Title: Ivanovic vs Henin-The Final

liam_valid - June 9, 2007 11:37 AM (GMT)
I am really apprehensive about this match. I really want Ivanovic to win, but i will be surprised if she tallies more than a couple of games a set. Please Ana, dont buckle under the spotlight here and give us a decent final for once

SerenaW19 - June 9, 2007 11:41 AM (GMT)
I just have to have faith that Ana will produce a good match, she has been so mentally strong lately; yet someone's first Grand Slam Final is bound to be somewhat of an ordeal. Yet people have actually thrived under pressure in their first Grand Slam Final before now, Steffi Graf, Serena WIlliams, Maria Sharapova...who knows.....

You've got to assume the match is ultimately in Henin's hands though...should be interesting :) Please win a set Ana

vivahate - June 9, 2007 01:08 PM (GMT)
me thinks justine will steamroll...but yes, please give us some semblance of a match.

neither of these players are my fave, and i wouldn't mind seeing either win. although watching justine play these last two weeks, it has been nice to see her smiling...a lot :)

What's happened to Martina Viva? Why does she feel violated?

Dinky Jo - June 9, 2007 01:18 PM (GMT)
double fault from Henin gives Ivanovic the break to go 1-0 up!!! :)

SerenaW19 - June 9, 2007 01:19 PM (GMT)
The match is already more competitve than the last four finals roflmao

petalp - June 9, 2007 01:24 PM (GMT)
I know that Justine takes a lot of inspiration for her game from Federer, but shanking a few forehands and having one's serve broken early on in the match are perhaps not the things that she should emulate!

petalp - June 9, 2007 01:39 PM (GMT)

vivahate - June 9, 2007 01:40 PM (GMT)

Even with JH having won 4 games in a row now, I'd still agree!! roflmao

SerenaW19 - June 9, 2007 01:42 PM (GMT)
I bet Mary would much rather give the trophy to Ana than Justine

Definitely.

You could almost pinpoint the moment when she started to think too much about the occasion and what she was doing.. it was when she had that dreadful ball toss.. also being an early break and 40-0 up maybe that got to her too?

Anyway, was downhill from then on. Justine goes from 0-1 and 0-40 down to win the set 6-1..

petalp - June 9, 2007 01:49 PM (GMT)
Darn.. Sam Smith just said exaclty the same!

*checks room for bugs*

Manzikert - June 9, 2007 01:49 PM (GMT)
I switched off the match. Ugly, ugly, ugly.

Ivanovic started so splendidly, swinging freely and cruising to 1-0, 40-0 with triple game point to consolidate her break. She threw a dodgy ball toss, which gave her time to think about the occasion, and it's been one-way traffic since then. Can't seem to get a first serve in (possibly her biggest weapon this past fortnight) nor keep the ball in the court. They might as well replay the Pierce or Dementieva finals. I sympathise with Ivanovic, but I don't need to see another rout.

Another thrilling final at RG

I know Justine is quite exceptional on clay, but so was Chris Evert, we still had classic finals...I think it is turning into quite a problem that we're not having competitive matches at RG anymore past the fourth round quarters....

I think that classic matches have been thin on the ground in general at RG this year.

Sharpie v Patty was one, but that was about sheer drama rather than quality.

Then Anabel M-G v Dani Hantuchova another. But I'm struggling beyond that..

SerenaW19 - June 9, 2007 01:54 PM (GMT)
Poor Ana...just give Justine the trophy now! Thank goodness I was already in Wimbledon mode otherwise this final might have been a disappointment

In fairness, I think that classic matches have been thin on the ground in general at RG this year.

ugly tennis from ana :o

She is in danger of trying too hard, tensing up and thrashing the ball around..

I'd heard that she'd been described as the new Clijsters.. I thought that this was meant to be when Kim's game was 'on' rather than, say RG 2003!

SerenaW19 - June 9, 2007 02:00 PM (GMT)
The thing is after she broke in the first, Ana put no pressure on Justine, this has allowed Justine to get completely into her stride and more important serving a lot more confidently and getting more first serves in, best day of the tournament for her over 60%.

Even if Ana gets back to her semi final level, there's virtually no way back for her now.

vivahate - June 9, 2007 02:01 PM (GMT)
i don't see much of a fight coming from ana...although she just held serve for the first time in the match

petalp - June 9, 2007 02:03 PM (GMT)
Ana hold serve for the first time.. in game 10 of the match!!

Breaks Justine's run of 8 games in a row..

If her forehand fires and serve percentage goes up then she could find a way back into this, or at least make the final scoreline more respectable. Justine looks in no mood to give points away.

petalp - June 9, 2007 02:05 PM (GMT)
erm.. when was the last time that Henin and Federer both won slams at the same tournament?? Usually one wins and one loses, don't they..

Justine's forehand is looking as good as I've seen it for a long time..

Yep when Fed wins Justine is holding the runner up dish and vice versa

vivahate - June 9, 2007 02:07 PM (GMT)
hey ana, hit a winner

Dinky Jo - June 9, 2007 02:09 PM (GMT)
oh dear, another break for Henin :( Ana just looks so defeated now..... :(

SerenaW19 - June 9, 2007 02:09 PM (GMT)
I've switched it off, Liam will be pissed  What a dire final!

Damp squib.

I probably won't turn off, as there's probably only 10-15 minutes left of this anyway.

Poor Ana.. bit of a car crash of a match for her.. :(

trisco - June 9, 2007 02:11 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I've also left the TV downstairs...

Can't watch when it is like this. Poor Ana.

Who will beat Justine at RG??? Maybe if she has a daughter by the time her daughter is old enough she may just wrestle the trophy away from a 45yr old Henin.. lol

vivahate - June 9, 2007 02:13 PM (GMT)
eek, who died worse v. justine in the last 3 finals...ana...mary...kuzzy??

Dinky Jo - June 9, 2007 02:15 PM (GMT)
:yahoo: Ana holds serve - but surely this must all be over in the next game?

petalp - June 9, 2007 02:16 PM (GMT)
Ana holds serve to force Justine to serve for the championship..

Erm, that's about as dramatic as it gets, methinks..

6-1, 5-2. ho hum.

chokapova - June 9, 2007 02:19 PM (GMT)
And Justine gets Grand Slam Number 6! :D

One more than Venus and Hingis and twice as many as Davenport.
The Williams-Davenport Mafia won't be happy! roflmao

petalp - June 9, 2007 02:19 PM (GMT)
Justine keeps the ball in court to take the match 6-1, 6-2

Bravo Justine!! Easily the best player on clay in the women's game.

Ana :(

Right, I'm off out.. A bientot.. :)
