Title: Womens' qualifiers
MrInvisible - June 19, 2007 09:04 AM (GMT)
Well, the women get down to the tricky business of qualifiers today...keep a watch out for Brits Sarah Borwell, up against Pelletier, Julia Bone against number 3 seed Olga Savchuk of Ukraine, Emily Webley-Smith up against Widjaja of Brazil, Rebbeca Llewellyn against number 13 seed Casey Dellacqua of Australia, Karen Paterson playing Grandin of South Africa, Anna Fitzpatrick versus Namigata of Japan.
Doubles specialist Paola Suarez is also in the draw.
MrInvisible - June 19, 2007 11:06 AM (GMT)
Out on Roehampton Court 15, Britain's Anna Fitzpatrick has taken the 1st set 7-5 against her Japanese opponent Namigata.
MrInvisible - June 19, 2007 11:21 AM (GMT)
Anna Fitzpatrick, who is 18, is serving for the match, now 5-0 up in 2nd set...good start so far for the Brits in qualifying...

This thread is suffering due to competing with the Sharapova for Wimbledon one on The Women's Wimbledon sub-forum. Nevertheless its had 20 viewings so I'll carry on, for now...
Fitzpatrick successfully won her match. Sarah Borwell in action now, first game against Pelletier of Canada.

oops sorry Mr I...
it's just the feeling Maria can arouse...
Baltacha vs. Keothavong at Eastbourne is on Eurosport right now, Bally won the first set 6-2!
GS2 - June 19, 2007 11:40 AM (GMT)
Nice win for Fitzpatrick.
Combined with the Eastbourne results there seems to be a few rays of hope for British ladies tennis.
MrInvisible - June 19, 2007 12:09 PM (GMT)
Borwell serving at 4-5 to stay in 1st set, Alize Cornet, the French girl who won the junior title at Roland Garros, is also playing, on serve so far in her first set...
Do all the men have a day off today, or are some of the mens' matches due to take place later?
GS2 - June 19, 2007 12:13 PM (GMT)
Men's matches are on later.
MrInvisible - June 19, 2007 12:20 PM (GMT)
Borwell in control of the first set tie-break - but can she close it out?
vivahate - June 19, 2007 01:53 PM (GMT)
how is canuck pelletier doing??
canada has one main draw entry for wimbledon in current world no. 92 aleksandra wozniak.
MrInvisible - June 19, 2007 02:21 PM (GMT)
Karen Paterson lost in straight sets to Grandin of South Africa, Borwell beat Pelletier 7-5, 6-0 (sorry Viva!). Emily Webley-Smith lost to Widjaja in straight sets quite badly.
The wonderfully named Julia Bone is 3-0 in her first set, Rebecca Llewellyn is losing 4-1 to 13th seed Dellacqua. Brenda Schultz McCarthy, fastest womens' server, is down a break in 3rd set to her opponent.
As far as the British ladies' are concerned I'd say it was a pretty mixed picture so far. Some disappointments, but some encouraging results too.

How about Bally etc and the other girls at Eastbourne? Do they have WC's into Wimbledon? Is that why they have the luxury of not having to qualify?
I like the win from the plucky Fitzpatrick.. Fellow Sheffielder :D
MrInvisible - June 19, 2007 03:13 PM (GMT)
Yeah, great win from Fitzpatrick, lets hope she can follow it up with another though.
Rebecca Llewellyn lost heavily to Aussie number 13 seed Casey Dellacqua, big serving Dutch Brenda Schultz McCarthy lost in a tight 3 set match to Voracova...in the matches taking place now, Julia Bone lost the 1st set, but hit back to level the match against number 3 seed Savchuk of Ukraine. Savhuck 1-0 up in 3rd set though.

can or did lucic attempt wimbledon qualification??
i know her earlier attempts at a 'comeback' this year have fallen spectacularily short.
MrInvisible - June 19, 2007 03:32 PM (GMT)
Julia Bone's brave fight has ended, losing in 3 sets to a much higher ranked opponent. Not sure if any other Brit ladies are in action in the qualifiers today...if so, here's hoping they can fight their way through round 1 of qualifying...

And what the heck has happened to Dokic these days?
I can't even remember which nationality she finally settled on..
vivahate - June 19, 2007 04:16 PM (GMT)
i do believe she had reverted back to australia, no??
MrInvisible - June 20, 2007 08:15 AM (GMT)
Sarah Borwell and Anna Fitzpatrick both in action today - but both with tough matches - Borwell against number 1 seed Agnes Szavay of Hungary, and Anna Fitzpatrick faces number 8 seed Mathilde Johansson of France. I'd be delighted if one of the British girls makes it through either of those matches, but not expecting too much here...
MrInvisible - June 20, 2007 10:38 AM (GMT)
Sarah Borwell now playing her match against number 1 seed Agnes Szavay of Hungary - Borwell serving at 5-3 down, trying to stay in the first set. Borwell ranked down at 265 whilst Szavay is up at number 70 in the world.
Anna Fitzpatrick lost first set 6-1 against number 8 seed Mathilde Johansson - not looking so good for the Brit qualifiers it has to be said, although they are both up against higher ranked opposition.
MrInvisible - June 20, 2007 11:09 AM (GMT)
Fitzpatrick was soundly beaten by Mathilde Johansson, whilst Sarah Borwell appears to be making a fight of it at least against Szavay - 2-1, on serve in the second set.
MrInvisible - June 20, 2007 12:03 PM (GMT)
Borwell lost 6-4 6-4 in the end, so no British ladies left in the qualifying tournament. With the exception perhaps of following doubles specialist Paola Suarez's results, my interest in the womens' qualifiers is probably now over...
British hopes in the qualifiers now resting on the shoulders of Lee Childs over in the mens' singles...
