Folks, who would you nominate for the following daily awards:
Hero of the day
Villain of the day
Best match of the day
Worst match of the day
Shot of the day
(quote of the day is being done on another thread)
My hero of the day = Wayne Arthurs - what a retirement party he's having at Wimbledon, and seemingly getting better with each match - rolled over Robredo in 3 sets, to the delight of his Aussie supporters. Well done Wayne, and keep it up.
Villain of the day = Lopez, for ending British hopes in the singles, although Lopez doesn't really look like a villain (more like a fashion model) and has a great game to watch.
Best match of the day = Davydenko v Guccione was classic grasscourt tennis, a contest between a big serve-volleyer and a great returner. Davydenko did brilliantly coming back from 2 sets down to win...generally Davydenko needs more recognition for how good he is - he's like Agassi, but a more introverted version.
There was a great womens' match between Sugiyama and promising French teenager Cornet - tennis of a very high quality and Sugiyama had to dig deep and use all her experience and guile to prevail.
Worst match of the day = Sharapova v Bremond. On paper, it could have been great - Bremond does quite a bit of serve-volley, and should have been able to trouble Maria with her sliced backhands, but it was a bit of a non-event, with far too many errors from the unseeded player.
Shot of the day = I loved Wayne Arthurs winning shot on match point, running back to retrieve a lob and hitting a rasping passing shot.
Agreed that Kolya should be applauded for his battling victory! Also, I am thinking that this could well be his best ever Wimbledon already... :yikes:
Wayne Arthurs also definitely deserves kudos for his win over Robredo. Interesting matchup against Jonas Bjorkman next. Going slightly off-topic with that one, why is it that for all their sporting interest/ success, all that Aussie supporters can ever seem to sing is 'Aussie Aussie Aussie, oi oi oi'!
Bremond Sharpie was disappointing. Should have been a better match.
Once again, Henman involved in one of the matches of the day though. Very astute strategic 'bathroom break' by Lopez, who upped his game impressively.. :(
Other than the highlights mentioned, did seem to be business as usual for most of the top players.. can't think of any others that merit a special award.
Maybe a notable mention too for Canas, getting through a very tricky match against Max 'beat of Belarus' Mirnyi...
