Title: Who are your top 5 favourite players on tour?
Description: Active right now

SerenaW19 - June 18, 2007 03:54 PM (GMT)
Im bored and as a few of my favourites have retired recently I thought I'd start this thread.

At the moment my top 5 favourites are:

1: Serena Williams
2: Venus Williams
3: Ana Ivanovic
4: Martina Hingis
5: Lucie Safarova

GS2 - June 18, 2007 03:57 PM (GMT)
Mine are

Justine Henin
Mary Pierce
Ana Myskina
Svetlana Kuznetsova
Jelena Jankovic

If you exclude Pierce & Myskina (since their future looks a little uncertain!)
then Mauresmo & Golovin would sneak in.

liam_valid - June 18, 2007 03:57 PM (GMT)
1. Pierce
2. Petrova
3. Serena
4. Sharapova

Manzikert - June 19, 2007 08:28 AM (GMT)
I'd be hard-pressed to come up with five solid favourites, let alone rank them in any way!

I'm afraid I'm terribly fickle about these things, although in my defence it swings both ways in that I often come round to accepting players whom I mightn't have wanted to see winning initially. (Sharapova in particular won me over with her convincing USO title run, coming as it did against the No 1 and 2 players against whom combined she had held a 1-7 H2H. It's not so much a matter of 'Who will take care of her for us in the SFs this time?' in the Slams anymore as I see her as a credible champion now; I was even glad to see her in the RG semis, and posted to the effect that I wanted her to get there once Mauresmo had gone out, although I didn't quite want to see her go further, mind. :P) But it also cuts the sharp way, as with for instance Mauresmo herself; I was an enthusiastic supporter in her banner year of 2006, but as her star has faded of late so has my enthusiasm - not in a fair-weather sense, mind, as I'd still love to see her do well especially as her Wimbledon defence gears up, but in terms of interest my gaze has moved elsewhere.

Lastly I think I'm a less immediately personal fan of the sport in that I love to track the changing dynamics and emerging narratives of the field, more than prefer to simply see specific players succeed or fail, which isn't to say I don't particularly follow a few more keenly than the rest! For all that I will say currently am most excited about:

Jankovic
Ivanovic
Peer
Vaidisova
Chakvetadze

Yes, I've moved onto the new blood, quite. :P

There are several honourable mentions. Serena had been there (I like both sisters in fact) although as she limped away from RG I'm less interested now, although if she were to get back to the top again I'd be the first to applaud. I was a committed backer of the beleaguered Russians (Kuznetsova, Petrova, and especially Dementieva) but it has been one inconsistent travail too many for me of late, although I would welcome the return to winning ways by any of them; Kuznetsova has obviously been the most in-form of the three but always seems to come up short at the business end of tournies, and accordingly is the only of them to have not won a title this year. I'm pleased to see Hantuchova return to form, whom I confess to having not taken terribly seriously all along; certainly she is one of the cleanest ball-strikers on tour and her game is lovely to watch when she is playing well. I'm keeping an eye on young up-and-comers Azarenka and Radwanska, and Ukrainians on the move Vakulenko and the Bondarenko sisters. Lastly I greatly admire Henin for the excellence of her game and as a ferocious competitor, and would be glad to see her mark the career Slam at Wimbledon; but as she is No 1 and can win well enough on her own I can't say I quite support her elsewhere. I have a fondness for the underdogs, I do.

Oh, and I find I'm missing Hingis quite more than I expected. Got used to having her back around again and watching her style of play is almost like a time capsule in motion. Disappointed she had to miss RG.

If I were to extend the list then, Venus, Justine and Jelena Jankovic, Ana Ivanovic and Elena Dementieva will get thier places.

Can't count on Mary anymore I guess. Same goes to Myskina. They might just retire soon.
