Title: Day 8 - Sunday 3rd June
petalp - June 3, 2007 09:37 AM (GMT)
Well, Serena is dominating Safina so far.. 5-1 up in the first set with only 20 ish minutes played..
petalp - June 3, 2007 09:53 AM (GMT)
Serena takes the first set 6-2..
Safina has been pretty demonstrative about her play so far, in true family tradition.. She seems to be having one of those days, where she couldn't hit the back of a bus..
And Serena promptly breaks in the first game of the second set.
petalp - June 3, 2007 10:01 AM (GMT)
Vaidisova is making short wqork of Garbin, leading 6-3, 3-0..
With Volandri starting badly, the Italians are not having a good morning..
Safin may well have woken up!! She breaks back, and is starting to show some fight..
mightyjeditribble - June 3, 2007 10:14 AM (GMT)
Yep, looks like Safina is doing well. She's really back into this match now, and the Russian mutterings have stopped. Are you watching, Marat? :P
As soon as I write this, she's back in trouble, facing break points. And broken she is.
petalp - June 3, 2007 10:20 AM (GMT)
And Safina breaks back to love!! :o
She played a terrific game there, full of fight and some fabulous court-play. Needs to hold her service game this time I would think as breaking back against Serena is usually not an easy thing to do too regularly..
The quality of the tennis has definitely improved though.. is enjoyable to watch now :)
mightyjeditribble - June 3, 2007 10:21 AM (GMT)
Safina breaks back for 3-3. Now she's down 0-30 again.

Well, Safina undoes all her good work, as she gets broken again for 4-3. And we're treated to a montage of her Russian mutterings and racquet throwing. Can you spot the family resemblence?

Serena's turn to break to love..
Safina will need to up her game once again to keep in this match, methinks..
mightyjeditribble - June 3, 2007 10:26 AM (GMT)
Serena one game away from the match. Safina hasn't held serve many times in this match, unless I am mistaken. Can she do it here to stay in the match?
petalp - June 3, 2007 10:26 AM (GMT)
Vaidisova has despatched Garbin pretty easily, 6-3, 6-1..
A Jankovic v Vaidisova matchup would be worth checking out :)

Probably not. 15-40 now. Two match points for Serena.
mightyjeditribble - June 3, 2007 10:29 AM (GMT)
GSM Serena. 6-2 6-3.
Dinara was never really in this match.

Serena played well though, and really was far superior..
Bodes well for the (potential) match with JHH :)
petalp - June 3, 2007 11:21 AM (GMT)
... and speaking of which, JHH has already broken Bammer in the first game of the match..
Kuzzy has taken the first set against Peer, 6-4..
petalp - June 3, 2007 11:35 AM (GMT)
Sveta now 4-0 up in the second set.. looks on for completion of yet another routine straight sets win in the women's draw..
petalp - June 3, 2007 12:06 PM (GMT)
Sveta beats Peer 6-4, 6-3
JHH took the first set against Bammer 6-2, and is now 3-0 up in the second already.. :yikes:
Another straightforward, straight sets win then..
Kind of puts the Jelena v Vee match into perspective.. far too early for that sort of contest.
petalp - June 3, 2007 12:27 PM (GMT)
Sybille showing some fight.. recovers one of the 2 breaks that she is down against Justine..
4-3, 2nd set..
petalp - June 3, 2007 12:53 PM (GMT)
And to the surprise of no-one, JHH beats Sybille Bammer 6-2, 6-4
So it's the 'JHH v Serena' show to look forward to... :ok:
petalp - June 3, 2007 01:06 PM (GMT)
Ivanovic takes the first set against Anabel M-G, 6-3
petalp - June 3, 2007 01:33 PM (GMT)
Jankovic and Bartoli now on court..
Jelena shows her class too break Marion's serve in the first game of the match :)
petalp - June 3, 2007 01:49 PM (GMT)
Anabel M-G takes the second set against Ana 6-3..
petalp - June 3, 2007 01:50 PM (GMT)
So, there are a lot of WTA fans on the board today? roflmao
Must be all studying for their exams ;)
mightyjeditribble - June 3, 2007 01:55 PM (GMT)
I saw Bartoli play live when I was in Japan; she's a good player. However, it is hard to see her being able to keep up with Jankovic. She did well to stave off those break points there, though ... but here's another one.
mightyjeditribble - June 3, 2007 01:57 PM (GMT)
Sorry, that message was delayed because of my internet connection --- in the meantime, Jelena has broken again, and now surely on her way to an easy win. Although I shouldn't speak too soon given the comebacks we've seen ... but somehow I don't think Bartoli has got one in her.
petalp - June 3, 2007 02:03 PM (GMT)
Have seen Bartoli play too.. I like her, good groundstrokes.. have seen Jankovic play too...
Jelena has far too much class for Marion here though.
I think that Marion has been moved around the court so much by Jelena, that i'd bet that this has contributed towards her injury timeout.. She has done so much running already just to try to keep with Jelena..
mightyjeditribble - June 3, 2007 02:09 PM (GMT)
Jelena's charming the crowd with her serves during Bartoli's injury break.
She could be a great crowd favorite at Wimbledon, couldn't she?

