Title: GIVE US A LONGER GRASS COURT SEASON!

Sam - June 27, 2007 11:27 AM (GMT)
The appeal starts here! :D

It's ridiculous that a surface that encourages the most aggressive, attacking and exciting tennis of the year gets a one month window and just one grand slam, while the dour clay court season we've just dredged our way through gets three masters series, a slam and twice the time!

Make Queens a Masters Series, or maybe Newport!

GRASS RULES!

Weren't all the grand slams played on grass at one time?

Although isn't grass the most difficult/expensive surface to maintain?

I think they were apart from French..

The grass court season should certainly be longer. If Wimbledon were moved further into July this would also allow some players more time to recover after the French. It would mean tournaments like Nottingham would aquire greater significance if it were two or three weeks before Wimbledon.
The French and Wimbledon are far too close to each other, there have been roumers about it moving for years, but nothing ever comes of it.

Yes - but the trouble is that the season grinds on after Wimbledon and you would have to persuade all those other tournaments to budge, possibly with a knock-on effect to the US hardcourt season.

I don't know whether it is feasible - but I do love watching grass now, so many more points end up with someone (or both) at the net, but the balance is just right in that we don't have endless 3-stroke rallies like in the 1990's when, quite frankly, I found men's grass court tennis a total turn-off.
