Fish suffers bizarre foot injury

World number 31 Mardy Fish is out of the French Open after injuring his foot while kicking an American football.

Fish sprained ligaments trying to kick a field goal while visiting the NFL Europa team Rhein Fire on Wednesday.

He had been part of the USA squad at the World Team Cup but has now returned to America for treatment.

Fish was replaced by doubles specialist Mike Bryan, but Sweden's Thomas Johansson won 6-3 6-3 as Sweden took the best-of-three series 2-1.

Bryan, playing his first singles match since 2003, had no answer against Johansson.

Robin Soderling then beat James Blake by the same scoreline in only 56 minutes before Bob and Mike Bryan beat Johansson and Soderling 6-2 6-1 in the doubles.

"It's really unfortunate for Mardy, but we also have to be human beings and live a life," said Blake.

"We all learn not to do silly things and to be more careful if we are going to do anything like that.

"But we can't live in a shell or a bubble and only play tennis and never go out and do anything. It's a tough balance.

"I don't know how severe it is. He's hoping that it is just something where he is off his feet for four, five days and then he can start hitting lightly. If that's the case he will be ready for the grass."

Argentina reached the final of the World Team Cup for the fifth time with a 3-0 win over Chile, but the USA and Sweden were both eliminated with two defeats in the round-robin stage.

With Belgium already eliminated from the Blue Group, three teams - Germany, the Czech Republic or Spain - can still advance to the final to face Argentina, depending on results in the final round of matches.
