Title: Eastbourne draw

Manzikert - June 18, 2007 01:59 AM (GMT)
It can be found here.

Seeded QF match-ups:

Henin v Vaidisova
Dementieva v Bartoli
-
Bammer v Petrova
Mauresmo v Peer

At first glance the field is roughly equivalent to what we saw at Tier III Birmingham, despite its higher status as a Tier II. (But it's not entirely unexpected given the scarcity of grass events.) There are two Top 5 players in defending champion Henin and Mauresmo (comparable to Sharapova and Jankovic in the other tourney), but then there is a drop to the sometime-but-not-currently Top 10 duo of Petrova and Dementieva to round out the top four seeds.

Another recently-former Top 10 player in the mix will be Vaidisova, seeded fifth. You would think she has the power game to do reasonably well on grass, but apart from her R16 result at Wimbledon last year (falling in three to Li) she's only won a handful of matches on the surface in her young career. This would seem a good opportunity for her to change that around - especially given how well she did at RG coming in with no expectations at all after her months-long layoff due to wrist injury - but she is unfortunately slated to meet Henin in the quarters. The pair haven't met since 2005 and though she may test the No 1 it will be a big ask for the win. First things first, however, and she will interestingly have a rematch with her third-round RG opponent Stosur, who played her closely for two sets - the equally big-serving Australian doubles No 3 remains 0-4 against her.

In the other quarter of the top half is Dementieva, who reached the quarters of Wimbledon last year. She should be through to meet her RG conqueror Bartoli, but the Frenchwoman is likely to repeat the result as she is coming off a solid run to the semis in Birmingham. Neither woman, regardless, should trouble Henin overly and the Belgian seems to have a relatively clear path to the final.

In the bottom half, Mauresmo will have to hit the grass running, as she is likely to meet Birmingham semifinalist Santangelo in her opening match. An early exit here last year didn't seem to affect her run to the Wimbledon title, but this time round she is sorely lacking for match practice. Even if she meets that test, Peer or countrywoman Rezai (who both showed good form late in the clay season) will be waiting in the wings.

The woman who bested her last year, Dechy, is in the other quarter of the bottom half and is likely to trouble Petrova in her opening match as well. The Russian was in doubt after hurting her back in the course of her RG first-round exit but apparently is fit to play this week; even before that injury, however, she had been struggling for form. She also hasn't played a match on grass since 2005, although she reached the quarters at Wimbledon in her last outing. She has to contend with form players Bammer and Safarova, who share her section, and Kirilenko (who pushed Birmingham champion Jankovic to 7-5 in the third last week) is there as well.

i really don't see anything stopping henin from romping to the title. but if vaidisova wanted to come up with something special, i wouldn't mind.

GS2 - June 18, 2007 11:41 AM (GMT)
Li Na has pulled out with an injury.

Bammer takes her place as the 9th seed and is in turn replaced in the draw by a qualifyer/lucky loser.

SerenaW19 - June 18, 2007 03:33 PM (GMT)
Baltacha absolutely killed Schruff!

61 61 I didn't know British girls could dish out breadsticks :o

liam_valid - June 18, 2007 03:40 PM (GMT)
aand Katie o brian beat craybas 7-6 2-6 6-2

SerenaW19 - June 18, 2007 03:42 PM (GMT)
Well done Katie  surely beating the last person to take out Serena on grass means she must be considered a favourite for Wimbledon now

GS2 - June 18, 2007 03:59 PM (GMT)
Nice work from Katie & Elena! Keothavong is drawn to play a qualifier so we may get a British player into the 2nd round!!

Safarova has just taken the first set 7-6 against Groenefeld. Tougher than I would have expected considering the German's recent form (or lack of it!)

GS2 - June 18, 2007 04:17 PM (GMT)
Safarova leading 7-6, 3-3.

Vaidisova seems to be having problems with her serve - she's already been broken twice - currently Stosur leads 4-3 with a break.

GS2 - June 18, 2007 04:31 PM (GMT)
Stosur took the first set 6-3 but is a break down in the second.

SerenaW19 - June 18, 2007 04:48 PM (GMT)
Vaidisova now serving for the second set.

Safarova needed two tiebreaks to see off Groenefeld.

