Title: Biggest upset in your lifetime

Just wondered what people class as the biggest upset in their own living memory in the women's draw, as in a match at Wimbledon you remember watching open mouthed as a contender crashed out?
The one that stands out the most for me was Graf V McNeil, 1st round Wimbledon 94 (I think).
It was a late start for them due to rain and seemed quite damp and cold, Graf was the defending champion and number 1 seed having beat Novotna in the previous years final so no-one expected to see Graf quite comprehensively outplayed. To be fair, McNeil did play out of her skin that day and served and volleyed to perfection, she had a good run to the semi's but was beaten by that Wimbledon legend Chonchita Martinez :P
That always stands out as a strong memory from watching Wimbledon and one that I thoroughly enjoyed with all the drama and tension.

i never liked Graf, so i was hardly upset :P To me, the 'gruntgate' final where Monica shut up and subsequently got trounced was the biggest upset for me :( scandalous behaviour from Moanratilova

I wonder what happened there...
Was she just concentrating that hard on trying not to make a noise or did Graf just outplay her completely, I remember all the furore around Monica that year and it was pretty out of order really, I don't remember watching the match though.
They were just jealous they couldn't beat the girl so they had to try and get at her some way!
SerenaW19 - June 13, 2007 04:55 PM (GMT)
The biggest upset I ever watched live was Venus get beaten by Sprem  GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! :moody:
But that Graf one I think I've seen clips of, and I must agree it really was the biggest upset of all time, Steffi was world number one, three time defending champion, and had until the French Open been holding all 4 Grand Slams.
She was off form I know coming in, but for McNeil to defeat her in straights still must have been a massive shock :o

The thing about it though is that as I remember, Graf didn't play too badly, I remember her getting ehr serves in, her forehand working but McNeil just all over the net and getting to all Graf's passing shots.
I was toying with that one and the Hingis Dokic 1st Round of 2000, was it 2000 or 1999? Anyway's that was another moment where you were just like :o what the heck is going on here. I think Martina got well and truly trounced 6-2, 6-0.
SerenaW19 - June 13, 2007 05:02 PM (GMT)
Truly embarassing moment for Hingis :o
That wasn't a very good year for Steffi despite her great start by winning the AO without losing a set. She got blasted off the court by Pierce at the FO, got outplayed as you say by McNeil and then lost to ASV in the final of the USO to top it off in a tight final set!
Just goes to show anything can happen on a given day....

Wasn't that the year she was also having family difficulty in the background with her fathers tax dealings?

Im not sure, she wasn't at her best for most of 1990-1994 but I think the worst of the father/tax troubles was over by then, I think she was just having form problems more than anything....the tax problems were more in 1991-1992 I think.....

sprem's tainted tiebreak win over venus williams. or jill craybas beating serena william's in straight sets at wimby.
dl04 - June 13, 2007 07:11 PM (GMT)
Sprembledon!!!!!!  :( :moody: :moody:
Controversy from that idiot of an umpire, plus it was a late night match which only fuelled the drama. sprem played the match of her life and then some. Venus had 3 set points in the second set tie-break though :(
I was well pissed off after that loss
Also Hingis losing to Dokic 2-6 0-6. Could hardly believe it, the first time in Wimbledon history the top seed had gone out in the first round to a qualifier. Hingis was mentally drained from RG, and was barely there really
Graf vs Mcneil was the upset of the century really. I've seen highlights of this match, and it seemed like the american just exploited Graf's backhand with her serve-volley game. The whole centre-court was in shock when mcneil landed that last winning forehand volley :o
vivahate - June 13, 2007 10:55 PM (GMT)
yeah, hingis/dokic wimbledon 99...she was not there, and just a couple of weeks after the horrendous RG final
bijusportsfan - June 14, 2007 07:44 PM (GMT)
For me it is Steffi beaten by Lori Mcneil and in the mens side Becker beaten by Peter Doohan (i think that was the name)
lalitha - June 15, 2007 05:17 AM (GMT)
Me too..without doubt has to be the Graf vs Mcneil.Just wasn't Steffi's day..or should I say year although she won the AO
Dark_Necrofear - June 15, 2007 09:24 AM (GMT)
For me Graf and Mcneil 94 and ofcourse Hingis Vs Dokic 99
RT. - June 15, 2007 12:21 PM (GMT)
For me it was Zina Garrison beating Graf in the 1990 semifinal.
SuperBRAT - June 15, 2007 01:54 PM (GMT)
I never Lori beat Steffi but it was a huge shock.
I do remember seeing Dokic thrash Hingis, now that upset was HUGE.

In the Men's game I think the biggest surprise I've seen is when Karlovic turned hewitt over in the first round in 2003.
Women's game? Of one's i've seen i'd rate Dokic beating Hingis as the biggest upset, although Craybas beating Serena Williams was also a great shock ;)
ObL!v!0N - June 21, 2007 09:19 AM (GMT)
i'd say pascual beating hingis in 01 was more of a shock. you could tell that hingis didn't want to be at wimbledon in 99, and duly lost without putting up a fight, or bothering.

Don't agree with that - the Dokic upset was huge stuff whatever way you look at it! ;)
