Title: Day 5 - Thursday 31st May
GS2 - May 31, 2007 10:22 AM (GMT)
First win of the day goes to Schnyder - 6-3, 6-2 over the younger of the Bondarenko sisters.
This is the nicest draw Patty has had in a slam for quite a while - will be interesting to see if she makes use of it.

I hope Patty has a good run here. She has had some good wins recently and deserves a solid grand slam performance to back it up.
Some other results:
(17) Katarina Srebotnik (SLO) d. Vera Dushevina (RUS) 64 62
(Q) Ioana Raluca Olaru (ROU) d. Tatiana Poutchek (BLR) 63 60
Shame Vera didn't beat Kata - I thought she could have won that one. Olaru has backed up her win over Vakulenko with a covincing win over Poutchek.
GS2 - May 31, 2007 11:46 AM (GMT)
Ivanovic cruising - takes the first set 6-1.
Ana looking in very good form so far.
GS2 - May 31, 2007 12:39 PM (GMT)
Sharapova after some early struggles looks to have this well under control now against Craybas
Leading 6-2, 4-0
Some first set of tennis from Safarova winning 6-0 dropping only 5 points (Nicole Pratt only won 2 of those on her own serve!)
Ivanovic wins 6-1, 6-4
T01 - May 31, 2007 12:46 PM (GMT)
Noticed that doubles star Paola Suarez has played with Anna Lena Gronefeld and lost in R1. I wonder why the star pair of PS and Viginia RP gone inspearate ways?
vivahate - May 31, 2007 01:15 PM (GMT)
they were never able to dominate like they had before suarez went on that extended injury layoff.
SerenaW19 - May 31, 2007 02:20 PM (GMT)
Well what a dire performance from Serena, I absolutely hated to watch it. For the first 9 games especially, she seemed to be just trying stroke the ball over the net, often moonballing, I really despise that kind of tennis. Then she still had problems stringing points together in the second half of the second set, but at least she started going for her shots at that point. Still along way to go yet Serena.
Quite an impressive 61 62 win for Sharapova, Ivanovic wrapped it up 64 in the second after some sterner resistance from Mirza.
GS2 - May 31, 2007 02:45 PM (GMT)
Hadn't noticed this before but Jankovic is actually playing the doubles!! Does she really think she needs more tennis!
SerenaW19 - May 31, 2007 02:46 PM (GMT)
Mauresmo saves a triple break point to lead 2-1 on serve :)

Jankovic  Looks like they could be in for a tough match against Ivanovic and Kirilenko, wonder how it will affect her for tomorrow if it goes to 3 sets.
Wise_Analyst - May 31, 2007 03:26 PM (GMT)
Jankovic and Li p*ssing all over Ana and Kirilenko in the doubles. Glad to see it too... now Ana can focus on the singles. I've got a feeling Venus will take Jankovic out tomorrow.
SerenaW19 - May 31, 2007 03:29 PM (GMT)
Oh for the first couple of games it looked like it was going to be a close match  but now Jankovic/Li are in distance of the finishing line.
liam_valid - May 31, 2007 03:41 PM (GMT)
Shaugnessy is beating Kuzzy 4-0 :o
make that 5-0 :yikes: this girl must have a grudge against russians

Yep, Kuzzy is just being pissed all over :o Then again i am not THAT shocked. I really like Kuzzy but boy does she have her moments.
liam_valid - May 31, 2007 03:48 PM (GMT)
Dechy is about to serve for the second set against Momo
liam_valid - May 31, 2007 03:58 PM (GMT)
Momo has pegged it back to 5 all second set and Kuzzy has got to 5-3 down from 5-0 down, saving a few set points so far
liam_valid - May 31, 2007 04:05 PM (GMT)
Kuzzy has woke up and her match is back on serve
SuperBRAT - May 31, 2007 04:12 PM (GMT)
Yeah good recovery form Kuzzy. The last thing she needs now is a rain break!
MoMo in trouble? :o

dl04 - May 31, 2007 05:00 PM (GMT)
Whats with the 'pissing all over' analogy roflmao
Serena looked very tentative i must say  Too much margin for error. In some ways it was a good thing as it limited her errors, but it gave Sequera an opening to start competing and actually attempt to match Serena from the baseline. Thankfully though Serena started to get better length as the match went on. Still Serena is looking a tad bit flat, she really needs to up gears here, but i'm sure it will come in the next rounds :)
Serving much better though, which is a great sign :D both sister's really setting the serving standard this tourny.......

