As there has been a lot of discussion on this topic, I wondered if people would like to assume the role of the Wimbledon committee and issue their 8 wildcards.
Please tell me who you'd give them to and why. Name anyone you like, they don't have to be the obvious. :)
SB, I haven't looked at the seedings in great depth, but I do think that it's a bit rich to give so many wild cards to the 'plucky brits'.
If they want to allocate places to british players then they should have their own qualifying pool, and draw entrants from that. But not just grant them easy access to the draw without being on some sort of meritocratic basis.
I'd revert to a few general principals in issuing wildcards:
- established players who have done well at SW19 in the past
- players who have grasscourt pedigree but have low rankings due to coming back from injury (could also apply to first category)
- young players who have shown promise in the junior tournaments, and may be up for a challenge on the seniors' circuit. Should be careful with this one to avoid the 'Donald Young' factor.
None of this should be Brit-orientated either. The likes of Tim Henman would deserve one on merit anyway, should the situation arise. :)
If/ when Murray/ Ancic pull out of the draw, I wonder if they could allocate a wild card then? Usually it's people who only got so far through the qualifiers, isn't it?
