out of the question.

However, I think unless Safin is in the QF onwards stages of a Slam, we can't really keep harping on about how he can beat anyone and everyone on his day - he needs to play himself into form. It really is a shame just how badly he's wasted his considerable talent.

I cant see Nadal beating him in the final, which is why i would rather Safin do the job for him :)

Yes, I like the 'college lecturer' thing going on there.. he looks very 'preppy', doesn't he? The little artefact to his left is perhaps something that he dug up from a recent little field trip of his.. roflmao

Steps, however, would be a different matter
