Title: What classic match would you like to see?

SerenaW19 - June 9, 2007 06:37 PM (GMT)
Well we've had one quasi-classic final this year at Miami, but with anti-climactic GS Finals recently and even the semis it seems are going that way Jankovic/Henin, Clijsters/Sharapova, Sharapova/Mauresmo, I mean wtf was that all about?

Anyway I digress, what great matches and match ups would like to see in the remaining tournaments, especially the slams of the year....

I'd like to see, the development of the Justine/Serena rivalry, perhaps a slam Final....I would like to see Venus fully healthy and fired up finally get some revenge on Jankovic, their matches are always exciting :D Also it would be nice to see Hingis back in the mix in general....

Thoughts.....

petalp - June 9, 2007 06:41 PM (GMT)
I think that Jankovic v Henin has potential. The RG semi final was very disappointing, but I think that it could be so much better.

Of the younger players, Jelena has the game closest to being an all-court player. Just needs to improve her serve!! Maybe also develop the killer instinct too..

So anything involving players with decent all-round games really. I've had enough of baseline bullies in the women's game with no plan 'B' when their plan 'A' goes awry

liam_valid - June 9, 2007 06:45 PM (GMT)
I want to see a S&V match to see how they go against each other after all this time. And i would like Petrova to win wimbledon :)

dl04 - June 9, 2007 06:49 PM (GMT)
I want some more all-williams clashes :D The quality isnt always there, but you see shot-making that noone else can produce ;)

and it would be great to see them team up at wimbledon for the doubles, what do you think the chances are?

petalp - June 9, 2007 06:53 PM (GMT)
Yip, let's all shoeohorn our favourite players into the rivalry that we want to see!! roflmao

Serena v Justine, later in a slam tournament would be nice. When I mean later, I mean the semis at the earliest!

How about a battle royale on grass? :)

fedrules - June 9, 2007 06:57 PM (GMT)
Well, let's hope the Nadal-Fed match tomorrow will be a classic.

They're the best doubles players in the draw when they plan, and they're not even deadly serious about it roflmao

6 doubles titles, won all the major Slams

Well, this is a WTA thread, but here's hoping that their matchup doesn't resemble a women's match on clay, i.e. a non-event ! :P

Whoops, sorry about that.Okay I enjoyed a recent repeat of the 1999 RG final between Graf and Hingis. What a great match that was!

Did you say you wanted more classic between Henin and Jankovic? :P

Seen enough of those chokefests now

They do have compliementary games though for a big rivalry, I must admit, I still doubt Jelena's mentality however.

Also, Serena vs. Peer is a match I always I enjoy :)

That match is much better than the 1992 Final, which was voted the greatest match ever  I mean have people watched that match, Steffi played nothing close to her best until the third set.

I've seen it on tape, it was just an awesome match

ASV was such a player :D

interesting fact alert:

the last 5 matches ASV and Graf played against each other were all slam finals :o and 4 out of that 5 were 3 setters:

1994 US OPEN HARD (O) F A. SANCHEZ-VICARIO 1-6 7-6(3) 6-4
1995 FRENCH OPEN CLAY (O) F S. GRAF 7-5 4-6 6-0
1995 WIMBLEDON GRASS (O) F S. GRAF 4-6 6-1 7-5 2
1996 FRENCH OPEN CLAY (O) F S. GRAF 6-3 6-7(4) 10-8

Williams Finals are so underrated, the only BAD one was the FO Final, all the others were patchy, but the part where they were on, are rallies like no-one else can produce. The 2003 AO final, they were both on for most of it, it was  Serena and Venus at their best going at it :ok:

They're much better than the Belgian borefests to say the least and most RG Finals in the last 5 years for that matter :o

dl04 - June 9, 2007 07:16 PM (GMT)
The AO final was my second best GS final in the last 4 years

Venus could've won the first set and then wrapped it up in the second, but Serena was having none of it  Both were so pumped up, and hit some of the most spectacular shots i'd ever seen.

that was another cracker, although the difference was, you just knew ASV was going to lose, no matter how well she played, she was always on the back foot in the final set. In the FO final you had no idea who was going to win. I miss Aranxta :(

SerenaW19 - June 9, 2007 07:26 PM (GMT)
Interesting stat in 4 or her 6 FO Finals, Steffi Graf came within two games of losing.

i'd like to see a hingis-serena wimbledon final, that goes to a three-set long tiebreak, with hingis winning :D although, that won't happen, unfortunately

I'm expecting something like sharapova v serena in a two-set power battle

although, the reason the fo final was so crap, was mainly becasue ivanovic isn't good enough to win a slam, and given the fact she was so nervous, just showed she's nowhere near good enough, and I did warn you this tournament would be crap before it started

You were dead on the money Bliv I've got to give it to you

At least I got to see Serena play 5 matches though, which at least makes it better than 2006 from my point of view :)

I am literally dying to see another Hingis/Serena match, with Hingis playing well of course, it's time they renewed their rivalry

BIG-TODGER - June 10, 2007 09:41 PM (GMT)
I would love to see the Henin-Serena Rivalry develop, they both have great games, and the women's game really needs this right now-the grandslam finals of late have been pretty poor.
I love Mauresmo's game too, and would love to see her too.
I would love hingis to be in a final at some point, but sadly that isn't going to happen :(

fedrules - June 11, 2007 06:13 AM (GMT)
It's true that the ASV finals were always great as she had such fighting spirit.Maybe it's because I live in Switzerland but my fav RG women's match this year was the Sharapova-Schnyder one.Generally in the women's game I like Justine,Mauresmo,Hingis and Serena.Really not keen on the sour-faced shrieking Sharapova or her tennis.