I didn't see much of Serena's match. But she wasn't 'pissed all over' obviously! roflmao
So what do you reckon will happen in the Venus v Jankovic match? Scores? Tricky one cos Jankovic seems on a roll, but Venus seems fit and up for it as well.
dl04 - May 31, 2007 05:16 PM (GMT)
I'm looking forward to Venus vs Jankovic, always have great matches :D
Venus has looked impressive IMO, apart from that lapse yesterday. She's moving well and that serve is looking impressive. I feel Venus is serving so much better at this tourny than anywhere else this year. She's throwing down 120+ bombs consistently.
Jankovic has looked good also, moving well as always and is such a clean ball-striker. I still feel in a battle of movement, venus has the edge as she can do more damage on the run than Jankovic. Jankovic can be very defensive sometimes, against Castano she hit only 5 winners. She needs to be way more aggressive against Venus. 5 winners wont do it against Venus
I hope Venus plays well, she's overdue a great slam win since Wimby 05. She's looking healthy and feeling positive. I just hope venus can deliver. If she does- watch out Jankovic ;)

Now i havent watched Jankovic yet at RG. Is there any sign of the bug she caught last week?
mightyjeditribble - May 31, 2007 06:06 PM (GMT)
They've brought players back on to play. :yikes:
After Federer's comments last night, you would've thought they'd know better ...
It doesn't look so dark on the TV, but the commentators say the light isn't very good.
Looks like Kuzzy may break Shaugnessy here.

Nope. Shaughnessy now leading 6-5. Kuznetsova serving to stay in the set.
mightyjeditribble - May 31, 2007 06:24 PM (GMT)
Kuznetsova wins the first set on a tie-break. Quite a come-back. She might actually finish the match tonight ...
SerenaW19 - May 31, 2007 06:26 PM (GMT)
Yep Im impressed by Kuzzy coming back from 5-0, Shaugnessy is no push over either.

Shaughnessy goes a break down in the second. However, after the way the first set went, perhaps best not to make predictions.
Talking of predictions, at what time to you think the organizers are going to stop play? Getting pretty late now, with no lights on the courts.
SerenaW19 - May 31, 2007 06:51 PM (GMT)
I would assume before much longer MJT...Kuzzy winning in the second but it's not easy, looks like she's going to have to finish this match off tomorrow.

She's only one game away now. Shaughnessy's still fighting, though. Can she hold her serve here and make Kuznetsova serve it out? I imagine they will finish this game and the next one at least. But whether they will finish the set *should* Shaugnessy manage a come-back
Might be an academic question, as Kuzzie just got two match points.

mightyjeditribble - May 31, 2007 07:08 PM (GMT)
BBCi says "apologies for loss of commentary". We don't really mind, though, do we?
Another match point saved in an awesome rally. Kuzzie looks unhappy.
And she shanks another shot to give Shaugnessy the chance to make it 5-3.
Oh, commentary is back ...
mightyjeditribble - May 31, 2007 07:09 PM (GMT)
5-3 now. Kuzzy to serve for the set.
SerenaW19 - May 31, 2007 07:09 PM (GMT)
Terrific fightback from Meghan as she holds, Kuzzy to serve it out at 5-3
mightyjeditribble - May 31, 2007 07:13 PM (GMT)
Another match point for Kuznetsova. This time in her own service game.
She gets a really bad line call on a ball that's actually inside the baseline. Is it getting that dark?
The point is replayed, and won by Kuzzie. GSM.
SerenaW19 - May 31, 2007 07:16 PM (GMT)
 Well Kuzzy wins, surely they must be ready to finish the other matches now.....
petalp - May 31, 2007 07:22 PM (GMT)
Looks like the women's draw is shaping up well for the heavy hitters of the game..
Peer, Vaidisova, Williams x 2, Kuzzy, Sharpie, Ivanovic (sort of hits hard too)
TeamJustine - May 31, 2007 07:26 PM (GMT)
Great last match on the beeb tonight!! :D
And looks like they have a good line up for tomorrow.
