Title: What was Roddick thinking!!??
Tennis_Mad_Andy - June 7, 2007 12:35 PM (GMT)
I dont know if any of you have seen this news story on BBC sport about him playing in the doubles event of the Surburbiton challenger but I have to say that he showed no respect for anyone at that tournament.
This is a qoute from that article...
"Andy Roddick appearing in the doubles at the Surbiton Challenger seems akin to Brad Pitt stepping on stage in an amateur dramatics production.
Unfortunately, this is exactly how the world number three seemed to view his debut in the first tournament of the grasscourt season as well.
Roddick had originally been expected to arrive at the Surbiton Racket and Fitness Club at midday, but turned up three-and-a-half hours late, just 40 minutes before he was due on court on Wednesday. "
"And seconds after he and partner Robby Ginepri limply lost 7-5 6-1 to Australians Chris Guccione and Nathan Healey, A-Rod jumped into a waiting car and sped away."
That's just plain lack of respect surely? He loses a doubles match in a challenger and then just speeds away as if nothing happened and like he couldn't care less about it.

You are spot on andy ;)
he has forfeited his prize money anyway and will get a fine - but I think A-Rod needs to watch his step, he is certain;y not all sweetness and light.
I mean, last year he got given a load of cards with drawings on by kids as a publicity stunt - as soon as the cameras went he screwed up and dumped the cards in a bin :o

What a tosser! He may have had his reasons to turn up here but that just shows total disrespect for the others in that event. Good on the guys who beat them, how embarrassing! roflmao

You forgot the best part of the article!
| QUOTE |
Although his serve was as fearsome as ever, he was hopelessly out of touch at the net and his groundstrokes were wayward.
After he missed yet another volley in the second set, his partner, Ginepri, looked toward the crowd and said: "I need a new partner. Is there anybody?" |
Mind Ginepri is no force of nature at net either. Or anywhere on court, these days!
Roddick actually won a doubles title in Indianapolis last year, but this seems a quixotic attempt that was probably forced on him by Connors, to judge from his perfunctory attitude. Hanley is a class doubles specialist and Guccione hits a towering serve so I'm not surprised they took it.

I thought it said Healy, not Hanley? If ti were Hanley then indeed I'd expect him to win. Wasn't he with Ulyett for a long time?

Yes, it was Healey. I was reading it too quickly and he's the first Aussie doubles player that leapt to mind, but of course it doesn't stand to reason that a Top 10 doubles player would be playing a challenger event as I realised not long after making that post. And yes, outside of Davis Cup for obvious reasons, Hanley partners pretty much exclusively with Ullyett.

What a swine  roflmao
Roddick is so hapless at the net, i'm not suprised Ginepri wanted to throw the towl in roflmao

Just for the record the rumour about the birthday cards was proved to be incorrect. Video footage was studied and a subsequent apology was printed by ace magazine. B)

Well done for setting the record straight Ace. I was sure Roddick wouldn't have done something as heartless as that!

It might be true that he did not do it, but an apology by Ace does not prove anything. I am surprised they would come with such story without base in it.
Having said that, I don't think it is particularly mean. Just bad taste...from ACE. It is clear that Roddick has other things to do than keeping all those cards. If Ace hadn't said he threw them in the bins, the kids would have still been pleased and that is all that matters. Would you really, if you were famous, and keep all cards from your fans? I would not. What he does with the cards is his business and should not have been published.
TennisMenace - June 8, 2007 02:15 AM (GMT)
I agree Tenez. Also, it's a bit harsh slamming him for getting into a car and leaving straight after his loss - what do you want him to do, sit around crying and then walk around the centre shaking hands with every other player and wishing them the best of luck for the rest of the tournament? I doubt that post match interviews are a necessity at the Surbiton Challenger - it was hard enough getting the media interest in the first place for the last Challenger I was involved in, so he's actually helping the Challenger circuit and it's profile by being there at all. At least we hear about the Surbiton Challenger because he was there!

I think you will find it was true. Someone said they thought they saw him putting them in a bin but he was in fact putting them in his pocket and there were pictures.
I think A-Rod is a pretty spot on guy, he is always warm and humorus even after bad losses. Can't wait to see him on J Ross later :P
