Title: Doubles (Mixed, Men's, Women's) Round-Up

Manzikert - June 8, 2007 02:46 PM (GMT)
Roland Garros has got its home champion, as Dechy/Ram won the mixed doubles title in convincing fashion 7-5, 6-3 over Srebotnik and Zimonjic (the latter being a fourth Serbian semifinalist here, not only in mixed but men's doubles as well). Well done to the Frenchwoman and Israeli. It proved a good pairing, since Dechy won last year's USO women's doubles title and Ram won last year's Wimbledon in mixed - both of them partnered with the same player in Zvonareva. And now they've enjoyed Slam success together after eliminating the middlewoman, as it were. B)

Both the men's and women's doubles draws saw remarkable upsets of its top two seeds prior to the final:

--No 1 seeds the Bryan brothers, last year's finalists, and No 2 seeds Bjorkman/Mirnyi, defending champions, all went out in the quarters. It will be the Czech duo of Dlouhy/Vizner facing off against Knowles/Nestor, the latter reaching their third RG final and hoping to come away with the trophy this time.

--No 1 seeds Stosur/Raymond and No 2 seeds (and this year's Australian Open champions) Black/Huber both fell short in the semis. It will be an unlikely match-up of No 7 seeds Srebotnik/Sugiyama against No 17 seeds Molik/Santangelo in the final taking place later today.

I swear I read an article that said Knowles and Nestor plan on ending their partnership after the French... I wonder whether they still will if they win the title?

I've also seen that. It's certainly been a longtime partnership so I can see why they might want to try new avenues. I was there in person to see them win the title in AO 2003 after the Williams sisters final took place, so I've kept one eye on them since. I think a title here would be the best way to draw things to a close if it came to that - going out on top, in a way.

Santoro/Zimonjic are also parting ways, which is why it would have been interesting to see them in the final as well - not just as a last shout but because Nestor will work with Zimonjic next, reportedly! Would have made for an odd dynamic there.

I had a nagging doubt after posting, and actually Knowles/Nestor were runner-up to Llodra/Santoro in that match. I guess my recollections aren't as great as I thought. It was the first doubles match I'd seen up close though so the action left an impression on me, if not who actually won. Heh.

Molik and Santangelo won the title in two tight sets 7-6(5), 6-4. It's Molik's second Slam doubles title, her first coming on home soil at the AO in 2005 just before her extended absence from the tour due to health issues. It's the first Slam title of any kind for Santangelo (in fact she hadn't been past the QFs in either draw prior to this result), although she did win alongside Dechy in Rome so seems to have continued her good form going into RG.

Well done to both women. It's especially nice to see Molik lift a trophy after her struggles.

I'm glad Alicia took the title and Mara's help shows how she is moving in the right direction.

I feel sorry for Kata Srebotnik who lost in the Womens and Mixed finals :(

Well, they won the title!

The only one that they haven't won is Wimbledon.. and that will be their last tournament..

Would be a great way to sign off by competing the career slam, wouldn't it? :)

Indeed! It was a competitive final also, won 6-4 in the third. Well done to both men.

Like Russiafan I was under the impression that RG was to be the last of their partnership, but it seems their swan song has been pushed to Wimbledon instead. It will be a big ask for the title there, I think, but I hope they make a good showing of it regardless.
