Title: Mahut
MrInvisible - June 18, 2007 10:30 AM (GMT)
Well, like many on here, I had the pleasure of watching Mahut outplay Roddick for most of that match (Roddick's class did tell in that final set tie-break, where he raised his game at the right time). Mahut is like a breath of fresh air - plays grasscourt tennis as it *should* be played. He's got a decent serve, fantastic volleys and great movement. Also, seemed to have a good mentality (withstood all of Roddick's unpleasant gamesmanship antics).
The qualifiers may damage his chances at Wimbledon draw (providing he makes it through qualifiers). Looking at the guy though, he ought to be say a regular 4th round/quarter-finalist with the right draw at Wimbledon. Pebs suggested he's like Henman...well, no disrespect to Henman, but Mahut serve-volleys far more than Henman has done in the latter half of his career. Mahut's grasscourt game seems a cross between Becker and Edberg - Becker's diving and agility, with Edberg's poise on the backhand volley - although weaker groundstrokes than either of them.
Fingers crossed he gets through qualifiers and wins at least a round at Wimbledon, but even if he doesn't, surely he should be in with a shout of winning an indoor title during the European indoor season this autumn...

Spot on for me Mr I. He played terrific grass-court tennis and IMO having held his serve throughout the match deserved the win although fair do's to Roddick. He should get through qualifying in his current form but fatigue may be a factor.
I think he can make a good run at WImbledon provided with a suitable draw and which could see his ranking rise and more automatic entries.

Good news for all you new Mahut fans - he won his first match of qualifying, beating the potentially tricky Israeli Noam Okun. Next up, he plays Joseph Sirianni of Australia...

"you new Mahut fans"?
Well, new or old Mahut fans no doubt pleased that he won R1 of qualifiers.. :ok:
Hopefully he's not carrying any niggles from the A-Rod match, and of course that he makes the main draw :)
Just hope that if he does he doesn't feel knackered by the time that he gets there!!

I LOVED Mahut's play at the Queen's club. Absolutely lovely to watch, and he realyl fought for every last point rolling abotu Beckeresquely. I think he has been robbed tbh. The WIldcards shoudl have been issued later and he should have had one. He must eb knackered and woudl eb better off havign a week off rather than playign qualies. Thing is, if he gets through he might have to face Fed early on again like he did last year.
I do hope he goes far though, his grass game is stunning and he's such a credit to the game. No nasty antics or anything, he just plays hsi tennis.

My sig says it all - if Nic doesn't make it through quali to wimbledon then that will be sad for the tournament. Technically his only challenge in quali is Wes Moodie though...

Mahut now through to final round of qualifying - got to play Simon Stadler of Germany tomorrow (Stadler beat Moodie in 3 sets).

Never heard of Stadler. Moodie is a tough nut though, let's hope he had a bad day cos it worries me that Stadler beat him. Go Mahut! :D
