Title: AMS Hamburg Information
Description: 14th - 20th May
Manzikert - May 12, 2007 01:27 PM (GMT)
It's here.
It's also disturbingly similar to the Rome draw in some ways.
i.e. Upper right corner has Robredo, Davydenko, Murray, Simon and Caņas all over again. (It's also Argentine-heavy, with Acasuso, Calleri and Chela all packed in there as well. No Nalbandian again, incidentally.) Federer gets Ljubicic again, as well as Ferrero and Ferrer in shades of MC. Blake in lower left again. This time, however, Djokovic (as No 4 seed) and Berdych are keeping him company. Also Rome finalists (though of course Nadal has yet to do his part!) will have an early potential rematch in the QFs. Gasquet in the mix in that quarter as well.
Projected R16, then:
===
Federer v Ferrero
Ferrer v Ljubicic
-
Djokovic v Youzhny
Berdych v Blake (Clement? Stepanek?)
--
Robredo / Almagro v Murray / Acasuso
Caņas / Chela / Calleri (Hewitt?) v Davydenko (Simon?)
-
Gonzalez v Gasquet
Baghdatis v Nadal
===
Potential Djokovic v Federer semi jumps out. Will clay help the former finally break his duck, or just make it tougher?

shouldn't we expect a nadal withdrawl from hamburg??
Federer-Williams - May 13, 2007 08:06 AM (GMT)
Nadal will want to play it as he is trying to support that event (subject to downgraded status). The final is best of 3 only so he will not be as tired as last year. Having said that he had a helluva semi and who knows what could happen in the final so not sure.

I fully expect that Rafa will not go there..This week in Rome was quite heavy (he did the double for a while also)..And the semi with Davy was just a big effort: His main objective remains and is to win RG so he will not go Hamburg...But as usual: Wait and see
Tenez - May 13, 2007 06:08 PM (GMT)
No I think Rafa will be there now. He hardly broke a sweat today.
Manzikert - May 13, 2007 06:38 PM (GMT)
Apparently Nadal has confirmed post-Rome final that he still fully intends to play Hamburg.
I'd like to think that he's not engaging in a bit of theatre for the sake of ticket sales, and would not say such a thing if there were any doubt at all. Certainly Gonzalez made things easier for the Spaniard by not taxing him very much today. With a bye into the second round, he won't have to play until Wednesday I'd assume, giving him some breathing room. His first match should also be straightforward, against either Becker or qualifier Hernandez; the big-serving, energetic German might conceivably give him a bit of a workout on any other surface but not clay, even on his home turf; and although Hernandez had a good week in Rome, taking out Hewitt and pushing Robredo to three sets, I don't expect him to pose any challenge here. Still I wouldn't be entirely surprised if the No 2 plays only a handful of matches to support the tourney and then grants a walkover, citing some minor physical complaint such as any of the ones that were mentioned this week. However you'd have to think he's tempted by the prospect of a brand new title and the 500 points that go with it--he's certainly sounded an ambitious note of late.
Elsewhere in the draw, a couple of noteworthy things had escaped my notice until now. There is the potential for a Safin v Federer match in the third round; it may appear intriguing but I think even the Russian's most optimistic fans can't seriously expect him to be able to test the No 1 anymore, the Volandri incident aside. Besides he'd have to get past Massu, who seems to have hit form in Rome, as well as either Wawrinka or Ferrero, both tough opponents, for the chance. Nevertheless the asterisk is there. Speaking of the Italian, he appears to have got a special exemption into the draw, complicating things rather for Murray, who will have to face him in the first round and has yet to notch a win on clay this year.
Lastly, Andreev (still benefitting from a protected rating for entry purposes) is sitting squarely in Nadal's section and could meet him in the third round. It could be a good opportunity for more revenge from the Spaniard after a week of dealing out much of it, since the Russian's oft-repeated claim to fame has been being the last to beat him on clay--it could also present a big headache for him and provoke that aforementioned walkover. B) But with Baghdatis and Kohlschreiber also in the mix there the tantalising match-up may not even happen.
Tenez - May 13, 2007 08:09 PM (GMT)
What's going on with Roddick? One clay tournament a year is enough?
I am sure that if it wasn't for the sponsors, he would skip the French and go straight to London.
I don't like this attitude and am glad he is not world number one. It would be very damaging for all those European tournaments (except Wimbledon of course).
In fact, who cares if he is missing Hamburg or MC!
Certainly not me but just making a point.

