Title: Day 2 - Monday, 28 May
mightyjeditribble - May 28, 2007 09:20 AM (GMT)
The Venus match is about to start.
mightyjeditribble - May 28, 2007 09:21 AM (GMT)
Oh dear. The players warmed up, but now it's started to rain ... and the match isn't even going to start. :(
mightyjeditribble - May 28, 2007 09:25 AM (GMT)
The covers are on the court. Guess it'll be a while until play gets underway.
Forget about Wimbledon --- they should have a roof at RG!
Gav - May 28, 2007 09:29 AM (GMT)
What a tragic start to the day! Not even one ball hit in anger and they are off...... !!!!
dl04 - May 28, 2007 09:33 AM (GMT)
Venus looked so deflated :( It's just such a horrible scenario, especially at a Slam......
I hope it's intermittent showers rather than a 6 hour debacle like yesterday
yorkshire - May 28, 2007 10:01 AM (GMT)
On freeview they're showing the Murray Nadal Aussie match. One of the commentators said "we hope to show a good portion of it". Does that mean they're expecting showers for at least a couple of hours? :(

so many seeds playing today!
trisco - May 28, 2007 12:10 PM (GMT)
Eurosport are showing the Hingis Graf 99 final,
Cringeworthy stuff but you realise how young Hingis was and the pressure she was under within this match.
One thing I have noticed is that Hingis here seems to be hitting the ball just as hard but couter punching and placing the ball at acute angles and going for the lines a lot more than she has done recently..
Wise_Analyst - May 28, 2007 12:32 PM (GMT)
People do realise play's started again? Venus is 3-2 up on Cornet, they've exchanged a break of serve but it's back on serve now.
As usual, it'll be decided by Williams's errors, but Cornet looks useful and certainly capable of taking advantage of any sloppiness; a semi-finalist at junior tournaments apparently. She's also rather attractive... I do like French women

I turned that on after just getting up. The surface was green, I thought I was seeing thingsas I expected the FO :D
Wise_Analyst - May 28, 2007 01:45 PM (GMT)
Williams wins 6-4, 6-3, but I was really impressed with Cornet; let's hope she can go on to bigger things. Venus played quite well, although not at her best, and the key was her ability to keep returning the French girl's groundstrokes with equally deep strokes of her own - against anyone else, Cornet may well have had a much higher number of winners.
Stosur looks set to go through against Jamea Jackson, a set and a break up. Perry looks set to lose the first set to Sanchez of France, as does Li to Kloesel. Harkleroad got the first set against Wozniak, but the rain's come down again. :(
dl04 - May 28, 2007 01:50 PM (GMT)
Venus :D :yahoo:
That cornet girl, really solid, gave Venus something to think about briefly in the first set, even though i think Venus was trying to adapt to the heavy conditions. Venus was patch off the ground, but i felt she was moving superbly :D Even on clay, you can still see Venus's huge prowess around the court. Looks so awesome
Venus also looking great with her black RBK dress :D And her visor thingy  roflmao

I wonder if there's some colour variations? That would be great :D
Russiafan - May 28, 2007 01:59 PM (GMT)
Venus played a reasonably good match - obviously she was rusty at the start but now looks likely to glide through to face Jankovic in the 3rd round.
I was impressed by Alize Cornet - she has made the 2nd round the last 2 years so it's a shame that she couldn't repeat that feat this year. She had some chances like at 4-4 and 2-2 but didn't take them so didn't push Venus as much as she could have. She seems like she has the potential to be a top 30 player though as Sam Smith said she needs a big weapon if she is going to beat players like Venus in the future.

Funnily enough I was watching that match last night as I couldn't get to sleep.
It really is such a great match, and as you say Hingis played so much better then, she can construct the points so well on clay, it really is a delight to watch. I don't know what's up with her atm  Apart from injury of course :(
dl04 - May 28, 2007 06:44 PM (GMT)
Graf played well to win that match, but Hingis was playing far more the better tennis up until 5-4 when she served for the match. All point-construction went out the window and she allowed the German back in the match by just losing the plot completely
Graf though, dug so deep and her forehand just fizzed in the final set

Yeah Hingis was the better player, I've never seen her so upset after losing a match either, even after her beloved AO Finals and the 2002 loss in particular, she was more upset at the FO Final. She still wants it more than anything else. That I believe, I don't see her quitting until she's had a few more cracks at it.
