Title: Murray out of wimbledon

Dinky Jo - June 24, 2007 04:20 PM (GMT)
Not the biggest shock in the world, but here's the official confirmation that murray won't be playing tomorrow:

Injured Murray out of Wimbledon

Great Britain's Andy Murray has pulled out of Wimbledon after failing to recover from a wrist injury.

Murray had left his decision to the last minute in order to give himself the best possible chance of playing.

But after an indoor session at Roehampton on Sunday, the 20-year-old said he feared doing further damage to his wrist if he played.

"The doctor has advised me not to play and that I probably need about 10 days to be ready," said Murray.

"Unfortunately, I don't think it is going to rain for the next 10 days.

"I have done everything possible to get ready for Wimbledon. I have played practice sets the last few days but still cannot hit a topspin forehand properly.

"It has been six weeks of really hard work but I'm not 100% ready.

"The wrist is a very important part of tennis and there are a number of players who have made the decision to come back too soon and ended up with long-term injuries and I do not want to take the risk and make the same mistake.

"I love playing Wimbledon because of the great support I get from the British public and that is what I will miss the most."

Shame but probably the right decision. Will be best for him to be ready for the US. Come on Henman, lol!!!

WimbledonAce - June 24, 2007 04:26 PM (GMT)
Anyone know how this affects the draw?

vivahate - June 24, 2007 04:29 PM (GMT)
lucky loser in murray's place.

ObL!v!0N - June 24, 2007 04:30 PM (GMT)
do you see it on sky sports news too? :P

It's a shame, but I wasn't expecting much of him anyway this year

WimbledonAce - June 24, 2007 04:36 PM (GMT)
I just hope the media are kind. I imagine the organisers at SW are pretty peeved but that's their prob. Is it def lucky loser? I guess that would be easiest at this stage.

WimbledonAce - June 24, 2007 04:39 PM (GMT)
Lol Lapentti gets hauled off to court 13 :P Court 1 are getting Blakey instead, ironic as Blake wanted Murray out, hehe.

It's a pity, but is a sensible decision. No point in trying to play unless he's 100% fit.

look, he does have a sense of humour :o

Seems the most sensible decision. If he had played due to it being Wimbledon and the great British hope etc etc, and then missed most of the hard court season through injury he'd have been kicking himself. He can go and support his brother in the doubles..... :P

SuperBRAT - June 24, 2007 05:18 PM (GMT)
It's a real shame. How dissappointing to come this far since last year and get this seeding and not be able to take advantage of it. :( Still it can't be helped and I'm sure it was the right decision for Andy and something he would not have taken lightly. Shame as Andy had a nice draw and was in Roddick's quarter. Bet Roddick is releived.

Go Tim, take advantage of yoru draw now. :D

He would have been a fool to have played.

I doubt that it was that difficult a decision in the end. He was just hoping for a miraculously quick recovery that didn't happen..

Indeed, I think the media as per have made the decision into a bigger deal for him than it really was. At the end of the day even if he had played it was unlikely he would have progressed far due to lack of match practice, and lets face it his best so far has only been 4th round. There would have been too much expectation and no doubt defeat would have been met with unfair criticism. Sadly this will now be focussed on Tim Henman.
It will be interesting to see how many fairweather fans will now last the course without much British interest. They fail to realise the quality of matches still on offer. Personally I am champing at the bit to see some great matches and I will be delighted with any matches that I am lucky enough to see when I visit. :ok:

Murraynator - June 24, 2007 10:25 PM (GMT)
I really hope Tim makes the second week but i just cant see it happening his game just is not as explosive as it was a few years ago on grass.I really hope he does well though.Come on Tim.....

Ace - June 25, 2007 03:05 AM (GMT)
Awwwwwwwwwww....

I really wanted him to play! :(

Flame - June 25, 2007 09:51 AM (GMT)
at least is shows that andy is smart and thinking in the long term.

i remember a few years back greg rusedski twisted his ankle at queens and decided to play wimbledon anyway. his coach, tony pickard, who had steered the canadian (let's face it) to the US Open final, was so incensed at the greg's pride and stupidity, that he dumped him.

and greg never reached the heights again. there's a lesson in there somewhere.

Good luck Tim!! Any news on the weather? Hasn't stopped raining here today, in fact I think it was last dry on Saturday!

Hey WA :) It was dry all morning here - dry at 8am when I went out, dry out 10.45 when I got back, then it started to bucket down at 11 am! Still drizzling slightly but looks like London is in for a day of on and off showers.

I guess thats what makes Wimbledon. Hope there is some play as it's gutting for people that are going. I'm sure there is someone going from here, can't remember who tho! Fingers crossed for some Tim action!!!

I don't think there was ever any doubt that Muray was gonna miss out on wimbledon - to be honest we should hope he can play by the start of the american hard court season...

Any other player would have pulled out weeks ago, but Andy does seem to be liking his media spotlight more and more...

Dinky Jo - June 25, 2007 12:18 PM (GMT)
"If Murray had pulled out a few hours earlier the draw would have been rewritten. The seeds would have been bumped up and Blake would have become Murray's seed, and Fish would have been brought in as the 32nd seed and avoided Nadal in the first round.

"The lateness of Murray's decision has caused a certain amount of consternation among the Americans in particular."

WimbledonAce - June 25, 2007 01:42 PM (GMT)
C'est la vie! Get over it!

my heart bleeds....

not

unlucky for Andy but clearly he knows what he is about - good to see him not bowing to public pressure to play - and hes got plenty more Wimbledons to attend yet.

And lets go Tim - its all your shoulders once more....
