Title: Day 10 - Tuesday June 5

chetanpv - June 5, 2007 11:17 AM (GMT)
Match of the day is Canas - No Weapons
Federer should win comfortably.

TeamJustine - June 5, 2007 01:39 PM (GMT)
Fed a break up. *yawn*

barrystar - June 5, 2007 01:39 PM (GMT)
Fed wins the first game, breaking Robredo's serve from 30-0 down.

Not a good start for Robredo.

barrystar - June 5, 2007 01:41 PM (GMT)
Fed nails the break home for 2-0, winning serve to love.

Gav - June 5, 2007 01:45 PM (GMT)
Robredo holds serve but Fed leads 2-1 with a break and quite frankly if Fed doesn't win this in straight sets I will be very surprised.

barrystar - June 5, 2007 01:47 PM (GMT)
30-30 on the Federer serve - are we going to see a reappearance of the Monaco/Rome Federer?

barrystar - June 5, 2007 01:49 PM (GMT)
Fed saves a bp and at times he is serving slower than Henin was.

TeamJustine - June 5, 2007 01:49 PM (GMT)
deuce on fed serve - please break back

Gav - June 5, 2007 01:50 PM (GMT)

You never know. Robredo breaks back. 2-2.

chetanpv - June 5, 2007 01:52 PM (GMT)
Fed is playing Boredo like he was in Australia. Maybe the bore needs to win the first set to wake Federer up.

TeamJustine - June 5, 2007 01:56 PM (GMT)
Robredo is doing a lot of running though.

It will be solid to keep that going!

Part of Fed's gameplan i guess.. This is how he likely wants to beat Canas and Nadal ultimately; make them sweat early in the match so it will pay off in the latter stages.

bit of wishfull thinking.. ;)

barrystar - June 5, 2007 02:17 PM (GMT)
7-5 in the first to Fed - but the points tally of 38-35 shows that it was anything but a tight set.

Unless Fed goes walkabout I would expect him to want, and be able, to finish this off quickly.

Fed is now 3-0 down in the second

barrystar - June 5, 2007 02:28 PM (GMT)
Looks like a walkabout by "monaco-man", he's being steam-rollered in this set so far. His first serve has gone awol - down to 14%

:chesire:

drakey01 - June 5, 2007 02:32 PM (GMT)
Fed finally gets a game in the second.

Meanwhile DD v Canas is 5-5 in the first, I think this is the first time Canas has been properly tested.

EDIT - stat of the match so far:

Unforced Errors: DD 29 , Canas 2

Could be in for a long haul

barrystar - June 5, 2007 02:36 PM (GMT)
Robredo 4-1 up in the 2nd set, looks like an absolute 'mare from Fed. He has got 2/17 first serves in!

drakey01 - June 5, 2007 02:40 PM (GMT)
Fed broken again :o :(

Davy has set point against canas, and takes it - could we see a Robredo v Davydenko sf?

Gav - June 5, 2007 02:42 PM (GMT)
Fed 5-1 down? This may be worth watching after all!

TeamJustine - June 5, 2007 02:44 PM (GMT)
Are the line judges have a shouting/screaming competition??

2 set points Robredo....one saved from fed....and another - deuce

MrInvisible - June 5, 2007 02:45 PM (GMT)
Well, I've got to admit its been about time Robredo stepped things up and challenged the likes of Fed and Nadal. He's an excellent player who certainly does not deserve his 'boring' tag or even 'journeyman' tag, but has continually underperformed against the big two and other top 10 players.

Sounds like he's at least making a contest of it against Federer, even though Fed himself is doing his best to help him out!

TeamJustine - June 5, 2007 02:49 PM (GMT)
good game here....been deuce a couple of times and Robredo has had 5 chances for the set!

Gav - June 5, 2007 02:50 PM (GMT)
6-1 to Robredo? Can of whoop ass time....

barrystar - June 5, 2007 02:52 PM (GMT)
Titanic struggle at 5-1 before Robredo holds his serve in a game full of dueces.

Which Fed will come out for the third set, a man who can get his first serve in, or a man who cannot?

Pat Cash was saying that Fed's poor serving was letting him down this year, and this match so far is showing (according to the stats anyway) how important a high first serve percentage is to Fed's game. If he can't eke his way back up to at least a 50% first service percentage (28% in the last set!) he's on his way home.

drakey01 - June 5, 2007 02:53 PM (GMT)
There goes Fed's straight-sets-victories-at-slams streak in dramatic style. Hopefully Fed will wake up a little now, I don't think he can beat Nadal in the final but I want him to get there at least.

Meanwhile, DD is up a break against Canas in the 2nd

barrystar - June 5, 2007 02:58 PM (GMT)
Fed 2-0 up in the third with a break - is this normal service resumed?

Does Nadal ever go AWOL?

Well he did in the Hamburg final I guess....

Well I am kind of torn now....I would like to see a Nadal Fed final too, but    ..would also like to see Robo win in style here.

Oh dammit ' Go Robo'

barrystar - June 5, 2007 03:02 PM (GMT)

That's my point - Fed had to play well to beat Nadal, even if the latter was a bit off colour, but the stats suggest that Fed threw that set away with some pp serving. I am not sure that (on clay at least) Nadal ever loses without making the other guy play well. I guess it's difficult to know given that he has only lost twice in the last 2 years.

Answer: an absolute monster who has powered to 5-0 in 15 minutes.

EDIT: and won 6-1 in 20 minutes.

Who next, Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde?

MrInvisible - June 5, 2007 03:23 PM (GMT)
Well, Federer will definitely prefer playing Davydenko in my opinion. Losing twice in successive tournaments to Canas means Federer would want to avoid him. If Davydenko does win, then it caps a slightly disappointing tournament for the Argentinians - lots of players in 2nd and 3rd round, but just one player in quarter-finals, and none in the semi-finals.

fah51 - June 5, 2007 03:34 PM (GMT)
Davy takes second set :o

Gav - June 5, 2007 03:37 PM (GMT)
Fed wins it in the end. But that second set drop in form is certainly very odd.

Well done Fed.....in the end!

MrInvisible - June 5, 2007 03:39 PM (GMT)
Maybe Fed was given an offer he couldn't refuse from someone who'd bet on v good odds on a Fed 3 sets to 1 win...(only joking!!!!)

barrystar - June 5, 2007 03:40 PM (GMT)
Fed wins in 4 sets in just over two hours: 7-5, 1-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Looks like he will be playing Davydenko, who has taken over two hours to win the first two sets.

A rest day tomorrow should mean that they are both pretty fresh.

Fed should win, but he cannot afford to go walkabout like in the 2nd set today against Davydenko, let alone Nadal in the final.

Nadal remains the strong favourite IMHO

Nah. Fed, after breaking this silly record of most consecutive sets won in Slams, drops a set, so the press will shut up about such silly things, then goes on to close out the match in style to reach the RG semifinals for the third straight year. :ok:

Nick Havoc - June 5, 2007 04:11 PM (GMT)
Davydenko looks set to close out Canas in straight sets. He had a couple break points to get it to 5-2 in the third, but back to deuce now.