So any conformation of Rafa not playing Hamburg. Didn't see any news on that so it looks like he's playing.
BTW all of us seemed to have overlooked Fed's first match, probably against Hrbaty.
Care to look at their h2h ;)
vivahate - May 13, 2007 10:08 PM (GMT)
yes, probably unwise of roddick to play so few euro-clay tournies...clearly an indication of his priorities. and rest assured, you won't have to worry about roddick being world no. 1 again tenez roflmao
i didn't really like what roddick had to say about the proposed schedule changes either. he was all american tournies sell more tickets than some euro ones, therefore it made sense to nix master status from cette euro zone. i just don't appreciate his american money trumps everything else mentality.

that was a different time my friend. but if fed were to slip v. hrbaty, it would certainly be dreadful

Roddick is doing more or less what Pete did during the clay season. Play just one masters event and RG. He just wanted to save up for wimbledon.
Probably Roddick has wimby in his sights as he may fancy his chances this year more than any other due to his improved net game and a certain "you know who" is not his usual self lately.
Its sad for american players who can play on clay. After Jim Courier in the early ninties, there's nobody.

Former world No 1s Lleyton Hewitt, Juan Carlos Ferrero and Marat Safin moved smoothly into the second round of the Hamburg Masters on Monday but 2006's runner-up Radek Stepanek fell to Arnaud Clement.
Hewitt, playing at Hamburg for the first time since 2004 and seeded 16th, had a convincing 6-3, 6-4 victory over Agustin Calleri of Argentina in his opening match of the claycourt tournament.
Ferrero, the 15th seed, moved a step closer to a possible third-round clash with Roger Federer with a 6-1, 7-6 win over Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland in the first match up on centre court.
Ferrero will play Safin in the second round
Ferrero will play Safin in the second round after the Russian beat Nicolas Massu of Chile 7-6, 6-4.
Stepanek was broken four times by Clement, a former finalist at the Australian Open and he went down 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 in two hours 20 minutes.
The Frenchman will play number eight seed James Blake of the United States in the second round.
Stepanek lost to Spaniard Tommy Robredo in straight sets in last year's final. Robredo is the sixth seed this year and, like Federer, Rafael Nadal and the rest of the top eight seeds, he has a bye into the second round.
Hewitt was recently given a clean bill of health after a frustrating series of injuries and the Australian was delighted with his first-round performance.
"A 6-3, 6-4 win over a quality claycourt opponent was very good," the Australian told reporters. "It's good to be back here after I missed a couple of years with injuries.
"I haven't given myself a goal this week. I just want to get as many matches under my belt as possible going into Paris."
The only seed to fall on the first day was Marcos Baghdatis, who was beaten 7-5, 6-3 by Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber and even that was not much of a surprise.
Kohlschreiber, the improving 23-year-old, beat the Cypriot in straight sets in the semifinals in Munich earlier this month before going on to win his first ATP title.
Federer, the world No 1, will face Juan Monaco in the second round after the Argentine beat Dominik Hrbaty of Slovakia 6-2, 6-2 in the first round on Monday.
It will be Federer's first match since splitting from his part-time coach Tony Roche.
Nadal, who is on a 77-match winning streak on clay, will face the winner of Tuesday's first-round match between German hopeful Benjamin Becker and Oscar Hernandez of Spain.