The commentators were just saying how Jankovic can use the crowd as a weapon here.
I really like her... hadn't seen too much of her before today but she's won my heart. What a fantastic attitude.
She hasn't quite replaced my one true love just yet though, despite Ana's attempts to mess things up against Garrigues. She lost the second set, but is 5-2 up in the third and should come through now

Definitely.. :ok:
One of my favourite players.. hence her being in my avatar :)
Wise_Analyst - June 3, 2007 02:25 PM (GMT)
Ana through! 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
She had me worried for a while there though. Kuznetsova will start the QF big favourite :(
petalp - June 3, 2007 02:25 PM (GMT)
Ana takes the third set 6-3 to beat Anabel M-G
THe Jelena v Marion game really just going through the motions..
So.. Jankovic v Vaidisova in the quarters :)

There's the slight incentive that whoever wins that QF has a great chance of making the final.
And that's just one match and who knows??
petalp - June 3, 2007 02:31 PM (GMT)
Some great courtplay from Jelena here.. lots of lovely angles, mixing things up wonderfully..
A real pleasure to watch (even if a non-contest) :D
mightyjeditribble - June 3, 2007 02:31 PM (GMT)
Bartoli has loosened up a bit, and seems to be going for a shot a bit more. I think she would deserve avoiding the bagel here.

Shame it hasn't been more of a contest. Bartoli has beaten Jankovic before, but Jelena's game has just improved out of sight in the last 12 months :D
GSM Jelena, 6-1, 6-1

And with the injuy, there was no chance of even making it a contest. Jelena must be pleased to have gone through so quickly.

Ana definitely can win this, but she'll have to play her best stuff. She beat Kuz in the Berlin final despite being injured in the final set (although the Russian was fatigued due to her fixture pileup). Going by the last matches though, a comfortable straight sets victory over Peer bodes a lot better than a struggle against Garrigues. Kuznetsova's been here and done this before too - Ana's only got to a Slam QF once before (here at RG in 2005). It'll be a great test of her character, that's for sure.
Just checked the H2H and Ana leads it 2-1, so I'm feeling a tiny bit more confident :)
Well done Jelena  I'm rooting for an all-Serb final :D

MJT, I think that Jelena would have won comfortably anyway.
Marion needs more of an all-court game to challenge Jelena I think. She does not like going near to that net, and you have to have the height, power and wingspan of someone like Sharapova to not have that as too much of a liability..

Yip, I think that the Ana v Sveta QF could be a good match.
So a difficult one fo pick, but I wouldn't be surprised if it went to 3 sets. But as you mentioned, Ana has to play well to win it. Conversely Sveta will also have to play well to beat Ana, who has been showing some good form of late, and must be feeling confident of winning this one..
An all-Serbian final? I'd be happy with that too.. :ok:
petalp - June 3, 2007 03:19 PM (GMT)
Sharpie v Peppermint Patty now..