SerenaW19 - June 18, 2007 05:41 PM (GMT)
Vaidisova wins 64 in the third

Stosur continues her good work :ok:

SerenaW19 - June 18, 2007 07:46 PM (GMT)
Melanie South defeats Alicia Molik saving a match point en route :o :yikes:

Great day for the British Girls

ALG actually served for the first set at 5-3 when the wheels came off, and scoring zero points in a tiebreaker probably reflects her disappointment. I'd like to think that pushing Safarova to 7-6, 7-6 indicates a spark of form coming back to the German, but more probably it was just that the Czech was still adapting to the surface and warming into her first match in nearly a fortnight.

Baltacha and Keothavong have been drawn against each other, so there is that guarantee of a British player into the second round which you suggested (in fact she would be the second to do so). Unfortunately the prize will be an encounter with Vaidisova, who seems to have steadily found some grass form to emerge from a very tight three-setter against Stosur. (Incidentally the Australian appears to have gained some measure of belief against the top players, and seems to have played them very closely of late, which is good to see.) South had a nice steely win in grinding out a third set tiebreaker, coming back from a first set breadstick in the process; I wish it had come against someone other than Molik but certainly a noteworthy victory. And after coming through qualifying successfully, O'Brien may have a winnable first-round match against Bardina, whom countrywoman Cavaday defeated handily last week in Birmingham.

T01 - June 19, 2007 09:54 AM (GMT)
If Katie manages to win her 1st round she will face Dementieva, which is also in theory winnable. So we shall see. Melanie may have a tough opponent if Bartoli comes thorugh. She defeated Daniela Hantuchova in Birmingham last week in a tight 3 setter.

Also Jill has found her way into the main draw as a LL.

chokapova - June 19, 2007 02:04 PM (GMT)
And Baltacha defeats Keothavong so another Brit through to round 2!

GS2 - June 19, 2007 02:47 PM (GMT)
Peer d. Likhovtseva 6-2, 5-7, 6-4

Dechy d. Morigami 6-4, 2-6, 6-3

Nakamura d. Rezai 6-1, 6-4

Bammer d. Kirilenko 6-2, 6-3

vivahate - June 19, 2007 03:37 PM (GMT)
i don't much about her, but what kind of game does bammer bring to the grass?? solid result over a continuing-to-struggle maria kirlenko.

I think Bally's result is a surprise, after defeating Schruff the way she did I would expect her to have comfortably beaten Keothavong? Maybe it's her inconsistency that stops her from breaking the top 100, I think she hits the ball sound enough to be there.
Maybe with her injuries behind her (touch wood) we might see a return to form and an improvement?

A good lefty serve , flat groundstrokes and good net skills. :)

Watched the match earlier! :ok:

Bammer hasnt always had good net-skills. I remember watching her in Linz back in 05, and she was so ungainly in the front-court. However she's persistently worked at her game and her physical conditioning is amazing, a real testament to her work ethic. Her serve could be vastly improved, but her groundstrokes are very technically sound, especially the backhand which has good weight-transference.

I fee sorry for Elena. She's had so many setbacks. A few years back she was looking like breakign top 100, then she had a series of variuses and it was a live rproblem. And now her back! :yikes: Poor girl. I quite liked her spirit a few years back too.

I wasn't expecitng he rto thrash Keothavogn as rekon she'd be knackered.

the brits are doing well aren't they lol

I can't remember the last a british women was on TV, let alone two :yikes:

that was a good match between keo and baltacha, i expected a match full of errors but it was a good advert for women's tennis, let alone british tennis :ok:

although despite all this, they'll probabaly all go out in straights at wimbledon in the first round

GS2 - June 20, 2007 10:38 AM (GMT)
Pretty good days tennis today, especially for fans of the British girls - shame the BBC aren't covering the tournament until tomorrow!

Can't see Baltacha beating Vaidisova and since Bartoli is in good form she should have too much for South but O'Brian has got to be in with a shout against Dementieva since this will be Elena's first match on grass this year and given how vulnerable Elena can be early in tournaments. Since O'Brien went through qualifying and is used to the courts whilst this is Elena's first match in Eastbourne (ever?) then an upset could be on the cards.

Hopefully at the very least all the British women will put up a fight.

