Title: Hingis doubtful for French Open

It looks like Hingis won't show up to defend her Rome title next week. She may not have another go at RG, either, which is especially disappointing seeing as that is largely the raîson d'être for her comeback.

It's surprising to see her form fizzle out so quickly. She hadn't been setting the world alight since returning, but she has reached three Slam QFs, picked up three titles and reached three finals (one of each just earlier this year), qualified for the YEC (winning a match and going to three sets in her other two) and for all appearances looked to remain a Top 10 fixture. The USO upset has really been the only main blemish I'd think (the Wimbledon exit was poor but it's her weakest Slam and was to a decent player).

I was fancying her chances to at least go deep into the second week in Paris, especially with her Slam nemesis Clijsters departed. She'd been on my sentimal favourites list for RG, also.

Which, for the curious, stands at something like:

Hingis
Mauresmo
Venus
Serena
Petrova
Kuznetsova

Hey, they're sentimental--I never said realistic. :P

the reason she lost was because she was injured. her painkillers ran out, i noticed a lot of the shots she could easily make, she missed because she didn't go for them, due to the pain. she said about retiring from the match, but she didn't think it would be fair to schnyder, so that's why she played on. that's why she'll miss the french open, so i don't know what your poll is for.

Trust me, I'm not trying to rubbish her prospects; on the contrary I like to see Hingis do well.

I perhaps didn't explain it well but injury at this moment will see her lose quite a lot of points (Tier I title, Slam QF) at a time when Top 10 spots are being fiercely contested. It would be a minor setback ordinarily but she has sounded discouraged lately (witness her remarks after her Miami loss to Radwanska) and I worry she might not have the heart for staging a mini-comeback even as her overall comeback seemed to be losing steam.

Hingis did seem eager to return, hence showing up in Berlin perhaps before she was ready to play, which is a good sign. I just hope she isn't taking the Myskina route.

I dont think she will retire again until she absolutely must. Having already been out of the game, she realises that next time she retires, it will be for good, and i think she loves the sport enough to stay around for as long as she can (unlike some), whether she is in the top ten or not, although i believe she will still be there next season.

i have a feeling Hingis may not return to tennis, and this injury may be the excuse she's looking for. I hope i'm wrong, but if it isn't this time i don't think she'll play after this year.

BIG-T i don't know why you think that. look mate, she played in berlin when she knew she was nowhere near fit enough to play, and it shows how eager she is to play. i don't see why she would come back and leave straight away due to a few bad performances. besides, the second year was always going to be harder than the first one, it's what you call 'second-season-syndrome'. the first year no one knew what to expect, so some people underestimated her, the second year is always tougher, because they know what to expect of you. next year will be the better one, i think she'll challenge more towards the slams from then on. and why would she quit when she hasn't reached her peak yet? :P
and manzikert, i know what you mean about she could fall down the rankings, but if she misses the fo, only really vaidisova can catch her before wimbledon, and she's got the semis to reach. besides, after the fo she's hardly got anything to defend, except for that calcutta thing, which is probably only worth about 10 points. :P

I hope you're right oblivion, her game is a great antidote to the modern power game.
I think she'll leave the game because she's stopped believing her ability to win a slam-yes she can win smaller tournaments now and again, but the latter stages of the slams now elude her.
As for not reaching her peak-i think that's well behind her now-unfortunately, she's in the mould (in terms of career) of Andrea Jeager, Hingis's star burnt brightly but dimmed quickly.
