Title: Day 5 - Thursday 31st May

Dinky Jo - May 31, 2007 10:44 AM (GMT)
Hewitt down a set and a break to Gaudio

Djokovic has just dropped the second set to the Frenchman Recouderc

Baggy is running away with his match against Pless - up 2 sets to love

Tenez - May 31, 2007 11:03 AM (GMT)
What a nice a BH this Gaudio has. He is about to give up his tennis career cause he hasn't got an good results this year but it would be a shame. I can see why he has underperformed. His FH is average and he is not moving as well as others but a nice guy.

Thanks..

Still he is not finished yet and Hewitt is able to come back :(

3-1 in the third for Hewitt in the third

SuperBRAT - May 31, 2007 11:19 AM (GMT)
I thought everyone was saying that Gaudio was past it an Hewiit would trounce him? Must say my intial thoughts were a tight match, but then having heard the form I plumped for an easy win for Hewitt.

It seems now that Gato is back to his old nightmares and he decided to stop playing...This guy with the BH he has :( :( ...

I will open a thread one day: Is the fact of having a great BH a problem to become a great player (OK Guga was an exception)? ..Look now: Gasquet a great BH nad yet out in misery; Gato one of the best one hand BH; he is always in trouble with himself...Safin...Man...

There should be something here..To investigate

Definitely something to investigate. :)

I'm not a huge fan of clay court (prefer grass) but form what a recall Gaudio was a very good player, and certainly entertaining and tough when he won it.

Anyway Hewitt has done a come back, nice to see he still can scrap. :ok:

Hi SuperBRAT ;) ..Same situation: I prefer grass by far but the Grass season is so short. :( :( ..So we have to follow clay...And there Gato was definitely a good player..But now he is doing his n+1 suicide ( like Marat) ...

Hewitt will now win in the fifth...

Gato, this man I tell you BH and great champion well does not fit together..

Anyway...Even if I do not like his game Congrat to Hewitt :(

Tenez - May 31, 2007 12:51 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I am not a big fan of hewitt and his game but when he faced Rafa last week in Hamburg, it was quite interesting to see him become suddenly the risk taker. It was one of the best match on clay so far with possibly Davydenko Rafa. Besides these 2, the clay season was average.

Yes I do prefer grass too but clay is now really getting interesting because we have one guy dominating (Rafa if it needed to be specified) and quite a few aggressive players trying to take it of him.

Also, on grass and hard there is only one winner for now and clay provides a challenge for Fed that yuo cannot find on the other surfaces. Let's take Wimbledon for instance, bar an injury, it is again in Federer's hands. The same thing cannot be said of clay.

SO as much as i prefer grass...at this very moment I find clay more interesting.

mightyjeditribble - May 31, 2007 02:26 PM (GMT)
Good to see that Hewitt managed to pull off a typically dogged win. I want him to meet Nadal, and hopefully really push him. Onion-man is certainly not pushing Rafa a lot at the moment.

mightyjeditribble - May 31, 2007 02:39 PM (GMT)
Onion man gets one break back in the third, and gets on the score board. He's still 1-3 down though, and it's hard to see him get back into this match.

Cipolla manages to hold, and is now only 2-3 behind. But it's really difficult to see him manage winning three games in a row at any point in this set. More likely, he will win one or two more games, at most.

mightyjeditribble - May 31, 2007 03:00 PM (GMT)
Is no one else following this? Cipolla is really going for his shots now, but there is very little hope for him. He is now 5-3 down, and needs to serve to stay in the set. It's not completely out of the question that Cipolla could hold here and break to level the match, as things are going at the moment. However, it is much more likely that Nadal either breaks here to take the match, or serves it out in the next game.

mightyjeditribble - May 31, 2007 03:03 PM (GMT)
OK, Cipolla holds. He's done well to keep almost in touch with Nadal. However, the Spaniard will now have a chance to serve out the set at 5-4.

chetanpv - May 31, 2007 03:11 PM (GMT)
MJT.
I think its pointless to post about Nadal. He's assured of the final.
The top half seems more competetive.

Wise_Analyst - May 31, 2007 03:22 PM (GMT)
Potential world-beater Gulbis (in the eyes of hysterical Henman fans only) is getting a mauling off the world renowned clay courter Montanes. He lost the first two sets 6-1, 6-2 but has gone a break up in the third.

Pesky Bjorkman hanging in there against Karlovic. 5-5 in the fourth, but Dr. Ivo's 2-1 up in sets.

Hernandez running away with it against 28th seed Kohlschreiber - no surprises there. He's a double break up in the third set.

And Verdasco took the first set against Tursunov. Break up in the second too.

chetanpv - May 31, 2007 03:31 PM (GMT)
Looking at Bjorkman, it won't be surprising if he makes the semis again at wimbledon this year.

Bjorkman vs Karlovic could be the semi-final at Wimbledon this year. I want Karlovic to win this match though, would like to see him play Nadal on clay. Bjorkman's a mini-break up in the tiebrea though - could he produce his second comeback from 2 sets down this tournament?

Hernandez destroyed Kohlschreiber 7-6, 6-1. 6-1, and Gulbis pulled a set back on Montanes.

Well yes, I think clay is probably more interesting at the moment in terms of there being more bona fide challenges to Nadal than there are to Fed on grass. I often wonder - if the grass season were longer, then woudl we have more challengers to Fed on it? It's often the surface that a player can afford to put little focus on, and in some cases ignore, and yet still have a good career on the other surfaces. If it were more important to win on grass, then surely more woudl focus on it? Just a thought .....

Wish I coudl see Bkorkman and karlovic. I want Karlo to win too. it's gone to five now just as I thought it might. Bjorkman is a well canny player especially when you consider his age. I liek him too.

:blah:

Gulbis seems to be on his way to levelling the match, having been two sets down.

I don't want to buy into the 'Gulbis is a world-beater' theory, but it would be impressive for such a young player, fresh on the tour, to be able to come back from two sets down. Of course this isn't assured yet, but he certainly seems to have some talent.

I don't think it's inconceivable that he could give Nadal a good match. Taking a set may be unlikely, but he's clearly not easily intimidated.

mightyjeditribble - May 31, 2007 04:07 PM (GMT)
Ivo v Jonas looks like it's a rather even match from the statistics. I would like to see Ivo v Nadal, as I think it could make for a more interesting match-up than Bjorkman v Nadal.

However, Jonas is up 4-1 (just one break though), even though Ivo had a number of chances to break back. And now he's 0-30 down on his own serve, so it looks like Jonas will go through here.

I really like Jonas, but I would've like to see Ivo go through here, to see what a match of his against Nadal on clay would look like.

As much as I like Bjorkman, I just can't see him troubling Rafa on clay.

Me niether. I'd have liked Ivo to progress as I'm quite a fan, it's abotu time he perfromed well in a slam, and yes it woudl have been great to see hwo he matched up against Nadal with THAT serve :D And it was probably the onyl chance of seeing him play on TV for me as the BBC always show Nadal but not Ivo and Bjorkman. I won;t do this time but you know what, come the USO I might just give it a go. Hopefully by then I will have settled and moved and hopefully have a new PC. Any live streams I've tried have bene appalling quality, which I put down to this old PC. Thanks for the advice :ok:

I feel mean but I'm not that impressed with what I've seen of Monfils. he seems to be flash one minute and crap the next. I might be wrong cos I'm a crap tennis analyst, but I think he lacks application and is not serious enough. Also I get the impression he loses interest, especially when not on the big stage.