As for the other matches, Henin should have too much for Radwanska but the other top seeds could have problems. Peer struggled yesterday against Likhovtseva and here she's up against another strong grass court player in Nakamura.

Dechy hasn't been at her best this year but given Petrova's recent woes an upset has got to be possible at the very least.

Santangelo is just the kind of player that Mauresmo would have wanted to avoid given her recent good form and some good performances on grass so far. On paper this looks tougher than Amelie's opening matches in the last two years and she lost both of those!

The last match between Safarova & Bammer could be a cracker - Bammer looked the more comfortable in her first match be we know what Safarova can be like when she's on. Could go either way - shame they're playing each other actually - I'd quite like both to break into the top 20 soon.

GS2 - June 20, 2007 11:38 AM (GMT)
Vaidisova leading 6-3, 5-2.

Bammer won a very tough first set 7-6(5). On serve in the second.

Manzikert - June 20, 2007 11:47 AM (GMT)
As if the tiebreaker weren't tight enough, there was a bit of suspense at 5-all - Safarova had been awarded set point, but presumably Bammer challenged a call, winning not only that point but the next for the set. Wonder if it'll go to a decider.

Vaidisova wrapped it up 3 and 2. Baltacha's ranking will surely benefit from her performance this week, regardless.

GS2 - June 20, 2007 12:35 PM (GMT)
Justine takes the first set 6-4.

Safarova lost the first set 7-6 but hit back to take the second 7-5 thanks to a single break of serve at 5-5. She's just broken to go into a 2-1 lead in the final set - serving to go 3-1.

Peer has an early break leading 4-2 against Nakamura

SerenaW19 - June 20, 2007 12:45 PM (GMT)
Justine saves a break point on serve to go up 2-0.

Nice to see Aga making a match of it though :ok:

GS2 - June 20, 2007 01:06 PM (GMT)
Bammer wins 7-6, 5-7, 6-3

Justine wins 6-4, 6-1

Manzikert - June 20, 2007 01:28 PM (GMT)
Peer through to the quarters 3 and 2, where she will await the winner of Santangelo v Mauresmo. Good showing considering her narrow escape against Likhovtseva.

Manzikert - June 20, 2007 02:41 PM (GMT)
Despite nobody rating her chances highly, Mauresmo impressively swept past Santangelo 6-2, 6-3. A return to form couldn't be more timely for the defending Wimbledon champion if it indeed is in the offing.

Meanwhile Petrova has also done well under the weight of low expectations so far, leading Dechy 7-5 and hanging even 4-all in the second.

Manzikert - June 20, 2007 03:10 PM (GMT)
Petrova grinds out the second set by reeling off three games from 4-5 down, breaking Dechy as she served for it, then clawing out of 0-40 on her own serve, and nearly letting slip double match point on Dechy's next service game before taking it from deuce for a tight straight sets win of 7-5, 7-5.

All the seeds bar Dementieva and Bartoli have held for their QF match-ups, somewhat of a pleasant surprise. Dementieva trailed 1-3 but has broken back to go 3-all against O'Brien, and Bartoli's match will start shortly.

dl04 - June 20, 2007 04:42 PM (GMT)
Dementieva was pretty laboured today, but pretty convincing in patches. O'brien has some good depth and some solid ball-striking, but its nowhere near good enough to beat Elena, whose hit and move were far superior today. O'brien's serve just went AWOL in the second set, a real indication of how much pressure Dementieva's instills on your serve. At times, you could see how good elena can strike the ball. I hope she has a good grass-season :D

Justine looked fantastic today from the clips i saw against Radwanska. Looking so confident and her movement and net-play looking superb :ok:

chokapova - June 20, 2007 11:01 PM (GMT)
Can't believe all top 8 seeds through to the quarters! :o

Don't think i can recall that happening for a very long time!

GS2 - June 21, 2007 10:59 AM (GMT)
Henin off to a flying start against Vaidisova - winning 4-0 at the moment.

Nicole has only won 31% of her service points so far!

GS2 - June 21, 2007 11:15 AM (GMT)
Typical Justine wobble when leading at 5-0 but she eventually won the set 6-2.

Vaidisova only winning 38% of the points on her first serve
